It is important to look at the causes - viral, parasitic, environmental, hormonal - which can all cause problems. To be successful we must act as a detective by analyzing blood tests that will assist us with the clues. At that point we determine if we are dealing with a viral, toxin, nutritional or hormonal problem or a combination of all. Finding the cause and combining therapies often gets the best results towards the healing journey.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Here I found the theme of the X-files appropriate because this disease is still such a mystery. There's no sense in rewriting the CFS FAQ . So I'll give a very short introduction, immediately followed by some remarks and links about things that aren't in the faq. CFS is characterized by profound tiredness or fatigue. This fatigue very much reduces the level of physical activity as well as disables much of the cognitive functions. So called nonspecific symptoms include sore throat, muscle aches and pains, excessive sleep, malaise, fever, tender lymp nodes, muscle weakness, balance problems and nausea. CFS can only be diagnosed by autopsy or by ruling out other disorders. There exists no treatment. The disease makes many people lose their jobs. Social benefits are hard to get because the disease is often underestimated. Even close friends and family might give up on patients. Either because they don't understand, or because they lack the resources for taking care. In bad cases patients can't even feed themselves. The disease is said not to be fatal. That might be true for most patients, but it's hard to believe that there are no exceptions to the rule. I think I nearly died of total exhaustion myself. And there are reports of patients dying of the complications.

Chronic Fatigue Help
From Fatigued to Fantastic!: A Proven Program to Regain Vibrant Health, Based on a New Scientific Study Showing Effective Treatment for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia by Jacob Teitelbaum - Gets great reviews! Take a look! Hi, I’m Victoria Rider. I'm a recovering Chronic Fatigue Sufferer, and I'd like to help others. So I am now setting up this website. I am still recovering so it's not going as quickly as I’d like it to be but I have a sporadic newsletter that I send out when I hear of new and worthwhile treatments for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia drugs, Chinese Medicine, diet, exercise, and other. It will also let you know as I add new features to this Websites. Please sign up for it today here Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) - the name it has been known by in the in the UK (where I am from) since the 1950’s and internationally until 1988 when it was dubbed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome by a CDC committee. (I now live in Incline Village, Nevada - the town where the “new” illness Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was "discovered" in 1984). I intend for this to work a bit like 'Stone Soup' - where we all bring our experiences - rather than rutabagas - to the mix. So please send me a note about what has worked for you to alleviate your suffering - I will share it with the mailing list. Like everyone with CFS/ME I have a story and like most other people I have met with this illness the whole story is pretty long! Here is the short version:

Oh dear diary I have neglected you! In all honesty I've spend time away from the computer - and - even sleepydust.net! Gasp! Anyway, I got a query today about CFS and exercise and thought it was an interesting topic. Here it is: My friend says anyone with M.E. is not supposed to exercise. What would you say to that? And my answer: That's a tricky one - it depends on the person and the stage of your condition (if you have had it for less than 6 months then it seems that most professionals advise against it). Gentle 'graded exercise' is advised by some professionals but they warn that there are a small percentage of people who do not respond well to exercise and actually get worse. In my opinion it depends on the person. For example, I tend to get worse with exercise - but when I am going through a good patch (rare but good patches do occur!) I try and go out - even if it's for two minutes and for a few paces. In bad patches, I stay inside - any physical exertion makes me worse - and that is the general case in the reported symptoms of M.E. - delayed onset of symptoms after some type of physical exertion.

IMPORTANT NEW ME/CFS QUESTIONNAIRE An important new ME/CFS symptom questionnaire has been developed by Ricky Buchanan, author of the very well known " Letter To Normals "l which has been published in CFS/ME newsletters and books all over the world. Ricky herself has had severe CFS for over a decade. Why a new questionnaire at all? After years of contact with the CFS/ME community Ricky has noticed a small percentage of people with CFS/ME have very severe symptoms. Much worse than the "usual" case of CFS/ME would expect. It is these people Ricky would like to study - the people who are bedridden for years and years and years, who cannot leave the house, who need wheelchairs to get from one room to another, and so forth. This questionnaire, known as the "CFS/ME Severe Symptoms Questionnaire", aims to find out what symptoms these people commonly have that people with less severe CFS don't have. Things like epilepsy, paralysis, and so on. To find out what is different about people with very severe CFS, Ricky needa to study ALL of the CFS/ME community though.

Chronic fatigue syndrome more than being tired
By Eleni Berger CNN (CNN) Imagine getting only three or four hours of sleep a night for eight years. Then having a pain as severe as a toothache throughout the entire body at the same time. Add to that the feeling that memory is fading. That's what life can be like for people who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), says Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an internist who specializes in treating this mysterious illness. "This is a serious disease that can destroy people's lives," says Teitelbaum, who directs the Annapolis Research Center for Effective Fibromyalgia and CFS Therapies in Annapolis, Maryland. He became interested in the illness after succumbing to it in medical school in 1975. "There was not even a name for it back then," recalls Teitelbaum, who says he battled the disease for years before being cured.

... I called the doctors' office immediately and a few days later went to see Dr. Koch. A young man, somewhere in his thirties, he did a complete physical examination, took the most thorough history I've ever had, and altogether spent an hour with me. His attention alone was worth the three-hundred dollars it cost. (A hell of a way to be, to be so grateful if a man listens.)

We have many requests for the physician's side symptoms list, known as "Devin's Diagnostic" This site describes two medical conditions which often occur together: Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain. Chronic Myofascial Pain was previously called Myofascial Pain Syndrome. See the handout " Myofascial Pain — A Neuromuscular Disease ". These conditions are clearly clinical disorders, and as they share symptoms with so many other disorders, are currently among the most misdiagnosed of ailments. We hope that this information will help people get more information about these illnesses so as to better their chances of accurate diagnosis and improved therapy.

Some members and outside parties have donated funds for the Governor Rudy Perpich Memorial Lectureship. I want to thank these individuals. Mrs. Perpich and I are appealing to our members to donate to this fund so that we can support the expenses of the individual selected to present this lecture.
I have provided you with an overview of what is coming in the future. The AACFS is committed to serving the membership and to providing assistance so that there can be better diagnosis of these diseases, better understanding of their pathogenesis, and better insight into the best treatments.
I encourage you to be more active by communicating with us about your ideas, problems in controlling the illness, and ideas that may shed light on this illness. I want to see that, for the upcoming 2004 International Conference, there is more attendance from the membership. I also request that you encourage your associates to join the AACFS. I wish each of you a happy holiday season. Please do not hesitate to contact the Board of Directors for any question or suggestions.
