Why God Allows Pain: A Correct Answer Is Critical
A patient who has been healthy for years is now seriously ill. No one seems to know why this happened. One answer comes from a college course on human physiology. Pain along with thirty other symptoms are warnings that can be ended if a person stops an activity that repeatedly injures a part of his body. A person injuries himself physically or chemically. Starting at a young age, a person is taught to avoid physical injuriescuts, falls or trauma. Unfortunately, there is little information given to children or adults how to avoid chemical injuriesputting something into the body that damages it. The pain and swelling comes from the inflammation that comes from the injuries. A single injury causes short-term inflammation. As an example, a house painter breaks his ankle falling off a ladder. This is a physical injury that will not be repeated. Damage from something entering the body is a chemical injury. It is repeated because a person is unaware that a small number of the hundreds of substances entering his body cause tiny injuries. What destroys joints, nerves, blood vessels are numerous tiny injuries that accumulate over the years. What went wrong? Let's start at the beginning by asking five questions.

The Emotional Implications of Chronic Illness
On MHE Patients and Their Families

Ronni Michelson, MSW, LSW and Susan Wynn
As sisters who have gone through numerous life crises together, we have seen the effects of illness, both acute and chronic, on family dynamics. During the last few years, Multiple Hereditary Exostoses has become an integral part of our lives, and we would like to share some of our observations and thoughts on the matter. MHE affects more than the bones. It can also impact the emotional well being of the person who has it, as well as the patient's family.
As we all know, no one passes through life's journey unscathed, and for the most part we manage to cope with the stress and/or anxiety as situations present themselves. However, chronic illness and pain present their own problems, and MHE itself carries with it additional challenges.
As MHE is a rare, orphan disease, many in the health care professions are just beginning to learn about the specifics of this disorder. Some families have reported experiences where doctors were unable to successfully diagnose and/or treat some of the ancillary components of this disorder (i.e., fatigue, poor sleep habits, chronic and/or unexplained pain, etc.). As the parent of a child with MHE, and from my experience in talking with other families, it appears that a holistic approach taken to care for the whole individual is undermined by treatment being fragmented. This is because the patient may be seen by many specialists looking at symptoms from very different perspectives, and a correlation is not always made. This can be frustrating for many patients and families, since it tends to invalidate the very real symptoms that are being experienced.

Career focus: Doctors who have a chronic illness Susannah Baron and colleagues share their experiences of chronic illness and give some tips for those who might find themselves in a similar position Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma Illness seems to be a dirty word among doctors. Why do professionals whose vocation is caring for the sick find it so difficult to care for themselves and each other? It is almost as though once you are ill you have deserted and joined the ranks of the "sick others." Is it because ill colleagues remind doctors of their own mortality? True to form, I ignoredmy symptoms for at least six months. I put the chronic cough, drenching night sweats, swinging temperatures, severe chest pain, and constant fatigue down to flu and the usual problems of uprooting and starting a new job in a city where I knewno one. Even I couldn't ignore a large lump inmyneck, but I was told it was probably tuberculosis. Six weeks later I turned into a walking MRCP short case as my large B cell non-Hodgkin's tumour decided to occlude my left subclavian vein and cause mediastinal shift (first time I've ever felt a properly deviated trachea). It is truly frightening to suddenly become a patient: you tend to know the worst possible scenarios and want to know everything. I just wanted to be treated like a normal patient, but some doctors couldn't see past the fact that I "used to be" one of them. Junior doctors would avoid me (too close for comfort), and I became used to the pitying, written-off look in people's eyes. Surprisingly, the nursing staff had no problems treating me as a regular person and were immensely kind and supportive, giving me all the information about chemotherapy that many of the doctors mistakenly assumed I would know.

Search for: Articles By Topic By Series By Date Self-Management Understanding Chronic Illness By Bruce Campbell (Second of a four-part series.) The first article in this series gave an overview of CFIDS and fibromyalgia. This article continues the theme of gathering information as one task you face as a patient with long-term illness. Learning about CFIDS and fibromyalgia means understanding how chronic illness differs from short-term illness, and understanding your unique situation. We will discuss those two topics, as well as describing various resources available to you to understand your illness. Understanding Chronic Illness Long-term illnesses like CFIDS and fibromyalgia are different from both short-term illness and terminal illness. Short-term or acute illnesses are temporary problems. They present you with brief interruptions of your life. Though sometimes frightening or painful, they are usually conditions in which diagnosis and treatment are clear, and the outcome predictable. Terminal illness, in contrast, is a life-threatening medical condition expected to end life. Perhaps when you first became ill with CFIDS or fibromyalgia you thought you had just another short-term illness, but one that kept hanging on. But at some point, you realized that you had entered a new realm. You were confronted by the fact that your illness was not a temporary interruption of your life, but a central fact around which your life revolved. Instead of resuming your previous life after a brief interruption or struggling with a terminal illness, you were faced with having to adjust to long-term, perhaps lifelong, symptoms and limitations.

This is merely a forwarded message but interesting: Preventive Environmental Medicine Effective Non-Drug Non-Surgical Solutions for Chronic Illnesses Dr. Joseph Mercola, 1443 W.Schaumburg, Schaumburg, IL 60194-4065 LOWER YOUR CARBS AND LOWER YOUR INSULIN LEVELS! Over the past fifteen years, our dietary establishment has made a virtual industry of extolling the virtues of carbohydrates. We're constantly told that carbohydrates are the good guys of nutrition, and that, if we eat large amounts of them, the world should be a better place. In such a world, the experts tell us, there will be no heart disease and no obesity. Under such guidance, Americans are gobbling breads, cereals, and pastas as if there were no tomorrow, trying desperately to reach that 80 to 85 percent of total calories advocated by the high-carb extremists. This creates a terrible paradox: people are eating less fat and getting fatter! No medical authority will tell you that excess body fat makes you healthier. There is but one alarming conclusion to reach: a high- carbohydrate, low-fat diet may be dangerous to your health. Overeating carbohydrate foods can prevent a higher percentage of fats from being used for energy, and lead to a decrease in endurance and an increase in fat storage.

RWJF Data Portrait: Chronic Illness in America
A Portrait of Americans With Diabetes Health Status and Daily Functioning People with diabetes are three times as likely as the general population to report their health as fair or poor (40 vs. 13 percent), and only one-third as likely to report their health as excellent or very good (18 vs. 56 percent). People with diabetes are also three times as likely to report at least seven poor physical health days in the last month (36 vs. 12 percent). Coping and Managing Of all diabetics, 82 percent feel confident about managing their disease. Groups less likely to feel confident were those under 25, Hispanics, the uninsured, and diabetics who reported at least seven poor physical health days in the last month. To control their disease, about one-fifth of diabetics rely on insulin injections, another one-fifth on diet and exercise, and the remaining three-fifths on oral medications. Those that use diet and exercise to control their diabetes are the most likely to be very confident about managing their disease. Other Health Behaviors Overall, three-fourths of diabetics do not get regular exercise, including 79 percent of those on oral medications and 77 percent of those taking insulin injections. Of note: 65 percent of diabetics who say they use diet and exercise to control their disease also say they do not get regular exercise.

Purpose:
We feel that people with chronic illnesses have much in common and we would all benefit from being linked in some way. Therefore, we plan to contact support groups for people with many types of chronic or long-term illnesses or conditions. We begin with an emphasis on innovative approaches to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, but eventually will cover topics ranging from everything from cancer, lupus and AIDS, to mental illness and substance abuse. Synergy occurs when a dynamic process of cooperation and interaction leads to results that would not have occurred without that process. The name Synergy reflects the process by which we hope to accomplish our goals for the chronically ill: to inspire hope, to educate about treatments, to provide resources, and to empower patients and their families to obtain the most beneficial treatments for themselves and to promote the research that will benefit all. Libidinal Hormones: Who is driving?
HORMONES ARE NOT DESTROYED by normal cooking heat
Hormones accumulate in the body until they are excreted in one's urine, or ejaculated, or used up metabolically to stimulate action or relaxation. We have created an environment in which many of the constants surrounding us encourage an increased production of libidinal hormones ...
  • how we grow our foods,
  • our food choices,
  • our hygiene and body care,
  • our entertainment,
  • our socializing,
  • our medicines,
  • our exercise frequency.

When additives and stimulants were absent in the human diet and daily physical exercise was almost exhausting, libidinal hormone presence and concentration were less. IN THE PAST 55 YEARS, more than at earlier times in history , more persons exposed to the above factors are feeling a greater intensity for sexual release than before. This frustrates interpersonal behavior and communication and the resulting relationship often splits. The result: disharmony constantly throwing anarchy into sexual frequency. When intimate relationships are beginning, sexual frequency is often high. During periods of relationship conflict, partner separation or partnership split - sexual frequency often drops to zero.
