Paper $25.00tx 0-226-17303-8 Fall 2002 Six remarkable churches built by Nicholas Hawksmoor from 1712 to 1731 still stand in London. In this book, architectural historian Pierre de la Ruffinière du Prey examines these designs as a coherent wholea single masterpiece reflecting both Hawksmoor's design principles and his desire to reconnect, architecturally, with the "purest days of Christianity." "Du Prey's well-argued book enhances our understanding of Hawksmoor's design processes, and sheds light into the murky corners of early 18th-century theological and political concerns. This latest book adds lustre to an engaging writer's reputation."James Stevens Curl, Building Design "The close study of Nicholas Hawksmoor's churches in London extends du Prey's fascination with the legacy, appropriation, and adaption of classical principles and motifs in the evolving pattern of architectural representation. . . . The resulting book is a fascinating reconstruction of the social networks and cultural resources upon which Hawksmoor drew in designing his remarkable churches, enriched by intelligent analysis of the architectural fabric." Divergent Paths: The Development of Newfoundland Church Architecture The following essay is adapted from a lecture given by Prof Shane O'Dea to the Newfoundland Historical Society on September 23, 1982. There is a marked distinction in the architecture of religious buildings in Newfoundland, a distinction determined at first by period and then by denomination. The earliest churches, built before 1846, tended to be similar to each other, and essentially primitive or at least simple. In the 1840s the cathedrals of both the Roman Catholic and the Anglican churches were begun in the capital, and these had a significant effect on churches later constructed by these denominations. In consequence, when looking at Newfoundland's religious architecture, one is looking at an early period that runs from 1662 to 1800, followed by a span of limited development (1800-1846), then by a interval of cathedral building, and finally by a period when these cathedrals influenced other construction. This essay focuses on the latter two phases of church architectural development. Anglican Church, St. John's.

French Cathedrals, Basilicas and Churches @ Globe-Gate
A cathedral is more than a church; this cruciform building is the seat of a Catholic bishop or an archbishop's dominion. A basilica is simply a very large church, though the word denoted a large public meeting hall, separated into aisles by a double colonnade, in Roman times. We have also represented a number of parish and abbey churches, but most of them were constructed in medieval times, and fall into a limited number of architectural categories:
Romanesque architecture seems to stylize the vision which European Christians had of the Roman homes and public buildings used as places of worship. It is characterized by massive walls with little or no buttressing, moderately pitched roofs, rounded arches, column-supported lintels and its churches are somber from the small number and stature of their windows. Here are some links which conceptualize architectural and artistic features of Romanesque style:
Thinner walls held up by elaborate and pronounced buttressing, vertical lines, pointed arches and steep spires, along with extensive use of stained glass windows characterize Gothic architecture, which appears around 1130. Here are some links which conceptualize architectural and artistic features of Gothic style:

Sacred Geometry and Armenian Architecture
INTRODUCTION
SACRED NUMBERS ABOUT SACRED GEOMETRY EXAMPLES: GARNI ... EXAMPLES: ECHMIADZIN AND EARLY CHURCHES

Ugh! Geometry on a tour? I bet you thought you passed that class long ago. If you can bear to remember your geometry classes, you will find that the origins of mathematics and how it was used by the ancients to construct their cities and temples has not changed that much over time, it has just become more complex (and has fueled the success of hand calculators). The essentials remain the same: a circle, a square, a rectangle, and the myriad permutations of those forms. Exactly where geometry came from we are not sure, but the source has moved a little East of where people used to think it came from. From Classical Greece, where it received its most philosophic and poetic applications (and from where Western cultures inherited it), geometry’s origins moved first to Egypt and Mesopotamia, and then to the Armenian plateau, where the earliest known cities are located. For without geometry, you cannot build anything, and its knowledge was key to survival, and believed to be a key to unlocking the secrets of the universe. Almost literally, geometry meant contact with the gods. It was considered a way of imitating the structure where the sun (probably the first god) and the moon (probably the second god) governed the natural order early man believed if he could “map” the universe, he would be able to predict the whims of gods, who sent punishing droughts, floods and pestilence on the land around him.
