Real problems with a fictional movie
By STEVE PERSALL published August 24, 2001 Peter D. Alexander, The Profit director. Peter D. Alexander believes he's doing a public service with his film The Profit. For the Church of Scientology, The Profit is just a nuisance. Moviegoers can see for themselves beginning tonight. Alexander's work of fiction, based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, begins an exclusive run at Clearwater Cinema Cafe at the corner of U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road. Alexander declares his movie to be a warning against the influence of religious cults. It's the story of a charismatic opportunist named L. Conrad Powers, who bears a close resemblance to Hubbard. Powers creates the Church of Scientific Spiritualism in the image of Scientology as projected by decades of media coverage and courtroom disputes. Ask Alexander if The Profit is based on Scientology, and he'll offer coy denials. Answering yes could make him vulnerable to the Church of Scientology's legal machine, yet he can't resist steering a questioner and moviegoers to that conclusion. He's stretching the liberty of fiction to its limit.

THE ECCLESIASTICAL HIERARCHY OF THE SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
The Church of Scientology is formed into an ecclesiastical structure which unifies and aligns a multitude of diverse religious activities including not only auditing and training, but proselytization, ecclesiastical management, relay of communication, production of dissemination materials and many other functions. Thus the Scientology religious community is united both by common beliefs and practices and an organizational form uniquely suited to its religious mission. Scientologists come together in a worldwide hierarchical religious community. The structure of this community is an important, functional part of the Scientology religion. Because Scientology Scripture requires that its religious practices be ministered in an orthodox manner, the hierarchical structure helps ensure that individual churches receive the support and guidance needed to do this. All Scientologists are thus assured of an orthodox religious observance in every church around the world. Scientology Gives Believers a Map on the Road to Self-fulfillment
by Cathy Norman L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, once wrote: "When a culture has fallen totally away from spiritual pursuits into materialism, one must begin by demonstrating they are each a soul, not a material animal. From this realization of their own religious nature, individuals can again come to an awareness of God and become more themselves." In Scientology, we have no dogma about God. Nor do we ask you to take our teachings on faith. Instead, we start by showing you things about your spiritual nature, yourself, others and the world around you. From there you begin your road to truth and relationship with the Ultimate. At an early age, Hubbard began to search for a means by which man could discover his true nature and realize his potential. For more than 30 years, he consulted the great religious works of the East and Greece and Rome, the philosophical works of Hegel and Kant, the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud, and the physical sciences. He also examined the beliefs and rites of primitive cultures, primarily firsthand. In May 1950, Hubbard published his initial findings in

Google was accused Wednesday of effectively removing from the Internet a Web site that is critical of the Church of Scientology after it deleted links to some of the site's pages from its search engine. Xenu.net , said in a Usenet posting that the complaint demanded that Google take down a large number of references to different parts of Xenu.net. "The complaint mentions a ridiculous list of addresses, which successfully removes the whole site from their engine," he said. Digital rights advocates said the Church of Scientology's takedown request is noteworthy because it underscores potential conflicts between the DMCA and free speech. A representative for the Church of Scientology could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Church of Scientology was founded by author L. Ron Hubbard as an organization dedicated to the practice of Scientology , an "applied religious philosophy" formulated by Hubbard. It was first incorporated in the United States as a nonprofit organization in Camden, New Jersey in December , and currently is considered to be a tax-exempt religious nonprofit organization under the tax code administered by the Internal Revenue Service By contrast, the governments of Germany and Belgium officially regard the Church of Scientology as a totalitarian cult ; in France , a parliamentary report has classed the Church as a dangerous cult; in the United Kingdom , Scientology is not regarded as meeting the legal standards for being considered a bona fide religion. The status of Scientology continues to arouse controversy in a number of countries around the world. Net archive silences Scientology critic
Last modified: September 24, 2002, 1:05 PM PDT By Lisa M. Bowman
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Buckling under pressure from the Church of Scientology, the Internet Archive has removed a church critic's Web site from its system. The Internet Archive , a site that preserves snapshots of old Web pages and bills itself as "a library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form," no longer contains links to archival pages of Xenu.net . Instead, surfers are pointed to a page telling them the site was taken down "per the request of the site owner." However, Xenu.net operator Andreas Heldal-Lund said he never made any such request. Heldal-Lund, a Norwegian businessman and longtime church critic, said he's eager for people to read archived pages of his site. "I'm the author, and I never asked that it be removed," he said. "I believe what's happening in this case is important history."

Representatives of some religious groups testified before the Senate Committee. Amongst the witnesses were actor John Travolta and musician Chick Corea. Several European countries, like Russia, Bulgaria and Austria were mentioned to recently have introduced legislation to curb proliferation of so-called "new" religious groups. Some European governments have established government agencies to investigate "sects" and "cults".
Many countries were mentioned but based on the witness testimony Germany stood out as the most blatant violator of the Helsinki accord on human rights for their government sponsored religious persecution.
A representative of the Christliche Gemeinde Koeln - Germany spoke of witch-hunt, bomb threats, harassment and revocation of tax free status. Testifying on behalf of the Scientology church, Chick Corea, a international renowned musician, who regularly performed in Germany at publicly sponsored concerts, reported of German government agencies canceling his contract to perform in Germany and publicly pressuring other local governments to prevent him from performing in any concert in Germany. He told of a German concert contract including a clause threatening a $50,000 fine if he would as much as mention the word "Scientology".
