CIVIL WAR PAGE
And welcome to Augusta, Maine: June 1865! On your right, lined up along State Street, is the 19th Maine Infantry, home at last from three years in the Army of the Potomac. On the balconies and porticoes of the famed hotel "The Augusta House" are various dignitaries including the Governor, the Adjutant General, the Mayor and their wives and guests. We don't know who the guy on the roof is. In the center is a little band of musicians who played for every regiment that left for the war out of Augusta; and for every regiment that returned here. Off in the distance you can see the dome of the original Capitol Building of the State of Maine. You can get right into this picture by clicking here Photo courtesy of Earl Shettleworth, Maine Historic Preservation Commission The 20th Maine Battle Flag Found! While us folks here at the Maine State Archives stand second to none in our admiration for Joshua L. Chamberlain, we would like to introduce you to some other brave men from Maine and amaze you with the heroic exploits and gallant deeds performed by other Mainers! Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields
Technical Volume II: Battle Summaries
Prepared for the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, United States Senate; Committee on Natural Resources, United States House of Representatives; and the Secretary of the Interior 1993 (updated 1997) Foreword The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission was established by public lawon November 28, 1990, because of national concern over the increasing loss of Civil War sites. The 15-member Commission, appointed by Congress and by the Secretary of the Interior, was asked to identify the nation’s historically significant Civil War sites; determine their relative importance; determine their condition; assess threats to their integrity; and recommend alternatives for preserving and interpreting them. The Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields presents the Commission’s findings.
Acknowledgements The battle summaries were researched and written by Dale E. Floyd and David W. Lowe, staff members of the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission and historians with the National Park Service. Edwin C. Bearss, Commission member and retired Chief Historian of the National Park Service, served as technical advisor. Editing and publication oversight was provided by Rebecca Shrimpton, Historic Preservation Planner, and Tanya M. Gossett, Historic Preservation Planner, both with the American Battlefield Protection Program (through a cooperative agreement with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers).

29. The War For State's Rights
factual history of the war for states rights commonly known as the civil war.the truth about the battles, generals Lee and Grant and Abraham Lincoln.
http://civilwar.bluegrass.net/
First of all, I feel the need to point out that there never was a civil war in the USA. By definition, a civil war is where 2 or more factions are fighting for control of the same government. The War For States' Rights was not about control of the US government, but about our desire to govern ourselves as an independent nation. That desire still remains strong with us. That having been said, I have put down as much information about the War For State's Rights as I have on hand, and will continually add to it as I get more. Information about Battles and Campaigns, Distinguished Military Units, Statesmen, Soldier's Lives during "the conflict", Officers, Weapons, Prison Camps, Blockade Runners, Spies, Slavery Issues, and many other categories. I am a Confederate all the way to the bone and would love nothing better than to list only triumphs by our Glorious Nation, but this would not be fair to history. All of my information can be easily verified by anyone who disputes any of it. Those who have actually studied history (or at least paid attention in history class, assuming they had a good teacher like I did - thank you Mr. Simms) know that the War For State's Rights was not about slavery (as the occupational government would like you to believe), but about where (at its most basic level) governing laws, and regulations should come from. This site will, undoubtedly, go through many updates and revisions as time goes on, though I will ONLY post truthful and accurate information. I am not a racist, skinhead, hate-monger, or any of the other labels usually associated with those who dispute the distorted Yankee version of this period in the history of our two countries usually are.

CIVIL WAR RECORDS IN THE FLORIDA STATE ARCHIVES Florida Confederate Pension Files Online
The Florida State Archives has digitized its collection of Confederate pension records with over 13,000 pensions available online.
Florida played an active, if less than prominent, role in the American Civil War. Once derisively called the "Smallest Tadpole in the Dirty Pool of Secession," Florida had joined the Union only fifteen years before its January, 1861 secession, and the state's population was the smallest by far of any in the Confederacy. Florida nonetheless provided an estimated 15,000 troops for Confederate service, as well as several thousand black and white Union volunteers. The state's coastline harbored blockade runners and Florida beef, pork, sugar, molasses, and salt helped feed the armies of the South. A number of military engagements occurred in the state, most importantly the February 20, 1864 battle of Olustee, which ended in a decisive Confederate victory. At the close of the war, Tallahassee was the last state capital east of the Mississippi River to remain in Confederate hands.
The Florida State Archives maintains a number of collections documenting Florida's role in the War Between the States, as well as some material from other states. Listed in this pamphlet are the most significant of these collections.

January 1861 The South Secedes.
When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas and the threat of secession by four more Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.
February 1861 The South Creates a Government.
At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the United States Constitution, but with greater stress on the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.

34. The Civil War In Louisiana
Ballads, poems, novels, historical accounts and screenplays have described, explainedand at times glamorized the war Between the States, or the civil war.
http://www.crt.state.la.us/crt/tourism/civilwar/civilwar.htm
Between April 17,1862 and May 18, 1864 20 major Civil War battles and engagements were fought in on Louisiana soil. Lives were upturned and destroyed. Tragedy and bravery gave way to bittersweet success and failure grand beyond imaginings. The Prize: Control of the mighty Mississippi River. The Cost: Immeasurable.
Ballads, poems, novels, historical accounts and screen-plays have described, explained and at times glamorized the "War Between the States," or the Civil War. They can only partially succeed in helping us to understand the Cruel War. On both sides, young and old alike, confident of a rapid victory, enthusiastically joined the cause, fighting bravely for what they believed. From generals and privates to those left behind, no one anticipated the long years of fighting suffering and mourning which lay ahead. Contents

In any future great national trial, compared with the men of this, we shall have as weak and as strong, as silly and as wise, as bad and as good. 35. Causes Of The Civil War - The Relation Of Slavery, State's Rights, Sectionalism,
A brief look at slavery, States Rights, and sectionalissues that led to the American civil war.
http://www.swcivilwar.com/cw_causes.html
The Civil War was caused by a myriad of conflicting pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences and pride, and set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. At the root of all of the problems was the institution of slavery, which had been introduced into North America in early colonial times. The American Revolution had been fought to validate the idea that all men were created equal, yet slavery was legal in all of the thirteen colonies throughout the revolutionary period. Although it was largely gone from the northern states by 1787, it was still enshrined in the new Constitution of the United States, not only at the behest of the Southern ones, but also with the approval of many of the Northern delegates who saw that there was still much money to be made in the slave trade by the Yankee shipping industry. Eventually its existence came to color every aspect of American life. At the Constitutional Convention there were arguments over slavery. Representatives of the Northern states claimed that if the Southern slaves were mere property, then they should not be counted toward voting representation in Congress. Southerners, placed in the difficult position of trying to argue, at least in this case, that the slaves were human beings, eventually came to accept the three-fifths compromise, by which five slaves counted as three free men toward that representation. By the end of the convention the institution of slavery itself, though never specifically mentioned, was well protected within the body of the Constitution.

This database of Illinois Civil War Veterans indexes the first eight volumes of the nine volume publication, Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois . (The ninth volume lists veterans of Black Hawk, Mexican, and Spanish-American Wars.) This 1900-1901 publication, originating from the rosters maintained during the Civil War by the Illinois Adjutant General, is the result of an 1899 Illinois statute mandating that a corrected version of these records and subsequent publications be printed. The names of approximately 250,000 men, organized into 175 regiments, are found in its pages. The work includes a roster and history for each regiment.
