Labor and Civil Rights: Two Movements, One Goal? The Values of Labor History Historical Inquiry Activities The activities in this site will help guide students interested in examining the relationship between the labor movement and the civil rights movement, primarily in the 1940s-1960s. For students interested in a broader examination of organized labor, consult the George Meany Memorial Archives' Web site . The archives has developed pathfinders, which include primary and secondary sources held by the archives, on child labor, women, organizing, and labor law. The archives has also developed a series of teacher's guides with instructional activities that target the use of various primary sources. The Values of Labor History Labor history is American history and is crucial to students' understanding of working class culture and heritage. Moreover, labor history is interactive "hands on" and interdisciplinary:
  • Labor history requires students to examine how factors like class, race, ethnicity, and gender have shaped the experiences of working people and their contributions to America's economic, political, and social development.
  • Labor history enables students to trace the evolution of industrial and workplace relations throughout America's history, and analyze the roles played by both organized labor and business in shaping the employment relationship.

Call number: video 4545
Abstract: This program examines the rise of Stokely Carmichael and his Lowndes County Freedom Party, which he formed to get blacks registered to vote. These efforts are examined against the backdrop of murder and intimidation which accompanied the struggle for civil rights. None of the Party's candidates were ultimately elected, but the groundwork had been laid for the poor and disenfranchised in the South to gain political power.

Sociology subjects: Community activism Resisting the state Reviews and Numerical Ratings This is a good, well-edited film with plenty of first person narratives and personal accounts from those involved in the Lowndes County elections. The video gives the early origins of the Black Panthers but remains silent on their rise to national prominence. It would be a good video for social movement history, but would need to be supplemented by discussion of the Black Panthers wider initiatives. It flags poverty and denial of rights as issues which could be dealt with in class discussion as there is little analysis offered in the video. Mervyn Horgan

A Reader on Race, Civil Rights, and American Law
A Multiracial Approach
Timothy Davis Kevin Johnson and George Martinez
This anthology offers a range of legal and related literature analyzing the major issues of race and civil rights in the modern United States. Unlike previous works, which have tended to focus on the relationship between Caucasians and African Americans, this anthology considers race and civil rights issues from a wide range of minority perspectives — African American, Asian American, Latino, and Native American. The debate over race issues is examined in numerous contexts, including the role of race in laws affecting education, housing, employment, voting rights, immigration, and the administration of criminal justice. In this anthology, editors Davis, Johnson, and Martinez explore broader themes such as the history of racial subordination of African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos; affirmative action; hate speech; and the subordination of women of color. In setting the stage for an examination of race in these diverse contexts, the anthology’s first selections explore the concept of race. The anthology is geared toward, but not limited to, law school classes focusing on civil rights and race relations. The selections are of such a nature that the anthology should also appeal to anyone interested in foundational readings in this area. Each chapter begins with an introduction that strives to provide a framework from which the reader can analyze the current debates over issues of race in the United States.
