New Jersey Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Fibromyalgia Center
At the forefront of CFS/FM research and treatment since its establishment in 1989, the New Jersey CFS/FM Center is located at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, NJ and the East Orange VA Medical Center. Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia often present with similar symptoms. A CFS patient primarily complains of fatigue, while pain is the major concern of the patient suffering from FM. Often, both fatigue and pain are present in these conditions. The New Jersey CFS/FM Center is composed of two branches
Research
and Private Care Although we are not currently recruiting CFS patients for research, patients interested in clinical evaluation should complete a health screen form Our twelve years of NIH funding for research is coming to an end July 31, 2004. Most of our research projects are completed or in the data analysis phase, but a few projects cannot be completed until we recruit more HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS . Please help us reach our goals before funding runs out! Volunteers will be compensated for their time. In the meantime, we are busy seeking funding for several new projects that we hope to do in the near future.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the Alexander Technique by Martin Finnegan What exactly is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?* Sometimes referred to as ME or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, it is a term that describes a chronic, debilitating disorder that affects the immune and central nervous system. Typical of its symptoms are a profound fatigue, totally out of proportion to a person's physical activity and independent of mood, plus a range of other symptoms that can affect any organ of the body. The causes of CFS are unknown. Indeed there appear to be any number of apparent causes and in many cases the onset seems to be linked to a stress to the immune system such as an acute infection, especially viral in nature. After the stress or virus has run its course the symptoms do not abate as you would expect but set in, becoming chronic and are often associated with profound fatigue and feelings of general malaise. Western medicine advocates rest, counseling, adjusting lifestyle and support as the best approach to treating CFS and this is all good advice. The problem, it seems to me is one of perception. The orthodox point of view perceives CFS as a thing. It is my opinion that CFS is not a thing at all, which is the reason that no cause and no diagnosis can be found. It is a process. A process of a human system running down, in a variety of ways, to such a point that it can't function properly anymore. In my own experience of CFS, it was exactly that and the solution was not to attempt to 'fix' a part of my body but to address the whole of 'me' and my life, in all its various aspects - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. And the new model that I followed worked.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (M.E.)
Introduction The Clinical Picture The Cause Diagnostics ... Treatment
Introduction
Chronic fatigue syndrome, often better known as M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis) and postviral syndrome, seems to be a mysterious disease which has been running rampant over the past decade. To variable degrees, a growing number of people suffer from this syndrome, for which no clear- cut cause has yet been found. Sufferers appear healthy and frequently have normal blood test results. This regularly leads general practitioners, consultants, occupational physicians, employers and society in general, to deny the existence of this syndrome. Unrequired referrals to psychiatrists and psychologists; the use of hypnotics, tranquillisers and antidepressants; an inability to cope with daily life in general, and work in particular; are only some of the unpleasant consequences of this malady.
The Clinical Picture
Diagnosing chronic fatigue (or M.E.). is done based on the patient's complaint pattern and history. In order to diagnose the syndrome, other causes of chronic fatigue, such as anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, certain infections, autoimmune disease, multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis, etc. need to be excluded. The most commonly found complaints are:
  • severe fatigue (more than 50% energy loss) for a minimum of 6 months, often with slow recovery after exertion; sometimes "good" periods;

You probably know that taking drugs to suppress your symptoms is a dead-end road.
The questions you have to ask yourself are these: Have I been suffering long enough? Have I 'learned' what I needed to learn from illness?
If you're 'fed-up' with taking drugs that only mask the symptoms of your problem? If so, you're in the right place
At our clinic in Laguna Niguel, California, we understand one thing: how to get sick people well. And we've had success with many different conditions, from all over the United States and Canada.
Through a comprehensive method of body balancing, health can be restored. We don't "treat disease" at our clinic. Instead, we cleanse, nourish and balance the body, and the power that created the body can then heal the body.
Taking a look at any of the presentations below is a good way to begin your journey to getting well again. If you have problems getting any presentation to display

Alpha Nutrition The Problem: The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is characterized by persistent and debilitating fatigue and additional nonspecific symptoms such as sore throat, headache, tender muscles, joint pains, difficulty thinking and loss of short term memory. CFS and related disorders are not discrete diseases in the usual sense, but patterns of maladaptive responses to food and the environment. Controversy and confusion has surrounded CFS for several decades and many physicians continue to be reluctant to make this diagnosis. We believe that chronic fatigue syndrome is one example of non-specific hypersensitivity disease and should be treated with diet revision as the first and most essential form of therapy. Our theory of delayed or type 3 pattern food allergy explains all the features of CFS and locates the disease in the middle of a larger pool of hypersensitivity disorders. CFS is a non-specific expression of immune-mediated disease. The Solution

INTRODUCTION Do not rely solely on this discussion of nutrients and strategies, but seek other medical consultation if you are sick as well. “Chronic fatigue syndrome” (CFS or CFIDS) or “myalgic encephalomyelitis" (ME) is a disease characterized by several of the symptoms of impaired sleep, muscle twitching at night, extreme long lasting fatigue which gets much worse with exercise (the fatigue has been suggested to be from creation of proteins which interfere with and/or destroy thyroid hormone receptors by interferon [Englebienne] ), loss of memory [Marcel], disruption of the circadian rhythm [Tomoda], sore throat, muscle and joint aches, headache ( see abstracts of research into magnesium related to migraines or also for an article relating magnesium deficiency to migraine headache) , cough, photophobia, night sweats [Evengard] depression that has much lower ACTH and cortisol secretion than typical depression [Demitrack], also a much lower secretion of growth hormone which Cheney believes can be used to repair some of the damage to the hypothalamus of the brain (but growth hormone is degraded when eaten so can not be used by patients) and which failure is thought to be from over secretion of somatostatin in the hypothalamus [Paiva], a failure for a 383 amino acid cortisol binding protein to decline under stress as it usually does when not ill, lower secretion of DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone ) [Kuratsune] which is the most abundant circulating steroid [No authors], there is a less rise of DHEA under ACTH stimulation compared to cortisol than normal [Scott 2000] (You may see how some

Provides help and advice on how to recover from CFS based on the author's personal experience.
http://www.planetexpress.demon.co.uk/recovery/
Recovering from Chronic Fatigue A list of things you can do to aid your recovery Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(CFS) usually occurs after an infection such a flu. People with CFS feel physically exhausted. In the early stage of the illness, CFS sufferers often feel the need to sleep all the time, although the sleep they have does not refresh them. Mental exhaustion is common, affecting the person's ability to concentrate or remember. Some may experience a temperature, tender glands, muscle pain or a sore throat. At present there is no cure for CFS. However, the good news is that it is possible to get better. I have had Chronic Fatigue since February 1999. At first I was sleeping 12 hours a night and couldn't manage to stay up during the day for more than 2 hours at a time. Even a 5 minute walk was tiring. I recently started my own small business, Clyde Photography , which sells travel photographs. This allows me to work at my own pace. I also recently started working part-time three half-days a week. I am not fully recovered yet, but having had CFS for this length of time I have learned(sometimes the hard way) what will help me and what will set me back. I know I will make a full recovery in time, providing I stick to a few basic rules which I have learned throughout this past year or so.
