Church and State, Religion and Politics
Kenneth Cauthen
The essay that formerly was on this page was published as a part of a chapter of my The Ethics of Belief: A Bio-Historical Approach, 2 vols. (Lima, OH: CSS Publishing Co., 2001). A brief summary follows.
The question of religion and politics is not the same as the question of church and state. Failure to make this distinction results in confusion. The problem of church and state has to do with institutions and the spheres of action that are appropriate for each. Here the concept of separation is valid. Thorny problems arise in two particular areas. 1. The first involves trying to steer between avoiding an establishment of religion and permitting its free exercise. Prayer in public schools and is among the most contentious. 2. A second range of problems arises when religious belief and practice conflict with secular law. The problem of religion and politics defines another set of issues. Church and state deals with the relationship of institutions that are independent of each other. Religion and politics has to do with two spheres of activities in the life of the same persons. Citizens who belong to religious groups are also members of the secular society, and this dual association generates complications. Religious beliefs have moral and social implications, and it is appropriate for people of faith to express these through their activities as citizens in the political order. The fact that ethical convictions are rooted in religious faith does not disqualify them from the political realm. However, they do not have secular validity merely because they are thought by their exponents to be religiously authorized. They must be argued for in appropriate social and political terms in harmony with national values.

Background of Religion and Church in America
  • Traditionally a "religious" country through immigration history, though with separation of church and state
  • Seeming contradictions: "In God We Trust" on money, "...one nation, under God ..." in Pledge, official chaplains, public 'religiosity'
  • Religious issues often in the news: court cases about public prayer, public aid to parochial schools, question of public aid to religion-based charities
  • Influence of 'religion' on U.S. foreign policy (especially the George W. Bush administration)
  • Questions often arise: 'What is a "church"?' 'Can the "state" interfere'? (see Freedom of Religion: Separating Church and State

What face will General Synod show the world?
LEANNE LARMONDIN As the meeting of General Synod inches closer, plans are afoot to cope with the anticipated media interest. If the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in the United States (ECUSA) is any indication, a denominational gathering that is planning to talk about homosexuality is a guaranteed attraction for many secular media. In fact, there were more than 350 accredited media at the 2003 convention in Minneapolis, Minn.
But the fact remains that many denominations across North America are wrestling with questions about sexuality. It is a hot topic.
Here in Canada, the Anglican and Evangelical Lutheran churches are examining the role of gays and lesbians in the life of the church, while the United Church of Canada dealt with the issue several years ago. In the U.S., besides ECUSA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the United Methodist Church are struggling with the reality of non-celibate homosexuals in the ranks of their clergy.
Naturally, most delegates and General Synod planners would prefer that the media paid more attention to other matters in the life of the church: the soup kitchens, the Out of the Cold programs, the services to refugees and immigrants, the Alpha programs and the youth ministries.

World Council of Churches general secretary challenges Bush’s religious claims
Speaking March 20 at an ecumenical service of prayer for peace held at World Council of Churches (WCC) headquarters in Geneva, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser denounced as "misuse of religious language" US president George W. Bush’s attempts to invoke divine legitimation for his war against Iraq.
Noting an increasing tendency on the part of the US president "to invoke religious, even divine legitimation for his intention to disarm Iraq by force", Raiser suggested that a Christian response today to “the political, ethical and spiritual challenge of war […] declared with the alleged purpose of restoring peace and justice” must be “an act of defiance: denouncing this misuse of religious language in order to justify an act of war that violates the legal order developed to protect world peace”.
In his reflection, Raiser quoted the German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who, in 1934 as war loomed, made the passionate plea: “Today God’s commandment for us is the order of international peace. To say this is to express a quite definite recognition of the will of God for our time. […] As certainly as we leave the making of the last peace to God, so certainly should we also make peace to overcome war.”

Researchers referring to this list may be reminded that divisions into separate religious bodies do not always indicate theological distinctions, but may be primarily geographical and administrative in purpose. Conversely, individuals and congregations within a single religious body exhibit varying degrees of variation with regards to belief, practice, etc. Although religious bodies are not always the primary vehicle of doctrinal distinctiveness, they are usually the primary focus of other resources of a religious group, such as finances, legal status, property, educational facilities, leadership, and membership.
This list includes all truly international religious bodies with at least 1 million adherents. All known regional and national independent religious bodies (those which are organized in only one or two countries, such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland or Church of South India) are also included if they have at least 1 million adherents. Possibly a few independent national bodies have been omitted if we are not aware of them.

    Overview of religion in Russia:
For seventy years, the official state "religion" in Russia was Atheism. " Many aspects of church life, charitable work, theological study, political and social comment simply disappeared completely and now have to be built up from scratch. " Many religious groups in Russia lost the confidence of their membership during the communist era. According to Keston News Service, " Almost all senior leaders of all officially recognized religious faiths - including the Catholics, Baptists, Adventists, Muslims, and Buddhists - were recruited as KGB agents. It was virtually impossible to advance in church hierarchies without affiliation with the government." The Irish Times reported that Patriarch Alexy II, current leader of the

    Purpose of This Site
In discussions of the role of religion in the United States, in both government and law, questions often come up about the religious views of the founding fathers, presidents, and others. What did they think about about such things as the separation of church and state, public prayer, and the relation between religion and morality? These are not easy questions, since their views are often complex and nuanced, and sometimes changed over the course of very full lives. Partisans of various points of view on church-state issue have all too often quoted selectively and out of context. There are lists of the religious affiliations of these men, both in books and on the web. All the lists I have seen contain at least minor inaccuracies, and sometimes major ones, and even when technically correct, they can be misleading.
