General Seeks 'Satan' Speech Probe
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2003
General Explains Himself

Army Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin has made several speeches - some in uniform - at churches in which he said the U.S. was fighting a war with Satan. (Photo: CBS)
"He does not see this battle as a battle between religions, he sees this as a battle between good and evil, the evil being the acts of individuals."
Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
(CBS/AP) A top Pentagon general has requested an investigation of his church speeches casting the war on terrorism in religious terms, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday.
Several Islamic and religious freedom groups and foreign officials criticized Army Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin last week when reports surfaced of his comments during several speeches at evangelical Christian churches. Boykin said the enemy in the war on terrorism was Satan, that God had put President George W. Bush in the White House and called one Muslim Somali warlord an idol-worshipper. As CBS News Nationsal Security Correspondent David Martin reported last week, Boykin had raised eyebrows with remarks he had made to church groups.

T The Atheist's Bible
Pious Americans were shocked by Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason , part of which was written during the great pamphleteer's imprisonment in Paris during the French Revolution. Although denounced as the "atheist's bible," Paine's work was actually an exposition of a radical kind of deism and made an attempt at critical biblical scholarship that anticipated modern efforts. Paine created a scandal by his sardonic and irreverent tone. Assertions that the virgin birth was "blasphemously obscene" and other similarly provocative observations convinced many readers that the treatise was the entering wedge in the United States of French revolutionary "infidelity."

Even before the publication of the Age of Reason , Thomas Paine was hated and feared for his political and religious radicalism by conservatives in England, where he had periodically lived since 1787. Paine fled to France in December 1792 to avoid trial for treason. In this cartoon, Paine sleeps on a straw pillow wrapped in an American flag, inscribed "Vive L' America." In his pocket is a copy of

Such as the concept of doing unto others as you would have done to you, and a sense of being connected to a cosmic energy source or consciousness greater than ourselves. These commonalities among separate religions indicate and signify a profound revelation: that the spiritual foundation of all of these religions is the same. And what is religion but a philosophy of spirituality that recognizes and professes a connection of the self to the big picture? A belief known as Foundationism seeks to integrate and reconcile any differences to focus on and discover the shared points of every organized and traditional religion.

... important links work of the team
The team on interreligious relations promotes contact between Christians and neighbours of other faiths primarily through multi-lateral and bi-lateral dialogue with partners of other faiths that is aimed at building trust, meeting common challenges and addressing conflictive and divisive issues. An increasingly important aspect of the team's work is to interpret major trends in the religious, intellectual and political life of various faith communities and to consider the future of religion and interreligious relations. In partnership with other WCC programme teams, the team on interreligious relations seeks to encourage reflection on religious plurality and its significance for Christian identity and witness. The team also explores issues related to indigenous beliefs, traditional spiritualities and new religious movements. The primary methodology of the WCC's work on interreligious relations remains dialogue. During the past years, the WCC has organised a number of Hindu-Christian, Christian-Muslim, Buddhist-Christian, and Jewish-Christian dialogues at the international and regional levels.
