Research Guide: Civil War Navies. by Terry Foenander. Introduction. This page has been produced to assist researchers in locating materials on both the Union and Confederate Naval forces. It is quite brief in nature and will include directions to as many resources as possible. Descriptions of each resource will also be included. Many Civil War research guides tend to concentrate on the Army and ignore Naval research facilities. This page is an effort to correct that deficiency. United States Navy. The vast amount of documentation available for the Union Navy makes research in this area relatively easy. Besides the major repositories, there are numerous minor resources which should not be neglected in one's quest for information. There are also numerous published resources which should be consulted. National Archives. To commence the search for details of the service of an ancestor in the Union Navy, an application should be made for the military and, if available, pension papers of the veteran from the National Archives, in Washington, D.C. Pension papers almost always include more details of the veteran, inclusive of birth and death information, so, if a pension was applied for by the veteran, it would be worthwhile to obtain copies of these, and exclude the military papers. A single set of copies of either the military or pension papers can be obtained from the Archives at U.S. $10. Applications should be made on NATF Form 80, copies of which can be obtained from the Archives. The basic information required when filling out these forms, for a correct identification of the veteran, are full name, branch of service, state from which served, war in which the veteran served and whether it was in the Union or Confederate service. If the veteran's name was a very common one, it would assist the Archives staff if the application included further details of his service, such as vessel or vessels served aboard, and other relevant particulars.

The young Confederacy succeeded against heavy odds in making something out of almost nothing. The South did not own one vessel capable of being fitted out as a ship of war. The first of a navy that was to contend against the third largest navy in the world, was christened after the first fort to fall into the hands of the Confederacy, the C.S.S. Sumter. more

The Monitor was strange in appearance. Confederate sailors described it as a cheese box on a raft. It had no sails, no visible guns, and no smokestack. But when the turret of the Monitor turned around and fired at the Virginia, every naval craft in the world became immediately obsolete.

http://www.civilwarhome.com/discipline.htm
Discipline in the Civil War Armies The Articles of War and civil laws covering military discipline were written and enacted before the Civil War to govern a small, self-contained professional military service. The military maintained order with a caste system and disciplined with shame and pain. With the mustering of great armies and navies, this way of life was revealed to vast numbers of civilian volunteers for the first time. Trouble resulted.
The Union and Confederate armies were led by small cadres of professionals who found that the war they were to fight required the coordinated movement of enormous bodies of men. The drill discipline this required was to be supplied by manuals such as Hardee' Tactics and the vigorous efforts of noncommissioned and junior officers. But many of these were friends or relatives of the men in the hometown companies in which they served. The local origin and makeup of most volunteer units had a poor effect on discipline; the men had elected their leaders, so volunteer officers were often wary of being strict with their troops. Early in the war this necessitated the removal or transfer of many volunteer officers, and in a few cases, the punishment of entire regiments.
Nor was the independent nature of volunteers and old loyalties easily overcome by discipline from Regular officers. Confederate Brig. Gen. Charles S. Winder had been an officer in the antebellum U.S. Army and was an officer in the Confederate army, leading 5 volunteer regiments. During the Second Bull Run Campaign he had 30 men from his brigade bucked and gagged at one time for straggling on the march. They took the corporal punishment badly: half of them deserted that night, the rest "swore Winder's next battle would be his last.,, They never had a chance to carry out their threat: Federals killed Winder during the next battle.

African American Civil War Sailors
More than a century after the end of the Civil War, comparatively little is known about the experience of ordinary sailors in the navies of the belligerents. Whereas few records of the Confederate States' Navy survive, those of the United States Navy exist in abundance. Ironically, this embarrassment of riches makes exploring the social history of African American enlisted personnel difficult. For unlike the army, the navy did not segregate African Americans into separate units administered by a Bureau of Colored Sailors. Accordingly, research concerning black sailors has lagged behind the rich outpouring on black soldiers. Even such basic information of how many African American sailors served during the Civil War remains unresolved. For years the Navy Department assumed that some 30,000 African Americans served during the Civil War, or roughly 25 percent of the approximately 118,000 Civil War enlistments. A close study of the Navy's official enlistment records undertaken during the early 1970s revised the estimate downward to just under 10,000 men, or approximately 9 percent of the total enlisted force. The researchers at Howard University, a team of graduate students led by Professor Joseph P. Reidy of the Department of History, in partnership with the National Park Service and the Department of the Navy, are attempting to close the gap between these widely divergent estimates and to examine the African American naval experience in all its dimensions.

Finnish Sailors and Soldiers in the American Civil War
Introduction
Previous studies
According to Ilmonen, the participation rate of the Finns was significant and greater than expected given the small Finnish population that lived in America at the time. Ilmonen estimates that some 1000 Finns lived in the United States during the 1860s, and of this number perhaps as many as one hundred Finns fought in the Northern Army and Navy (Ilmonen, 1919:158). The largest proportion of Finns at least in the North joined the Navy. Only a few individuals were found in the Army. From primary sources dealing with the Confederacy, it appears that more Finns were part of the Army and Cavalry in the south. ( Part of the reason for a lack of study on Finnish military involvement in the Civil War is the result of very poor records kept on the various enlisted personnel. Records are so poor in fact, that amongst the Confederate forces, no mention is made of the place of birth for the soldiers who were mustered into service in the Confederate South. Other scholars interested in this topic concur with this dilemma (Haggman, 1997; Olin, 1997). This has hindered the research in establishing ties to Finland, although a number of names are presented in this article which may undoubtedly have Finnish roots regardless of the spelling which may have been altered during the enlisting of each soldier.
