Religion in Norway
Norway has an official Protestant State Church based on the Evangelical-Lutheran religion. Although there is no separation of Church and State, all inhabitants have the right to exercise their religion freely in accordance with a 1964 amendment to the Constitution. Nine out of ten ethnic Norwegians are members of the State Church of Norway. Norwegian religious expression is largely private; whereas most individuals state that religion is important to them, this is not generally expressed through active religious participation in organized communities. While roughly 88% of the population belong to the Church of Norway, only 10% attend church services or other Christianity-related meetings more than once a month. Some 5.9% of the population are members of other religious communities, while 6.2% do not belong to any religious community at all. The largest religious and life-stance communities outside the Church of Norway are the Humanist Movement, represented by the Norwegian Humanist Association (63 000), Islam (60 000), the Pentecostal Movement (45 000), the Roman Catholic Church (40 000 or more), the Evangelical-Lutheran free church (20 000), Methodists (13 000) and several lesser free churches. The conversion of Norway to Christianity started in around 1000 and was a result of contact with Christian Europe through a combination of trade ties and Viking raids. Missionary activities conducted by the Anglo-Saxon church as well as from Germany and Denmark also helped Christianity to gain prominence over the gods of traditional Norse mythology and S¡mi nature worship.

The Church of Norway
The Church of Norway is a Protestant state church, headed by the King of Norway, with the Storting as the supreme legislative body. The Royal Family is obligated to practise the Evangelical-Lutheran religion. In practical terms, it is the King in Council that is responsible for the overall government control of the Church. The Ministry of Cultural and Church Affairs has been given the administrative responsibility while the Storting (Norwegian national assembly) is in charge of adopting church-related legislation and budgets. All bishops and deans are appointed by the Government. The top ecclesiastical body is the General Synod.
Norway was Roman Catholic until the Reformation, when Protestantism was adopted by Royal Decree in 1537 and the Church of Norway established. During the 1700s the Church of Norway came under the influence of Pietism, an individually-oriented Lutheran revivalist movement from Germany emphasizing the connection between belief and action. The Pietists made an active effort to incorporate Christian faith and ethics into the life of each individual, for example by introducing the confirmation ceremony (1736) and Folk School (1739). During this period, Norwegian Pietists demonstrated a great interest in missionary activity, particularly as regards Greenland and the S¡mi regions of North Norway. Lutheran orthodoxy reigned supreme from the early 1600s, and for a long time, no religion other than the Church of Norway was permitted. A religious revival swept through Norway in the 1800s, as lay preachers – unordained evangelists with no clerical training – began to preach the Bible without the approval of official religious circles. A ban on lay preaching was lifted in 1842. The Pietists gained an even stronger foothold through the evangelical revival of the 1800s, and spoke out in protest against what they perceived to be the half-hearted religiosity of ordained clergymen. Thus, unlike the churches of Denmark and Sweden, the Church of Norway during this period came to be strongly associated with Pietism and a powerful lay movement.

Related Category: Religion, General heresy, in religion, especially in Christianity, beliefs or views held by a member of a church that contradict its orthodoxy, or core doctrines. It is distinguished from apostasy, which is a complete abandonment of faith that makes the apostate a deserter, or former member. Heresy is also distinguished from schism, which is a splitting of or from the church brought about by disputes over hierarchy or discipline, rather than over matters of doctrine. The heretic considers himself or herself not only a church member but, in a doctrinal controversy, the true believer; indeed, some persons originally labeled heretical were rehabilitated after once abhorred views become accepted. The battle for doctrinal control of Christianity began with the declarations of St. Paul in the New Testament. In the religion's first three centuries, numerous sects, many arising from
