Militarism and madness in the pages of classic sci-fi
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne
French writer generally regarded as the 'other' father of sci-fi - the first being H G Wells. His SF classic depicts the misanthropic Captain Nemo busily upsetting shipping routes in his plushly-furnished submarine Nautilus. Survivors of an attacked vessel get a guided tour of the ocean depths. Technology on the verge of reality.

World War II has been raging for thirty years and 'the Lieutenant' is torn between blindly obeying orders or doing what he knows in his heart is right for his country. After some seriously gung-ho training, a space-marine is thrown into a war against some really nasty and violent alien bugs. Duty and country (i.e. America) are of paramount importance. Deadpanned by many critics for its right-wing content, a 1997 feature film sparked a revival of interest. Dr Peter Jung, late of the Austrian War Archives, completed his second volume for Osprey on the Austro-Hungarian forces in the First World War. Together, these two volumes, while thin, shed much light on the heretofore-neglected Austro-Hungarian troops who played such a large role in the First World War. There is a great deal of specialized information about the Austro-Hungarian army in both this volume and its predecessor, making them valuable commodities for anyone interested in a better understanding of the First World War. Given the constraints of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series, Dr. Jung made a commendable effort and these two volumes should be on the bookshelf of all serious students of the Great War.

    CHARLES I CROMWELL
    • King Charles I was a very unpopular King. He tried to rule England without Parliament. Parliament was a group of men voted for by the people. They helped the King pass laws and raise taxes. The King taxed people without Parliament’s permission to fund a war with the Scots. Most Englishmen didn’t want to get involved in this war. Eventually, in 1642, the King and Parliament declared war on each other. Everyone in the country was forced to choose sides. This is called the ‘English Civil War’. This was the first war with proper guns. There were many battles and many people were killed. Two battles were fought at Newbury and there was a big siege at Reading . Soldiers marched all over Berkshire on the roads to and from London. Parliament won the war. Oliver Cormwell took over and the King was taken as a prisoner to Caversham Park Faringdon King Charles was taken to Maidenhead to see his two youngest children for the last time. This was at the Greyhound Inn.

and her Civil War bid for the Throne
    • King Henry I often lived at Windsor Castle . It was here that he made the Barons of England swear that they would make his daughter, Matilda, Queen after he died. The country had never had a queen before. They were thought to be too weak. Matilda had been born at Sutton Courtenay, near Abingdon . She was called the Empress because her dead husband had been the German Emperor. She had a very bad temper and wasn't very popular. She pinched St. James' Hand from his shrine in Spain and gave it to Reading Abbey However, as he had always wanted, King Henry was taken back to England and buried in Reading Abbey in a silver coffin. The Barons went back on their promise. They made Henry's nephew, Stephen, the new King. Matilda started a civil war to try and take the throne by force. She was helped by her half-brother, the Earl of Gloucester. All the Barons in the country chose sides. Most of North Berkshire supported Matilda, especially her friends at Wallingford Castle . People quickly built other castles to try and protect themselves. Most of East Berkshire supported Stephen.

The Show Antiques Roadshow viewers tune in to watch people much like themselves - amateur collectors or history buffs - learn whether their treasure is a rare find or a reproduction. The men and women who volunteer their services as appraisers are extremely knowledgeable about specific periods of history. Their expertise comes from years working in some of the most notable auction houses in the country. They offer their services for free in exchange for national exposure on a highly-popular show. The show's appeal stems from the drama which unfolds each time an appraiser asks the collector, "Do you have any idea of the value of this item?" Some guests are surprised to hear that the odds and ends pulled from their attics are actually worth a great deal of money; others are disappointed to hear a low appraisal of a treasured family heirloom. Regardless of the appraisal, guests trust they have been given fair and honest values by the experts, which is a cornerstone of the popular show.

The rates in the following table are for shipment within the US only and everything goes "Book Rate". For all overseas shipments, if you pay with a credit card, the exact cost of the postage will be charged in a second posting to your credit card. If you want to pay by some other method, estimates can be obtained on the shipping costs. You must indicate if you want your books shipped by surface mail or airmail. If no indication is given, I will AUTOMATICALLY ship overseas orders by airmail, which takes about 6-7 days to western Europe and about 10 to Australia/New Zealand/Far East. Ordering 1 book for shipment in the US only (US Only) For third and each further book, add $1.00 (US only)
One note, the Glantz books are substantialy larger, and because of their larger size, have a different shipping structure listed on that page. For shipments to Canada and all other countries, postage can only be determined upon time of shipment. If you want to pay with other than a credit card, you're going to have to write and get an estimate before we ship.
To give an idea of airmail costs, to ship, via airmail, 1 softbound book to the UK costs around $11.00, two cost around $15.00, and 8 cost around $40. The costs are not linear.

My name is George Rogers Frakes. I have been researching the "Frakes" surname for over 10 years and this is my attempt to make it available to other researchers. I researched and published a book on the FRAKES men in the military 1750 to 1900. I have chosen five data bases to enter information that I hope will be helpful to other Frakes researchers. Every Frakes name has an assigned number which will apply throughout this data. That same number will reflect information about that person and will assist me in any inquiries about my information. This is a works in progress and will change as I receive new information, the unverified information comes from a variety of sources. I have documentation i.e. birth, death, marriage, land and military records to support some of the data but you must verify it's accuracy. It is my hope that other researchers will provide me feedback that will enhance the accuracy of this endeavor.
Census Records . These records are alphabetical by state, alphabetical by county within the state and chronological by year. The numbers to the right of each record is the census source record. All names are Frakes except where I have indicated otherwise. The names appear as I interpreted them, census records are often unreadable, missing information and misspelled. Where there is information that I deem important I have placed it in parenthesis ( ). I use the two letter abbreviation used by the U S Postal Service to identify state where born. If I don't have a number to a name assigned it means I don't have that person attached. Census records before 1850 listed only the head of family. I have other information such as census location, parents birth place etc.but chose not to include it here, if you have a need please contact me.
