Paul Rodriguez called from a movie set in Malibu, "which is not a good place to shoot; everybody's in the business and they all feel violated." He's playing one of four people in the film, as yet untitled, who are living lies. "I'm a guy who pretends to be Asian," he said. "Instead of being a Hispanic gardener, he's an Asian landscaper. It's nine bucks an hour more. But he's ignorant. He pretends to be Japanese but he names himself Wong. It's kind of like those old Pepe le Pew cartoons where he paints over the white stripe so the girl won't know he's a skunk, but then they swim through the water and find they're both skunks." Rodriguez, who arrives in Reno on Saturday to headline a Cinco de Mayo presentation of the "Yo Quiero Comedy Jam" at the City Center Pavilion, is no stranger to movie sets. He's played numerous supporting roles and has worked with some of the top directors in the business.

Johnny Cairos Restaurant
Cinco de Mayo New Listings Johnny Cairo's restaurant in Playa del Carmen...
So, where is a GOOD restaurant?
A welcome addition to the very hip northern section of “Quinta Avenida” (5th Ave.) in Playa del Carmen is JOHNNY CARIO’S new restaurant. We caught up with the owners John Gray and George Cairo for a chat about their history and an up-date on their new location. George and John joined forces in 1989, having first crossed paths at the Ritz- Carlton’s Laguna Niguel property. At the ripe old age of 18 John had already traveled extensively and worked with some of the finest chefs in the world. George had been in the restaurant business for years and wanted to open a place of his own. After they both absorbed everything the Ritz could teach them George encouraged John to team up with him and move to the Yucatan to open the first Johnny Cairo’s. Since Cancun was already saturated with restaurants they decided to open their new venue in the small fishing village of Puerto Morelos, @15 minutes south of Cancun. It was a recipe for success and soon became the toast of the town. Travelers were blown away by the fantastic flavors of special dishes created by John, and the impeccable service and personal touch provided by George and the staff.

American Marketing effects how we teach about other culturesRE: "homework" topics any ideas?
From: Kimberly Herbert ( kimberly@wcc.net
Date: Sun Jun 17 2001 - 19:29:30 PDT During May, I heard a piece on NPR about Cinco de Mayo. Apparently it is a
very minor holiday in Mexico especially compared to their independence day
in September (think Flag Day compared to July 4th). Certain companies have
really marketed Cinco de Mayo because it creates a "long weekend" holiday
half way between (roughly) Easter and Memorial Day. Interesting perspective.

Happy Cinco de Mayo
In honor of this lovely holiday, I will be dining on Mexican food and drinking mojitos (decidedly non-Mexican, but hey, they're yummy). Speaking of mojitos (nectar of the gods), the AP is reporting that Richland, NJ will be renaming itself Mojito for a few weeks this month. Yes, it is an advertising ploy: "Bacardi offered to give the township $5,000 for recreation projects such as new playground equipment in public parks." Better than being named Coke for a month, tho.

In case you haven't noticed, Latin culture is hot, so hot, in fact, that what might have appealed to only Hispanic audiences a few years a go is now mainstream. From pop icons (J-LO, Christina Aguilera) to condiments (salsa), south of the border is main street. Perhaps nowhere is this influence more evident than in the explosive growth of Mexican restaurants in the past 10 years. Corner taquerias have boomed. Chains Americanized and popularized tacos, and burritos, exposing mainstream America to Mexican food and drink. The Margarita is arguably now the world's best-selling cocktail, Corona is the seventh biggest beer brand in the US, the leading import by a mile, and six of the top 16 imported beers come from Mexico. Once Americans get a taste of something, we always seem to want more. The trend now is toward giving consumers a more authentic experience. Mexican restaurants now are featuring more dishes that reflect the regional cuisines of Mexico, or even regional fare here. Instead of just traditional Tex-Mex fare, menus now offer unusual preparations using high end ingredients.

On May 5 , 1925, high school science teacher John Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution in one of Tennessee's public schools. Scopes had agreed to act as defendant in a case intended to test Tennessee's new law prohibiting the teaching of evolution in its public schools. On May 4, the day before Scopes's arrest, the Chatanooga Times had run an ad in which the American Civil Liberties Union offered to pay the legal fees of a Tennessee teacher who was willing to act as a defendant in a test case. Several Dayton residents hatched a plot at a local drugstore. They hoped that a trial of this type would bring much needed publicity to the tiny town of Dayton. San Antonio's Cinco de Mayo celebration attracts 30,000 visitors. The festival in St. Paul, Minn., draws 100,000. It seems an unlikely place for the high turnout. But up north, Cinco de Mayo is the only fiesta in town. In fact, it's a draw for the entire Upper Midwest. Both Dakotas, Wisconsin and other nearby states send visitors to join in the party, said Doug Copeland, the District del Sol program manager in St. Paul. "This is the main one," he said. "We also commemorate Day of the Dead and Mexico's Independence Day, but those are much smaller, community-based events and less of a festival."

Boy Scouts live longer?
I saw an article in the paper today that said Boy Scouts are less likely to engage in dangerous habits. Apparently, the "dangerous habits" include things like drinking, drugs, smoking and gay sex. Interestingly, missing from this list of dangerous habits are activities such as rappelling, mountain climbing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and camping all dangerous in their own right. Sounds like bias to me. Posted by podge at 08:51 AM TrackBack

April 24, 2002
We have met people who teach us more about life, community, ourselves and God in our midst than we could ever hope to learn.
With the help of Honduras Mission Group volunteers and other green thumbs, Susan and her committed cohort, Steve Coster, pot and repot the hundreds of flowers, vegetables and herbs that Susan has donated and seeded and which she cares for on a daily basis in her extensive home greenhouse. These wonderful plants are then made available to you, to serve as a reminder of our life and work in the world. Fiesta Ranchera
Music will highlight Falfurrias celebration By Brendan Walsh
Caller-Times
Around area parks, in local taverns and at countless backyard barbecues, South Texans will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend.
The Fiesta Ranchera celebration in Falfurrias is held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo, though it won't be the only focus of the event. There will be carnival rides, pinata-bashing games, a Saturday parade, a horseshoe tournament, bingo and a sock hop. Those now participating in any of those activities will no doubt want to check out the plethora of food booths offering standard South Texas carnival fare.
Part of the celebration of Latino culture will be conjunto music Friday and Saturday night, ballet folklorico on Friday, and the traditional rancheras music of Amanda Hoffsetter on Friday and Saturday.
Cinco de Mayo's roots
Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory against the French in the town of Puebla on May 5, 1862. At that time, France was in the process of invading Mexico because of a dispute over debts owed by the Mexican government. General Ignacio Zaragoza, who was born near what is now the town of Goliad, assembled an army of campesinos, or field workers, to stave off the invasion. Though the French captured Mexico City the next summer and Mexico lost the war, the victory at Puebla is still considered a point of pride.
