An Inventory and Geographical Index of Upstate New York State Tombstone Carvers Compiled by Daniel H. Cortland County Tombstone Carvers
This list gives the data that I have found on tombstones in central New York cemeteries. Notes from archival and documentary sources are now to be found on a separate page. All of this work is derived from the research I have done in an attempt to identify the several Cortland County carvers The data on this page is derived almost exclusively from the stones themselves. Many thousands of stones have been examined, with a focus on locally made shale stones, but very few will have any signature to show the maker. While most stones are not signed, their design elements can give us clues that help identify the works of particular artisans. Although I am fairly certain that I can identify the artisans of many of these unsigned stones, I have not made that foolish attempt as of yet! Someday I hope to more fully study the composition of the design, and method of carving or lettering form, which are as unique as any artist's personal style, and learn who these modest artisans were. I have not had the chance to add my notes on scores more stones, and several other carvers, such as the Terpennings of Virgil, Cortland County and later Dryden, Tompkins Co.; the Crandalls of Norwich, Chenango County; David Manrose of Freetown, Cortland Co.; or Hooper of Greene, Chenango Co.. My own home town of Cazenovia had a string of carvers between the as early as 1810 and extending strongly into the 1930s but I have had little time to research them. Dozens of early carvers never signed their stones and thus remain anonymous - this is another project altogether!

This database was compiled by Bruce Towers of Prospect, Connecticut from "The Maine Adjutant General's Report of December, 1863".
It is comprised of all the Canadians he could find by manually sifting through its 1000 pages. Hopefully, this listing will help some Maritime researcher discover why their relative "dissappeared" in the years 1861 - 1865. We have converted the database to HTML as it is not long, and will present it here with Bruce's permission. Thank you Bruce! The page is wide, and you will have to scroll the page to see the right hand columns. Women Were There
The War Between the States was also a war between brothers, cousins, friends and neighbors - and some of them were women. We know from certain military records, antique books, and lately some newer books, that women served as nurses, vivandieres, sutlers, and as Union and Confederate soldiers, and even spies. A vivandiere, by the way, is a French army term applied to women who provided food, provisions, and liqueurs to soldiers. For more about them please visit History of Vivandieres. Sutlers were peddlers who sold goods to military units in the field. One woman served without pay as a physician, acted as a spy, and was a prisoner of war.
Dr. Mary Walker
Many stories have been written about unique Civil War women, including Sarah Emma Edmonds, alias Franklin Thompson. In Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, 1865, which is subtitled The Adventures and Experiences of a Woman in Hospitals, Camps, and Battle-Fields, the author chronicles her adventures and escapades as she gathers information and nurses the wounded. Some say that this book is a mix of fantasy and fiction. The original is in my personal collection and it is a delightful book to read. Historians have verified that Emma Edmonds, as Franklin Thompson, did serve in the units she mentioned at the times she said.

Another fairly well known story is that
of Jennie Hodgers who served and fought
for three years as Albert Cashier.

THE CHILDERS AND CHILDRESS CIVIL WAR RESEARCH CENTER I heard my brothers call... distant, from the grave...
it called like the long roll...
summoning us to a place and time we had nearly forgotten...
We will not turn away...
Was it really so long ago?
I will be as faithful in death as he was in life and I will remember...
not because someone told me that I should,
but because I could be no other way and he would do this for me.
Ever faithful and evergreen...
Only those who die young... may remain that way forever.
They live only because I refuse to let them die. One hundred and fourty some years ago, our Childers/Childress forefathers heard the the call to defend their homeland. Hundreds of our family answered the  call, as they have in every war since the founding of our nation. Yet, this was a different war. A war not against a foreign invader, or to defend the freedoms of  another nation. This was a war of brother against brother, north fighting south. It has many names, the war of the rebellion, the war for southern independence the war against northern aggression, or the most common the Civil War.

Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum Soldiers and Sailors Monument
Recognized as one of the world's outstanding monuments, the structure has come to symbolize both the City of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. The Limestone used for the monument is gray oolitic limestone from the Romona quarries of Owen County. It stands 284 feet, 6 inches high, only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty. It cost $598,318 in 1902. It has been estimated that building a similar structure today would cost more than five hundred million dollars.
The commission for the monument construction requested architects to submit design proposals. Of the seventy proposals turned in, two finalists were chosen. Then from the two, Bruno Schmitz of Berlin, Prussia (Germany) received the appointment.
There are a number of art works either built into the Monument, or placed throughout the grounds. Bruno Schmitz brought with him Rudolf Schwarz. Schwarz was sculptor for the statuary groups "War" and "Peace", "The Dying Soldier", "The Homefront" and the four statues at the corners of the Monument that represents the Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Navy.

[Copied by Justin Sanders from the Official Records, Ser IV, vol 1, pp. 81-85.] But when these reasons ceased they were no less clamorous for Government protection, but their clamors were less heeded the country had put the principle of protection upon trial and condemned it. After having enjoyed protection to the extent of from 15 to 200 per cent. upon their entire business for above thirty years, the act of 1846 was passed. It avoided sudden change, but the principle was settled, and free trade, low duties, and economy in public expenditures was the verdict of the American people. The South and the Northwestern States sustained this policy. There was but small hope of its reversal; upon the direct issue, none at all. The Presidential election of 1852 resulted in the total overthrow of the advocates of restriction and their party friends. Immediately after this result the anti-slavery portion of the defeated party resolved to unite all the elements in the North opposed to slavery an to stake their future political fortunes upon their hostility to slavery everywhere. This is the party two whom the people of the North have committed the Government. They raised their standard in 1856 and were barely defeated. They entered the Presidential contest again in 1860 and succeeded. The prohibition of slavery in the Territories, hostility to it everywhere, the equality of the black and white races, disregard of all constitutional guarantees in its favor, were boldly proclaimed by its leaders and applauded by its followers.
