Squire and Anna lived in Utica, N.Y., where, as a well-known civil engineer, inventor, and theoretician, he developed the first scientifically based rules for bridge construction. After graduating from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1830, he did survey work for several railroads and canal projects and made surveying instruments. In 1840 he invented a lock to weight canal boats. The invention of the steam engine required bridges which could support heavy live loads and this motivated Squire to turn his attention to bridges. At the start of the 18th century, iron as a structural material was unknown, but as the century evolved, cast iron came into general use and wrought iron was in commercial use by century end. He invented two new truss designs and in 1853 completed a 146-foot span iron railroad bridge near West Troy (now Watervliet), N.Y. Wooden trusses had been built according to "rule-of-thumb" methods without scientific or mathematical means to obtain accurate quantitative information on stresses. Rule-of-thumb wouldn't work with iron. It had to be analyzed scientifically and in 1847, Squire published a collection of essays entitled

Welcome to the Department of
CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
Our mission is to provide students with a broad, fundamental and flexible educational program and to expand engineering knowledge through an active and exciting undergraduate and graduate research program. The department is dedicated to providing life-long development, instilling a sense of professional responsibility, and serving our society. We provide an environment that promotes teamwork and values integrity and honesty in all efforts. Civil and environmental engineering is an inherently interdisciplinary field. As such, students select groups of courses in one or more related application areas, such as computer science, applied mathematics, urban and regional planning, economics, chemistry and management. The civil and environmental engineering curriculum leads to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. To receive an accredited B.S. degree in civil engineering and environmental engineering, undergraduates enroll in courses in the three main thrust areas: structural analysis, design and reliability; transportation systems engineering and optimization; and, water resources and environmental engineering. Graduate students also pursue research in one of the three thrust areas to receive a M.S. or Ph.D. in civil engineering. Students who are interested in a general engineering degree with an emphasis in environmental engineering should visit the

Other branches of engineering have emerged through the ages with the specialization of technical knowledge. At the present, Civil Engineering retains a strong relationship with other branches of engineering and actively involves the generation of new technologies. Civil Engineering deals primarily with constructed facilities, including structures and their foundations, transportation and environmental systems, waterways, ports, irrigation, drainage, water supply and treatment. Teamwork and communication are as important to this civil engineer as are math and science. While a solid foundation in math and science is required for civil engineers, getting along with co-workers and being able to speak and write well are very important too. But that's one thing about the engineering field some positions allow a lot of interaction with people, and yet other positions are suited to personalities who prefer a more isolated work environment. Every time we drive on an interstate highway we see the products of a civil engineer. Barb has worked on projects that involve the lengthening of on/off ramps, extending overpasses to meet federal guidelines that accommodate today's taller trucks, resurfacing existing highways, building large culverts and changing highway signs. Barb says some aspects of the engineering field require long hours and the ability to meet deadlines and remain within budgets which can be stressful. Those are some of the negatives encountered by civil engineers, but there are plenty of positives. Civil engineers enjoy lots of flexibility. They might work outside or inside or a combination of both. They can be creative when designing projects, but they also spend time writing reports. Some days are spent at a desk with a computer; others are spent at a construction site. Barb says civil engineering is a great career for females, but they are underrepresented in the field. In her college classes males outnumbered females, and that is reflected in the job market.
