...and they [Yankees] are marked ... with such a perversity of character, as to constitute, from that circumstance, the natural division of our parties Thomas Jefferson Some say simplistically that the Civil War was fought over slavery. Unfortunately, there is no "simple" reason. The causes of the war were a complex series of events, including slavery, that began long before the first shot was fired. Competing nationalisms, political turmoil, the definition of freedom, the preservation of the Union, the fate of slavery and the structure of our society and economy could all be listed as significant contributing factors in America's bloodiest conflict. Complaints of Georgians Many of the problems Georgians saw more than one hundred fifty years ago are being reiterated today. The "oppressive" federal government. High taxes(tariffs before the war). A growing government unwilling to listen to law abiding citizens. Sound familiar? They were complaints levied from 1816 on in Georgia. Constitutional Questions People argued about the meaning of the Constitution since its infancy. From a legal standpoint, the document defines the relationship between the people of the United States and the federal government, detailing the powers and responsibilities of each. Important Notice - New Law Concerning Eligibility for Headstones and Markers
The history of government headstones has an identity of its own apart from development of the National Cemetery Administration. The original standard grave marker precedes the establishment of national cemeteries in 1862 and actually has its origin in the frontier days of this country prior to the Civil War. In the normal course of events, soldiers died and garrison commanders were compelled to bury their dead, mainly in cemetery plots within post reservations. Those not so fortunate were buried where death occurred. In the course of time, a fairly uniform method of marking burials came into being. A wooden board with a rounded top and bearing a registration number or inscription became the standard. No centralized system for recording burials existed. Although the system may have been adequate for frontier forces, it could scarcely meet the needs of the national army that came into being at the beginning of the Civil War. Two months after the first battle of Manassas, the War Department issued General Orders number 75, Sept. 11, 1861, which made commanders of national forces responsible for burials and marking graves. In the same General Orders, the Quartermaster General of the Army was directed to provide headboards as well as blank books and forms for the preservation of burial records. War Department General Orders number 75 created the first organized system of marking graves.

The Civil War . . .A time that tore our nation apart, when brother fought against brother This site is an attempt to tell the story of the Men and Women from New Hampshire who served in the Civil War. While history books, period newspapers, printed biographies and the Official Records have provided an outline of the events of the war, the real "story" is found in the letters and diaries of those who served and those whose lives were most affected.
To help us achieve our goal, we would like to encourage you to contribute information — about your ancestor and his/her service to the country, genealogy or links to your personal pages. We are especially interested in copies of rosters, photos, diaries, letters or papers which refer to New Hampshire men and women who served in the Civil War.

The Civil War was fought in 10,000 places, from Valverde, New Mexico, and Tullahoma, Tennessee, to St. Albans, Vermont, and Fernandina on the Florida coast. More than 3 million Americans fought in it, and over 600,000 men, 2 percent of the population, died in it.
American homes became headquarters, American churches and schoolhouses sheltered the dying, and huge foraging armies swept across American farms and burned American towns. Americans slaughtered one another wholesale, right here in America in their own cornfields and peach orchards, along familiar roads and by waters with old American names.
In two days at Shiloh, on the banks of the Tennessee River, more American men fell than in all the previous American wars combined. At Cold Harbor, some 7,000 Americans fell in twenty minutes. Men who had never strayed twenty miles from their own front doors now found themselves soldiers in great armies, fighting epic battles hundreds of miles from home. They knew they were making history, and it was the greatest adventure of their lives.

    California in the Civil War
Welcome to the California in the Civil War Homepage! Most people forget that California was a part of the Union during the Civil War. This page is meant to help broaden people's awareness of the role that California played in preserving the union. It is a work in progress, and useful information and suggestions are welcome. The State of California is credited with providing 15,725 volunteers to the Union Armies during the Civil War. The units provided break down as follows: two full regiments and one battalion of cavalry, eight full regiments of infantry, and one battalion of infantry called mountaineers. These men all served in the west and southwest. The First Regiment, Washington Territory Infantry Volunteers had eight companies that were recruited in California.
    • California gold helped finance the Union effort. California soldiers helped keep the land between CA and the rest of the Union from anarchy. California soldiers helped keep the Confederates in Texas from spreading farther west. California soldiers helped secure the Pacific Coast and keep the confederacy from gaining strength there.

Wilmington,Delaware HSD Home Museums Current Exhibitions W e all acknowledge that Delaware is a small state, but there are key moments in America's past when "little Delaware" has stood at the forefront of the unfolding historical drama. The latest exhibit at the Delaware History Museum, Delaware in the Civil War , tells the story of one such period. The Civil War tore Delaware apart just as the United States of America as a whole was torn asunder. Delawareans anxiously watched the storm clouds of war grow ever darker throughout the fateful election year of 1860. G eographically and philosophically, the second smallest state found itself caught up in the hostile debate that pitted north against south, abolitionist against slaveholder, and nationalist against states-rights advocate. S lavery remained legal in Delaware and some Delawareans wanted to keep it that way. Others thought that it was an outdated institution that would die if left alone. A minority of Delawareans thought slavery was morally wrong and should be immediately abolished. M ost Delawareans agreed that war should be avoided at all cost. The majority hoped and prayed that a compromise could be reached that would satisfy both north and south. But if, such a compromise could not be reached, many perhaps the majority of Delawareans favored letting the Southern states secede and form a new country rather than fight a civil war to uphold the Union. The few Delawareans who were ardent abolitionists supported a war to end slavery. Fewer still thought that the Confederate cause was so just as to be willing to fight for it.
