  • Name: Church of Scientology Scientology means "knowing about knowing," from the Latin word scio and the Greek word logos Founder: Lafayette Ronald (L. Ron) Hubbard Date of Birth/Death: March 13, 1911/January 24, 1986 Birth Place: Tilden, Nebraska Year Founded: Biography of Founder:
  • According to texts published by the Church of Scientology and its web page pertaining primarily to its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, always referred to as L. Ron by Scientologists, experienced early in his life the many facets of the human mind. At the age of 12, he learned from Commander Joseph C. Thompson, who was the first military official to study under Sigmund Freud in Vienna, Austria, the theory of psychoanalysis. Hubbard was also influenced by his many world journeys to exotic locales, thus gaining an appreciation for Eastern philosophies rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. His studies in mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics at George Washington University generated a scientific background to his beliefs in the human mind, although his studies did not earn him a degree. As a naval officer during World War II, he suffered injuries that left him blind and crippled. During his recovery, he once again examined Freudian psychoanalytical theory and Eastern philosophies. He credits the eventual cure of his disabilities to his findings about the human mind during this time, findings that became the central elements of a religious doctrine he later called Dianetics.

    SCIENTOLOGY
    (THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY)
Scientology, one of the genuinely new religions to originate in the United States in the twentieth century, was founded by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). The Church of Scientology believes "that Man is basically good, that he is seeking to survive, [and] that his survival depends on himself and upon his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe" (from Church of Scientology's statement of beliefs). Hubbard's extensive writings and taped lectures constitute the beliefs and the basis for the religion's practices. The aims of Scientology are "A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights." L. Ron Hubbard grew up mostly in Montana, but also lived in Nebraska; Seattle, Washington; and Washington, DC . As a child he read extensively, and by the age of twelve was studying the theories of Freud. As a teenager Hubbard traveled throughout Asia and the East, continuing his studies of philosophy, religion, and human nature. In 1929 he returned to the United States and in 1930 enrolled in George Washington University, studying mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics. Hubbard wanted to answer the basic questions relating to the human being's nature, and decided to do further research on his own. To finance this, he began a literary career in the early 1930s, publishing numerous stories and screen plays in various genres, including adventure, mystery, and science fiction. Hubbard continued his travels and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was injured during the war, and used some of his own theories concerning the human mind to assist in his healing.

    Cruise's private Scientology sessions
    MSNBC/January 31, 2002
By Jeannette Walls with Ashley Pearson
Tom Cruise has been working overtime on behalf of the Church of Scientology. On Wednesday, it made headlines overseas that the "Vanilla Sky" actor, a devout Scientologist, had met with Dan Coats, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, to lobby the case for the rights of the church in Germany. A top church official, however, tells The Scoop that Cruise has been privately meeting with top politicians on behalf of the church for the last few years. Kurt Weiland, a director of the church, says that among the U.S. officials who have met with Cruise to discuss the Church of Scientology's plight are Attorney General John Ashcroft and Sen. Jesse Helms, the Republican from North Carolina who is also senior member of Foreign Relations Committee. Weiland says that there were "private meetings and correspondence" between Cruise and both Helms and Ashcroft "a few years ago." When asked if those meetings and letters resulted in anything, Weiland said, "Yes. Efforts were made by them to let the German government know that . . . . they were missing the mark." The issue has been a cause celebre in the church for years. John Travolta, also a Scientologist, reportedly discussed the plight of the church in Germany with Bill Clinton when he was playing the then-president in the movie "Primary Colors." And in 1996, a group of Hollywood heavyweights wrote a letter to then-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl about the country's treatment of Scientology.

    Imagine this
L Ron Hubbard was a broke Science Fiction writer, with only an electric typewriter to his name. He wasn't even a particulary good science fiction writer, down there in the sludges of the pulps. One day, he wrote a book and got a whole bunch of people fascinated with his observations, all of which he said were "scientific fact." You can admire his chutzpah: He was worth around $ 450 million at the time of his death. Too bad not a single one of his words was true. And if he hadn't been so obsessed with collecting money and keeping secrets, he could have had it all: Money, fame, tax exemptions, adoring followers. But things always seemed to be tumbling down on his head, and his paranoia got worse and worse by the day. His paranoia was one of many things that outlived him. And that's probably why you're reading this page.

W hat is SCIENTOLOGY applied religious philosophy? T he word Scientology means literally "knowing how to know." Scientology contains knowledge and practical technology for handling life. And life is more than just the cells and tissues of the body; man is a spiritual being, and Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relation to itself, the universe and other life. I n today's world, man has many problems. It's often difficult and even heartbreaking to deal with other people, carry on relationships, keep a marriage together, raise children, maintain and improve a career, and have enough money to survive without having to worry about it. There are many different philosophies about life, but what good is a philosophy that doesn't help people handle these things and better their own lives? N o matter what you may have been told, you don't have to "adjust" to bad conditions in your life. You are not the pawn or puppet of forces beyond your control. You are a spiritual being, and your potential abilities are far greater than anyone has ever permitted you to believe. U sing the knowledge and technology of Scientology, you can improve your life. Scientology is no ivory-tower speculation about life. It contains practical, workable principles you can use every day to handle whatever comes up, and in so doing, finally achieve the goals you set for yourself.

Church of Scientology: A Religious Mafia?
By Craig Branch Controversy continues to rage around Scientology , due mostly to the totalitarian and abusive nature of its practices. The evolution and history of Scientology raises serious and fundamental questions about freedoms and protections of religion and even what or who defines a religion. Scientology is an anomaly on even a diverse religious landscape. It does, in fact, involve religious belief (in what most outsiders would regard as science fiction). But that belief appears to have been built chiefly as a cover for exploitive commercial operations. Scientology's history of terror and abuse appears to be the result of its founder's delusion and paranoia. Evidence of L. Ron Hubbard's delusional character was well documented in court where the trial judge concluded, "The organization [Scientology] clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, LRH [L. Ron Hubbard]. The evidence portrays a man who has been virtually a pathological liar when it comes to his history, background and achievements." (Church of Scientology v. Armstrong, No. C420153, California Supreme Court, 1984)
