Gothic Church Architecture
Gothic church architecture in Medieval England developed from Norman architecture . 'Gothic architecture' is the term used to describe building styles between 1200 to 1500. Such a large time span meant that a number of styles developed within Gothic architecture and it is common to divide these styles into three sections. The building between 1200 to 1300 is usually referred to as Early English; between 1300 to 1400, the style of building is referred to as Decorated and from 1400 to 1500, it is known as Perpendicular. It is common for major church buildings to show examples from all three of these periods. Gothic cathedrals are characterised by large towers and spires. Whereas Norman architecture can be seen as being 'dumpy' due to their more limited knowledge of building, the Gothic era coincided with a greater knowledge of engineering and this is reflected in the church buildings completed during this era. Gothic churches and cathedrals were fundamentally different to Norman buildings. The increase in knowledge and skills acquired over the years, meant that stone was specifically cut so that it fitted next to other stone blocks with precision. Therefore, the large blocks of stone favoured by the Normans, were replaced by shaped stone. Another major change was that the hollow walls used by the Normans were not used by later architects. Walls and pillars were solid and this allowed them to cope with much greater weights. This simple fact allowed churches and especially cathedrals to be much larger than Norman ones. This, along with the money gathering ability of the Church, explains why the cathedrals and churches of the Gothic era were so much larger than previous ones.

He was the son of Stefan Nemanja , grand župan of Serbia. As a young boy, he has longed for spiritual life, so he has run away to the Holy Mount Athos, where he entered an order and died as a monk under the name of Simeon. From the emperor and the patriarch, Sava has obtained independence of the Serbian Church, and he has become the first Serbian archbishop
CHURCH OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD - RUŽICA Kalemegdan 6 It is located near north-east walls of Belgrade Fortress, under the Zindan gate. In the time of Despot Stefan Lazareviæ there was an old church of the same name, which was destroyed when the Turks conquered Belgrade in 1521. What is now the church, was a gunpowder storage in the XVIII century, and turned into a military church in 1867-1869. It was heavily damaged after World War I and renewed in 1925. The iconostasis has been made by Kosta Todoroviæ, and the icons it bears were painted by monk Rafailo Momèiloviæ. The wall paintings were made by a Russian artist Andrey Bitsenko.

T he nature of early Christian architecture in Western Anatolia and its development is undoubtedly linked to the beginnings of Christianity itself and to its birthplace-Rome. Christian architecture in the first two centuries after Christ remains almost undetectable in the pagan Roman world. It is largely accepted that Christian worship was limited to the domestic front (Rodley 12; Krautheimer 24). However, by the middle of the 3rd century the Christian situation had changed drastically. The Christian Empire: 313-476
Church Architecture
After the Edict of Toleration (Milan) in 313, Christian art was permitted by the state. Emperor Constantine encouraged Christian art. In 380, Theodosius I (379-395) recognized Roman Christianity as the state religion. The Empire became a powerful patron of the Christian art. No longer did art have to be "underground," such as in the catacombs of Rome and inside house churches. For the first time, basilicas (churches whose design was adapted from that of Roman secular basilicas) were built for Christian worship. Inside the basilicas, artists did paintings and mosaics of biblical stories that could be viewed publicly.
An inside view of St. Peter's in Rome, about 1910. The old basilica is gone. Constantine played an important role in the rise of Christian architecture. He brought artists together from many places and gave them special favors. Some examples of basilicas that Constantine had built are the Lateran Basilica and old St. Peter's in Rome, the Church of the Apostles and the original Hagia Sophia in Constantinople , and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. An example of the Roman basilica of the age of Constantine is the church of

The Anatomy of Church Part 2, September 27, 1998. Let us now concentrate on the female symbolism that we find in church architecture.
http://askelm.com/doctrine/d980928.htm
DOCTRINE Home Page Doctrine Order The Anatomy of Church - Part 2 September 27, 1998 "In like fashion, the parts of temples ought to have dimensions of their several parts answering suitably to the general sum of their whole magnitude. Now the navel [Latin: umbilicus] is naturally in the exact center of the body. For if a man lies on his back with hands and feet outspread, and the center of a circle is place on his navel, his figure and toes will be touched by the circumference. Also a square will be found described within a figure, in the same way as a round figure is produced. For if we measure from the sole of the foot to the top of the head, and apply the measure to the outstretched hands, the breadth will be found equal to the height, just like sites [of temples] which are squared by rule" (ibid., Book III.ch. 1 ,sect.3). With such an architectural posture in mind, we are now ready to carry the symbolism of the human body (in this case, the female body) into the heart of Christian architectural themes that were used near the period of the Crusades when Gothic [barbaric] designs were becoming popular. Early Irish Churches Blatantly Show Female Genitalia The Christian men in Ireland who were in authority over their flocks had churches built in order to perform the liturgies and rituals associated with their sacred duties. And what did the church authorities place at the entrances to many of their churches just before and after the time of the Crusades? In full view of the congregations that attended the various Catholic Churches then in Ireland, the priests and monks placed a statue carved out of stone (usually) showing a squatting woman with her legs apart and the genitalia of the woman held open with her hands. Such images were widespread in Ireland and each one was known as a

T he architectural richness of the Russian Empire reflected its long history and the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of its people. Prokudin-Gorskii photographed medieval churches and monasteries in European Russia and mosques and Islamic schools in the Caucasus and Central Asia. Many of the buildings he photographed were later destroyed by war or revolution, but others survived the Soviet period and have been restored. In addition to religious buildings, Prokudin-Gorskii photographed houses, country estates, factories, and barns. His skill as a photographer and the technical sophistication of his methods are apparent in the treatment of subjects ranging from church interiors to panoramic shots of cities.

Architecture, Music and Religious Art. The Church’s Lost Pearl Is Re-Found
The most disturbing transformation the Catholic Church has undergone in the last half century is found in her liturgical artistic forms and expressions. Centuries of the Church’s wealth of artistic tradition has been forgotten. But work is underway to restore such treasures back to her by Sandro Magister                                 VERSIONE ITALIANA
ROMA – The news hit Rome and then soon spread across the world: last October a modern Catholic church, designed and built by the Jewish architect Richard Meier, was consecrated in Rome’s Tor Tre Teste neighborhood (see photo).
The church’s ultra-modern architecture is characterized by white bold geometric lines and shapes. Its interior is flooded with bright rays of sunlight that penetrate through openings in the church’s peculiarly sail-shaped, high arched roof: “It’s a boat, like St. Peter’s little fishing boat plowing through the city’s rough seas,” the parish priest explains to confused visitors of the new construction.
Written atop a leaflet given to visitors of the new church is: “A Testimony to Evangelization”. The Roman Commission for Preservation of Faith had the flier printed to promote the spiritual meaning embodied in the church’s unique architecture. It’s rigid lines and shapes were designed to produce heavenly inspiration. And the protagonist of the Good News is found here, too: hanging high up on the far back wall of the church’s nave is a 17th century wood and millboard crucifix, salvaged from a more traditional suburban church.
