Chronic illness: Acceptance is the first step toward healing
October 20, 1999 Web posted at: 12:27 PM EDT (1627 GMT) In this story: A widespread problem Learning to cope RELATEDS By Susan Milstrey Wells (WebMD) At age 34, Sally has been sick for the past 21 years. As a teenager, she frequently missed school and fell asleep visiting friends. Extended illness prolonged her graduate studies in clinical psychology. Sally and her family thought she was just prone to being sick. When, at age 24, she received a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, Sally denied that she had a chronic disease. "I'd felt this way for so many years that I'd normalized it," she says. But Sally now believes that denying she was sick kept her from taking the steps she needed to get well.

Chronic illness burden rising faster than expected
WASHINGTON (AP) Nearly half of Americans suffer at least one chronic disease, everything from allergies to heart disease 20 million more than doctors had anticipated this year, researchers say. And they warn that the fast-growing toll, now at 125 million among a population of 276 million, will reach 157 million by 2020. One-fifth of Americans have two or more chronic illnesses, complicating their care and making it more expensive.

to CrescentLife ask the expert Depression and Chronic Illness Depression is one of the most common and potentially dangerous complications of every chronic illness. According to one survey depression was found to be common in patients diagnosed with: recent heart attacks (45%), hospitalized cancer patients (42%), recent stroke survivors (40%), and people with multiple sclerosis (40%), Parkinson's disease (40%), and diabetes (33%).
Any chronic condition can trigger depression, but risk increases in direct proportion to the severity of the illness and the life disruption it causes. In the general population, the lifetime risk of depression is 10% to 25% for women and 5% to 12% for men. However, the prevalence of depression in those with chronic illnesses is much higher 25% to 33%.
Depression caused by chronic illness often aggravates the illness, especially if the condition causes pain, fatigue, or disruption of social life. Depression makes pain hurt more. It causes fatigue and lethargy that can exacerbate the loss of energy of many chronic conditions. Depression also aggravates social disruption because it tends to make people withdraw into social isolation. Depression also impairs the immune system, which can hurt the body's efforts to combat chronic illness.

The Alan Guttmacher Institute CONGRESS BRIEFED ON SELF MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC ILLNESS RESEARCH More than 45 percent of adults struggle with a chronic health condition that affects their daily activities. From diabetes to asthma, heart disease, depression, obesity, and AIDS, more and more Americans are living with chronic illnesses. More than 90 million Americans live with one or more chronic illness; at least 22 million live with three chronic illnesses. Coping with a complex chronic illness such as diabetes affects the individual as well as family members throughout the entire lifespan. On March 12th, the Coalition for the Advancement of Health Through Behavioral and Social Science Research (CAHT-BSSR), along with the Decade of Behavior, the American Psychological Association, COSSA, the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences, and the Society for Research in Child Development, sponsored a congressional briefing to bring the need for additional research to help Americans effectively manage their chronic conditions to the attention of policymakers. Three distinguished social and behavioral scientists, Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob, James Hill, and Dana Goldman, discussed the current scientific knowledge about self-management and directions for research that have the potential to improve the ability of people to manage and enhance their health.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Your Natural Guide to Healing with Diet, Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs, Exercise, and Other Natural Methods > Customer Review #1: Do NOT but this book

This is the worst book about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that I have ever read! His suggestions to exercise show clearly that he NO understanding of CFS/CFIDS! Yes, exercise will help many people with fatigue, even chronic fatigue; but not Chronic Fatigue SYNDROME. For someone with true CFS (also known as CFDIS) exercise will make things worse, sometimes far worse!
He also talks about all kinds of other things (such as hypothiroidism) that can cause fatigue but have nothing to do with CFS. (other than the fact that if you have CFS these things have already been ruled out by your doctor and are not the cause). So long discussions of those causes of fatigue are useless if youve already been diagnosed!

Jerome Burne reveals why more of us should steer clear of wheat http://www.guardian.co.uk/health/story/0,3605,793423,00.html Tuesday September 17, 2002
The Guardian If you suffer from a condition such as osteoporosis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis or depression, you're unlikely to blame your breakfast cereal. After all, intolerance of wheat, or coeliac disease (CD), is a an allergic reaction to a protein called gluten, thought to affect only about one in 1,000 people.
But now two American clinicians, James Braly and Ron Hoggan, have published a book, Dangerous Grains, claiming that what was thought to be a relatively rare condition may be more widespread than was previously thought. Braly and Hoggan suggest that gluten intolerance does not just affect a few people with CD, but as much as 2-3% of the population. They claim that gluten sensitivity (GS) is at the root of a proportion of cases of cancer, auto-immune disorders, neurological and psychiatric conditions and liver disease. The implication is that the heavily wheat-based western diet - bread, cereals, pastries, pasta - is actually making millions of people ill. Your doctor, if asked about CD, would tell you that it involves damage to the gut wall, which makes for problems absorbing certain nutrients, such as iron, calcium and vitamin D. As a result, you are more likely to develop conditions such as osteoporosis and anaemia, as well as a range of gastrointestinal problems. Children who have it are often described as "failing to thrive". The proof that you have CD comes when gut damage shows up in a biopsy. The treatment, which has a high rate of success, is to remove gluten - found in rye and barley as well as wheat - from your diet.
