History of 73rd U.S.C.T.
First Black Troop to be Mustered into the Union Army
by Camille Corte The famed 73rd U. S. C. T. was first organized in the Confederate service by Governor Moore of Louisiana as the 1st Louisiana Native Guards in May of 1861. After the surrender of New Orleans they offered themselves to the Union. General Butler accepted them and mustered the regiment into the service on September 27, 1862. The 73rd became the first Colored regiment to be mustered into the Union Army. It retained its designation as the 1st Louisiana Native Guards until after the siege of Port Hudson where it won great distinction in that desperate assault of May 27, 1863. In April 1864, the Regiment's name was transferred to the 73rd U.S.C.T. Upon assembling the troops for the completion of the Mobile Campaign in Pensacola, Hawkins' U.S.C.T. Division of three Brigades contained the 73rd. General Frederick Steele's provisional corps consisted of Hawkins' Division, Lucas' Cavalry Brigade, and General C. C. Andrews Second Division of the Thirteenth Corps. Steele's column set out on March 20th traveling due north towards Pollard and turning west towards Blakeley, arriving there on April 1. At daybreak on the second, Hawkins' Division charged forward driving the enemy into their works, becoming the first to invest Fort Blakeley. Andrews' Division arrived the night of April 2, positioned on the left of Hawkins far right flank. On April 3, General Steele applied to General Canby to retain Veatch's Division, formed on the left of Andrews and Garrard's Division of the Sixteenth Corps which positioned itself to the far left flank.

History of the Nigerian Army before 1966. The War - Planning Strategies. The Clash of Arms. Lessons Learnt. Conclusion. Bibliography. OUTLINE The Nigerian Civil War was fought to reintegrate and reunify the country. This paper will focus on the causes of the war, strategies employed by the belligerents in the conflict, and the lessons learnt. I NTRODUCTION The Federation of Nigeria, as it is known today, has never really been one homogeneous country, for it's widely differing peoples and tribes. This obvious fact notwithstanding, the former colonial master decided to keep the country one in order to effectively control her vital resources for their economic interests. Thus, for administrative convenience the Northern and Southern Nigeria were amalgamated in 1914. Thereafter the only thing this people had in common was the name of their country since each side had different administrative set - up.This alone was an insufficient basis for true unity. Under normal circumstances the amagalmation ought to have brought the various peoples together and provided a firm basis for the arduous task of establishing closer cultural, social, religious, and linguistic ties vital for true unity among the people.

http://www.civilwarguns.com/9201b.html
I'd like to start off this month's column with a brief mea culpa . When covering dealers in parts and supplies for Civil War shooters in my December column, I inadvertantly left out William V. Osborne (Lodgewood Mfg., Dept. CWN, 151 Oak Street, Berlin, Wisconsin 54923.) Bill Osborne maintains one of the largest inventories of parts for original and reproduction Civil War guns in the country. If you need an original or quality reproduction part for a Maynard, Smith or Burnside carbine or Springfield, Fayetteville or Richmond musket, a sear spring for your reenactment gun, a high front sight for your "shooter," or need parts to create your own custom piece, check out Bill's advertisement in the ±Civil War News ± or send an SASE for his catalog. If you need something esoteric, drop him a line. If he doesn't have it, he'll put you on his waiting list. On a recent visit to Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland, I noted a small group of bullets on display at park headquarters. The selection was diverse, and included both .58 and .69 minie balls, conical .36 and .44 caliber revolver slugs, several "picket" or "sugar loaf" bullets asociated with mid- nineteenth century hunting or target rifles and a couple of buckshot. One projectile appeared to be from a British made Whitworth sniper rifle, a weapon most often associated with Confederate sharpshooters. According to site superintendent Susan K. Moore, the bullets were uncovered near the visitor center during preparations to open the park. The center is located in an area known as Gambrill's Mills at the time of the July 9, 1864 battle of Monocacy.

There were dozens of McGoughs in both the Union and Confederate States armies in the American Civil War. See the Civil War Research Database at Ancestry.com . I mention but a few of them here. The Debt of Honour Register of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 37 McGoughs, 4 McGeoughs, and a Peter Page McGeoghie from Dundee, Scotland, who were members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First or Second World Wars. The Ebensburg War Memorial of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, lists ten McGoughs who served the United States in either the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, or the Civil War. In 1821, John McGough was high sheriff of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, where the borough of Ebensburg is located. Many contemporary McGoughs are named in Notable McGoughs on the Net on this web site.
