Euro-MPs swayed by pollution research
Evidence produced by researchers at Newcastle University has helped to convince the European Parliament to strengthen draft legislation which would force mining companies to clean up their act, safeguarding the environment and human life. Euro-MPs supported the idea of introducing tough new rules on the control waste from mining and quarrying, which would bring the rest of Europe into line with Britain, which has had the highest standards in the world since the 1966 Aberfan disaster. The Directive on the Management of Waste from the Extractive Industries was supported by the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Parliament strengthened the original proposals by making more than 100 changes, which are now subject to scrutiny by the council of ministers. If the legislation is approved in its current form, mining companies will bear much more responsibility for ensuring that existing and abandoned workings are safe to humans and the environment.

Civil engineering
Civil engineering is a field of engineering that deals with the construction and maintenance of the structures that are required for human civilization, such as buildings, roads, water supply and sewers. In general, civil engineering has developed from observations of the ways natural and manmade systems react and from the development of empirical equations that provide bases for design. It is an umbrella field comprised of many related specialities. Structural engineering , of which structural design is a component, is typically the largest part of civil engineering as a practice. Structural engineers design bridges, buildings, offshore oil platforms, dams etc. Structural analysis is another component of structural engineering and a key component in the structural design process. This involves computing the stresses and forces at work within a structure. There are some structural engineers who work in non-typical areas, designing aircraft, spacecraft and even biomedical devices. Supporting structural engineering is the field of geotechnical engineering . The importance of geotechnical engineering can hardly be overstated: buildings must be connected to the ground. Geotechnical engineering is concerned with soil properties, foundations, footings and soil dynamics.

Huntington Fund for the Heritage of
Civil Engineering
It is the mission of the Fund to:
  • Advance the collection, preservation, and access of civil engineering rare books, photographs, drawings, manuscripts, and other significant research material at the Huntington. Encourage research use of the Huntington’s collections in order to further scholarship in the history of civil engineering and its social impact. Increase awareness and understanding of the history and heritage of civil engineering among scholars, civil engineers, and the general public.
The Fund will act as an endowment, the income of which will allow the Library to support fellowships for scholars studying the history and impact of civil engineering, to hold various lectures and conferences as well as develop exhibits that promote an understanding of the role and impact of civil engineering, and to preserve and catalog historical civil engineering collections obtained by the Library. An Advisory Board of civil engineers and historians of engineering has been established and the activities of the Fund for Civil Engineering will be managed by Dan Lewis, the Huntington’s Curator for the History of Science and Technology.
Civil Engineering Research Materials at the Huntington Library
The Huntington, long known as a great research center for history and literature, is also a superb location for the study of the history of civil engineering, particularly in the American and British contexts. Civil engineering is a relatively modern concept, developed around 1750 to describe engineering projects (such as the building of roads) usually undertaken by military engineers, but neither exclusively military in purpose nor executed by soldiers. The people involved in these projects came to be known as civil engineers. The 1828 charter of the London Institute of Civil Engineers describes civil engineering as:
