Charlie Maurer's Civil War Collection On Display
MEYERSDALE, PACharlie Maurer has quite a collection of Civil War relics, and he plans to share this collection with those who attend the 56th annual Pennsylvania Maple Festival in Meyersdale.
The 51-year-old Hooversville resident began collecting Civil War memorabilia back in 1983, after purchasing a bullet from the war at a New Market, Va., museum while on a trip with his wife, Ladonna. ³It grew from there,² he said about his historical hobby. Today Maurer estimates his collection contains anywhere from 150 to 200 pieces, including several rifles, two bayonets, a pistol, and over 100 bullets, many in their original casings. Also among the items he plans to display during both weekends of the festival are pieces of Confederate money, canteens used during the war, and approximately 20 buttons from soldiers¹ uniforms. Maurer has put his collection on display at several different events, including last year¹s Farmers¹ and Thresherman¹s Jubilee in New Centerville.

"Third" Parties in U.S. History

To the left . 1874, Kewanee, Illinois.
Jubilant farmers learn that their efforts have
triumphed over a combined Republican and
Democratic attempt to reelect judges
friendly to the railroad interests. The two-party system has presented itself as an unalterable fact of American civic life. The briefest look at the Evolution of the American Party System reveals this perception as mistaken. So-called "third" parties have been an integral feature of this process. As proportionately less qualified voters chose to participate in elections, those parties tended to expand their base. Less to the demands of governing and the placating of existing power structures, the third parties have had far more innovative political platforms , advocating popular issues long beore the major parties have even bothered to denounce them. Now, the scale of politics seems to require mass communications that places the premium on financial contributions rather than platforms or ideas. However, voter participation in the United States has fallen rather dramatically since mid-century and exit polling indicates a widespread "lesser evil" balloting and a persistent discontent with the alternatives. If American politics is to become representative, we should see changes in which electoral insurgency will again play a role. The following are links to information on major third party movements in American history.
