Some of these plans might be appropriate for use in US History or other Social Studies classes. These plans follow a standard lesson plan outline, but a teacher may want to choose from one or more sections of the lessons themselves.
One lesson plan may contain a number of activities, and one plan may be implemented over a number of days, almost as though it were a "unit plan." When possible, quizzes and answer may be posted for your use as well. It is my sincere hope that you might be able to use some of these ideas. TITLE: Maps as pictures of the Earth
GRADE LEVEL:
LENGTH:
30 minutes
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION: The student will identify a map as a picture of the Earth and locate land and water on globe and map.
MATERIALS: Globe, map, child's picture, children's atlas PROCEDURE: 1. Introduction: Show the class the globe and review with them that the globe is a model of the earth. Have the students use the globe to explain that the Earth is a sphere and that it has land and water on it. 2. Development: 3. Closure: Have the class discuss what they saw outside and why they think the land is different colors on the map. Also provide them with a copy of a blank map and let them color in their map according to how they think the colors are. ASSESSMENT: Have the students take turns tossing a bean bag or dropping an object such as a cub onto the map. Next, have the student identify the place where the object landed as land or water. As a teacher you will take notes and observe to see if the children can correctly identify places of land or water on the map.

COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Problem-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Chapter 11: Influencing Government
"Influence of Mass Media on Government" Introduction
In this chapter students read about the many different people, organizations, and institutions that affect our government. Mass media affect people by what they choose to cover and how they choose to cover it. Mass media also affect government officials. Those running for office want the media to cover their campaigns and portray them in a positive light. Our nation's highest elected official, the president, has a press secretary to brief reporters on the president's plans and to respond to the media's questions. In this activity, students will take a closer look at the role of a White House press secretary. Lesson Description
In this lesson students will read an interview with White House press secretary Ari Fleischer. They will answer several questions about the job of press secretary and prepare a briefing on a current event. Instructional Objectives
  • The learner will be able to identify the skills necessary to become a press secretary.
  • The learner will be able to describe the job of the press secretary.
