The Confederacy raised between 764 and 1009 regiments over the period of the Civil War. The lack of adequate records precludes a more accurate count. Regardless of the actual number of regiments recruited, the list below is but a small fraction of those that were raised. It is hoped that many other Civil War regiments will find a "webmaster" in the future to preserve their history.

127. To Remember Spain / After Fifty Years: The Spanish Civil War
A history of the Spanish libertarian and anarchist movement with a look back at the Spanish civil war.
http://www.spunk.org/library/writers/bookchin/sp001642/fifty.html
After Fifty Years:
The Spanish Civil War
Between myth and reality there lies a precarious zone of transition that occasionally captures the truth of each. Spain, caught in a world-historic revolution fifty years ago, was exactly such an occasion a rare moment when the most generous, almost mythic dreams of freedom seemed suddenly to become real for millions of Spanish workers, peasants, and intellectuals. For this brief period of time, this shimmering moment, as it were, the world stood breathlessly still, while the red banners of revolutionary socialism and the red-and-black banners of revolutionary anarchosyndicalism floated over most of Spain's major cities and thousands of her villages. Taken together with the massive, spontaneous collectivization of factories, fields, even hotels and restaurants, the oppressed classes of Spain reclaimed history with a force and passion of an unprecedented scope and gave a stunning reality in many areas of the peninsula to the ageless dream of a free society. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 was, at its inception, the last of the classical European workers' and peasants' revolutions not, let me make it clear, a short-lived "uprising," a cadre-controlled "guerrilla war," or a simple civil conflict between regions for national supremacy. And like so many life-forms that appear for the last time, before fading away forever, it was the most far-reaching and challenging of all such popular movements of the great revolutionary era that encompasses Cromwellian England of the late 1640s and the working-class uprisings of Vienna and Asturias of the early 1930s.

The small town of Morrisville , is located in the Research Triangle, outside Raleigh in central North Carolina. On April 13, 1865 it was the sight of the last major cavalry clash of Confederate and Union forces in the state. Federal troopers under Gen. Judson Kilpatrick numbered around 4,500 they faced around 4,000 rebel horsemen under Gen. Wade Hampton and Gen. Joseph Wheeler. On April 14, the fight resumed outside of Morrisville and continued on to Chapel Hill.

The Civil War for Kids The students in Mrs. Huber's class at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, New York have been learning about the Civil War. We read about this important time in our nation's history and wrote about it. We made a t imeline of important events from 1860 to 1865. Our bar graphs contain data about the North and the South in 1861 when the Civil War began. Each graph compares the resources of the two regions. We looked at Civil War battle victories , used our mapping skills to examine the nation in detail, and made both Confederate and Union flags . We have drawings of Civil War uniforms , short biographies of Civil War leaders , images of other leaders links to other Civil War Sites, and activity sheets for you to do. Essex Men at the
Battle of Worcester
by David Appleby
Photo from "The English Civil War
Recreated in Colour Photographs"

Anyone who has visited Worcester Commandery recently will have seen the animated life-size display depicting the death of the Duke of Hamilton. The common soldier in the diorama, tending the wounded Hamilton, represents an Essex man. The troops who took Fort Royal were not New Model regulars, but part-time soldiers from the Essex Trained Bands. Surprisingly - not least because such provincial militias have habitually been portrayed by Civil War historians as models of cowardly incompetence - the Trained Bands engaged at Worcester fought particularly well.
"The Gallows Here and Hell Hereafter"
To a certain extent, seventeenth-century provincial militia deserved their slovenly reputation. The Trained Bands were part-time soldiers normally used within their native county to curb civil disorder and to guard against foreign invasion. In practice, weapons and drill were often neglected, and attendance at musters falsified by corrupt or incompetent officials. Essex's Trained Bands were by no means free of such problems, although they appear to have been better than most, and were reasonably well-clothed and armed.

Missouri in the Civil War
Confederate Military History, Vol. 9
BY COL. JOHN C. MOORE. The preparation of a military history of Missouri was intrusted to Col. John C. Moore, of Kansas City, and his finished work may be confidently submitted to the verdict of the reader. Colonel Moore was well known as an accomplished writer, and for this work he was specially fitted by his Confederate service as a staff officer with Generals Marmaduke and Magruder, and as colonel commanding a regiment with Gen. Jo Shelby. The years that he gave to historical studies bearing on the general Confederate subject, and his complete sympathy with Southern ideas and ideals, further equipped him for this faithful presentation of Missouri's part in the great conflict.
This portion of the Home of the Civil War website presents the first seven chapters of his work. These chapters are completely unedited and appear just as in the original book. The only change made was the title of the volume. The title of the volume is "Missouri." It was changed to "Missouri In The Civil War" to accommodate the internet search engines. 139. Border States In The Civil War
Border States In The civil war. The Lincoln administration regarded Delaware,Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri as border states, critical
http://www.civilwarhome.com/borderstates.htm
Border States In The Civil War The Lincoln administration regarded Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri as border states, critical because of their geographical positions and questionable in loyalty because of their strong ties to both South and North. Slavery existed in all 4 states, though its importance had diminished in Delaware and Maryland as their prewar economies became increasingly interwoven with the North's.
Delaware rejected an invitation to join the Confederacy early in 1861, and through the war remained loyal to the North, mobilizing its industries to provide supplies for the Union Army; despite some Southern sentiments, it never seriously threatened to leave the Union.
Marylanders were much more divided in their sympathies, being distinctly Southern in character and attached to the South by strong blood ties. They resented radical secessionists and abolitionists alike as the cause of hostilities, urging recognition of the Confederacy. The first blood was spilled during the Baltimore Riots in March 1861, and though the state contributed substantially to the war effort with men and materiel, the Federal government garrisoned troops in the state as a precautionary measure.
Believing Kentucky to be a buffer zone, Governor Beriah Magoffin refused the call for troops and formally declared the states neutrality. But the attempt proved futile: both Union and Confederate recruiters operated in the state, with Kentuckians serving on both sides. When Confederate troops moved into western Kentucky Sept. 1861, and Brig. Gen. U.S. Grant occupied Paducah, the legislature officially endorsed the Union. Pro-South Magoffin established a provisional government at Russellville, ratified the Confederate Constitution, and Kentucky was admitted to the Confederacy in December. The state, like Missouri, suffered the tragedy of a war that pitted father against son, brother against brother.

Civil War (1860-1865)
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863
Conflict over issues of how much control the federal government should have over the states, industrialization, trade, and especially slavery had increased tension between Northern and Southern states. After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded (or withdrew) from the Union and set up an independent governmentthe Confederate States of America. These events led to the outbreak of the Civil Wara brutal, bloody, four-year conflict that left the South defeated and ended slavery at the cost of more than half a million lives.
