The Presentation of the Augsburg Confession
The Cornerstone of the"Mountain Church" in Seiffen - 1779
(Norman Adams Photos)
"To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man" - These words were engraved in golden letters on the cornerstone of the Mountain Church in the Saxon village of Seiffen in the year of our Lord 1779. In many respects, the design of our sanctuary has been inspired by this classic Lutheran Church. Our earnest and heartfelt prayer as we dedicate our new church today is that all may be done "To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man." May the Gospel resound in this House of God with power from on high. May His Word ever be preached among us in all of its saving truth and purity. May the Sacraments which our gracious Lord has established always be rightly administered in our congregation for the forgiveness of our sins and strengthening of our faith. We dedicate our church today, in the year of our Lord 2000 "To the Glory of God and the Salvation of Man." Church Architecture and Theology
"Architecture for churches is a matter of Gospel. A church that is interested in proclaiming the Gospel must also be interested in architecture, for year after year the architecture of the church proclaims a message that either augments the preached Word or conflicts with it. Church architecture cannot, therefore, be left to those of refined tastes, the aesthetic elite, or even the professional architect. If the Gospel of Christ is worthy or accurate verbal proclamation, week by week, it is also worthy of faithful architectural proclamation, where its message speaks year after year...It is most unfortunate that many people understand the word architecture solely in terms of style...A church is a place where God’s people gather together to worship Him, and how they worship, as well as what they believe, is either reinforced or undermined by the architecture. Church architecture is therefore first and foremost a matter of theology rather than a matter of style."

News Releases Greek Releases Orthodox Observer Journey of Faith ... HIGHER EDUCATION Orthodox Art and Architecture John Yiannias
Introduction
Anyone who witnesses an Orthodox liturgy for the first time will be struck by its frank appeal to the senses. The central actions of the Liturgy are, to be sure, the consecration and distribution of the bread and wine that constitute the Lord's Body and Blood. But the chanting and choral singing, the incense, the vestments and ritual movements of the priest and acolytes, and the images everywhere around are not mere embellishments. They are integral aspects of the whole liturgical "event". They reveal and celebrate its meaning. It has been so for centuries. An old Russian chronicle relates that Prince Vladimir of Kiev (d. 1015) could not decide which faith to adopt for himself and his people until his envoys reported from Constantinople that they had witnessed services there: "We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth," they declared, "for on earth there is no such splendor or such beauty, and we are at a loss to describe it. We know only that God dwells there among men." This often-repeated account may be anecdotal, but it contains a valid observation: the Orthodox Church makes no sharp distinction in its worship between the spiritual and the aesthetic. One becomes aware of God's presence through the senses, in the experience of "splendor" and "beauty."

Origins of Christian places of worship
The architecture of Christian worship space grew out of the regular meetings of the followers of Christianity in private houses and synagogues , and occasionally in catacombs when necessary. When either the size of the community outgrew the space or the complexity of the uses of the space outpaced the architectural adaptation of houses, buildings began to be built specifically for worship. This became much more feasible and common when Constantine stopped the Roman persecution of Christians by issuing the Edict of Milan in 311. edit
In the first century
The first Christians were, like Jesus Jews resident in Palestine who worshipped on occasion in the Temple in Jerusalem and weekly in local synagogues. Temple worship was a ritual involving sacrifice, occasionally including the sacrifice of animals in atonement for sin, offered to

Architecture The first part of the Middle Ages saw very little building of any kind in western Europe, as people struggled to adjust to the fall of Rome . Some small churches were built here and there in the Visigothic Vandal , and Merovingian kingdoms, but not much else.
In the eastern Mediterranean, however, the Roman emperors built great churches and palaces, like Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul) about 550 AD . In Italy, the Ostrogoths built churches and palaces too. And when the Arabs conquered the southern and eastern Mediterranean in the late 600's AD, they also built great mosques and palaces, like the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. In 800, they built the great mosque in Kairouan
By this time, Western Europe was also doing better.

TIMELINE English architecture did not, of course, follow a rigid timeline, with clear divisions between periods and styles of building. What follows is an attempt to organize themes and philosophies of building styles in a rough chronological order, realising that many periods overlapped each other and many styles may well have been in use in the same region or even in the same building at the same time.

Anglo-Saxon Architecture
Anglo-Saxon church tower England is not blessed with an abundance of surviving Anglo-Saxon buildings. There is good reason for this scarcity; the Anglo-Saxon period was one beset by frequent warfare and violent invasions, particularly by the Vikings in the period 800-950. These invaders, quite naturally, burned and destroyed most of the settlements they came across, in their search for plunder and martial glory. For this reason most surviving examples of Anglo-Saxon architecture date from either 600-725 or 900-1050. Unfortunately for posterity, most Saxon buildings were constructed of wood with wattle and daub walls. The depredations of the Danes left very few of these flammable buildings standing. The only buildings the Anglo-Saxons tended to build in more permanent stone were their monasteries and churches. Here, at least, there are several good examples remaining to see today. (See our in-depth article on Anglo-Saxon churches
