Forgotten Stones. A Guided Tour of
the Places of Liturgy by Sandro Magister
L’espresso An unusual book gives new voice and meaning to the Church’s architectural
patrimony – to fight the risk that it will be forgotten
ROMA – In the apostolic exhortation “Ecclesia in Europa” released June 28, John Paul II wrote, among other things, in paragraph 70: “Certain signs point to a weakening in the sense of mystery in the very liturgical celebrations which should be fostering that sense. It is, therefore, urgent that the authentic sense of the liturgy be revived in the Church.” This warning strikes at a true critical point. The forgetting of self, of Christian identity, which the pope attributes to Europe, has a corollary in the Church. It is the inability to read, understand and live the material places in which the Church celebrates its own rites. Church buildings are the heart of liturgical space. On the level of certain modern constructions that are mere senseless cubatures, even ancient churches suffer a sensational lack of understanding. Liturgical space is experienced indifferently, as an occasional shell: It no longer inspires enchantment, it doesn’t aid prayer, and it doesn’t let the celebration’s significance shine through. And so today’s Christians squander the extraordinary symbolic patrimony that tradition has handed on to them.

Church Architecture in Belarus List of fonds Heathen temples already existed in pre-Christian architecture which were typical of Pagan culture - flat sites with idols, surrounded by a fence and sickle-shaped ditches with fires burning in them. However, the rise of Christianity, coupled with the rapid development of towns and cities, stimulated the formation of new trends in architecture. A new type of building appeared - a stone, cross-shaped temple crowned by domes , built of flat, square bricks - plinths. During the Tenth & Eleventh centuries, the temples in Belarus were, for the most part, being built by master craftsmen imported from Byzantium. The Cathedral of St. Sophia in Polotsk, built between 1044 and 1066, can be considered the earliest of the important churches built in modern Belarus. It was constructed with plinths, according to the so-called "concealed" brickwork technique. This cathedral founded the main principles of the local traditional school, manifested in the central-pyramid composition. Probably these principles followed the influence of local building practice, which had already been formed by the traditional, wooden, folk architecture. In the Twelvth Century, the original

The rounded East end of a church. Most often found in orthodox churches. ALTAR A raised flat surface like a table. It is used for key religious rituals, such as the Eucharist. Originally altars were used for offerings or sacrifices to gods. In many churches the altar will have a "frontal" cloth in the appropriate colour for the time of year, which may be richly decorated. BALDACHINO You won't find many of these in Britain. It's a heavy canopy over the altar. Westminster Cathedral, and St Peter's in Rome both have good examples. BAY Traditional churches are divided into bays by pillars. BELFRY The part of the church where the Church Bells operate. It may be divided into a Bell-Chamber, where the bells are hung, and the Ringing-chamber, the room where the bell-ringers go to ring the bells. BOSS Or "ceiling boss". A knob projecting from the ceiling of a church where the supporting arches of the roof meet. Often richly decorated or painted.

Alley Poyner Events.... Preparations are underway for the Ride For Hope . The transcontinental bicycle trek will cover 3700 miles from Astoria, Oregon (May 31) to Portsmouth, New Hampshire (July 25). Alley Poyner principal Michael Alley and his family have spearheaded this trip in a desire to raise money for The Hope Center , which provides safe refuge, education, recreation, and life skills training to inner city youth in North Omaha. The groundbreaking for the new skating rink took place on December 23rd. The Hope Center also celebrated their 5th anniversary on January 20th. The groundbreaking for First Christian Church in Council Bluffs will take place on April 25th. Alley Poyner continues to immerse itself in other church projects, with seven church renovations and additions at the moment. Since our beginning in 1987, Alley Poyner has completed over 40 church projects and has always been involved with at least one church at any given time. Our insightful view towards creating spaces that reflect the needs and values of the church and congregation have led us to the design of several church facilities.

Material History of American Religion Project
The Built Environment of American Religion:
    The State of the Art
Peter W. Williams Until recently, the study of America's religious architecture and landscape was something that had largely fallen through the cracks of academe. The main problem is that such a study requires interdisciplinary (or multidisciplinary) competencies and interests that not many people have heretofore possessed. (I discuss this further in an autobiographical context in "Interpreting America's Religious Landscape and Architecture" in Chronicle of Higher Education 43:46 (7/25/97), B8-B9). The scholarly slot where such investigations might best be expected to flourish is American Studies, which unfortunately, as the ASA's annual programs demonstrate, has not exactly been a hotbed of ferment in religious studies. This may be changing, however, as will be evident in passing in what follows, as doctoral students at a variety of institutions are pursuing themes of religious building. For a quick survey of available literature, we might divide it up as follows:

Doylestown Architecture Home Welcome to Doylestown Architecture: Opening the door to Doylestown We love Doylestown, and we hope you enjoy our view of some of the town's historic architecture. This website was designed with high school students, and their teachers, in mind. We've provided the sort of information students look for when they begin to study their built environment. We have also included a page for teachers who want to study architecture in their classrooms, including suggested resources for them to help their students evaluate the information they find online. This site was developed by librarians, and we encourage you to consult books as well as online sources for this and any other subject. Therefore, you'll find a list of books, as well as links, on each of our pages. While we seek to inform students and others about various styles and periods of American architecture, we have determined that providing a glossary of architectural terms is beyond the scope of this project. MONUMENTS OF CHURCH ARCHITECTURE
IN THE TOTMA REGION William C. Brumfield
There are many settlements in the Russian north whose architectural monuments reflect an earlier period of economic prosperity and strategic importance that has since decreased, or vanished altogether: Belozersk, Kargopol, Velikii Ustiug, Solvychegodsk. Among these treasures of the north, Totma must rank as one of the most distinctive to the modern visitor. Located on the Sukhona River midway between Vologda and Velikii Ustiug, Totma is a small town of some 10,000 souls, and yet from its midst there rise some of the most dramatic forms of church architecture to be found anywhere in the north. Even before arriving in Totma, there are examples of impressive architecture in the surrounding countryside, such as the late eighteenth-century Church of the Resurrection in the village of Tsareva. Now empty and percariously perched on a high bank above the Tsareva river, it still retains its imposing neoclassical form. ( Photo 1 Whether one approaches Totma by road over the rolling fields and forests to the west or from the wide valley of the Sukhona River, the appearance of these tall spires on the landscape calls forth a sense of wonder. I have traveled to Totma on sultry summer mornings, when the apparition of its churches shimmers above the surrounding fields. But I have found Totma most remarkable in the winter, for example on a bitterly cold (-30 degrees Centigrade), sunny day in early January 1997, when the church towers reached above the plumes of ice haze and smoke from hundreds of snow-draped wooden houses. (
