Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
January, 2003 Download this factsheet Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition that causes fatigue severe enough to interfere with a person’s normal life. It is the term used to describe the symptoms formerly known as ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis).
    About chronic fatigue syndrome
In the past, doctors tended to believe that chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was related to depression and that the symptoms were "all in the mind". But most experts now agree that chronic fatigue syndrome is a distinct disease with physical symptoms. Although poorly understood, CFS is real and can be disabling for many people who have it. It can affect any age group including school children and the elderly, but it most commonly affects young adults. About 1 in 1000 people are affected in the UK.

    Diagnosing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
No blood test or imaging scan can diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The only way doctors can tell is by ruling out other illnesses that can cause CFS-like symptoms. If none are found, or if chronic fatigue persists after an underlying problem is treated successfully, then CFS may be diagnosed. Criteria According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a diagnosis of CFS should be made according to the following criteria:
    • The patient has been evaluated by a health care provider and has unexplained persistent or relapsing chronic fatigue that is of new or definite onset (e.g., not lifelong). The chronic fatigue is not caused by ongoing exertion, rest does not help the person feel better and the fatigue severely interferes with quality of life.
Symptoms In addition to chronic fatigue, the patient also suffers from four or more of the following symptoms:
  • Substantial impairment of short-term memory or concentration Sore throat Tender lymph nodes Muscle pain Multi-joint pain without swelling or redness Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity

    STATEMENT ON CFIDS
    Robert F. Cathcart, M. D.
In retrospect, I saw the first patients with CFIDS in Incline Village about 1978. The epidemic officially started sometime in 1983 in Incline Village. I left Incline Village January 1, 1980 but continued to treat patients for chronic fatigue. My treatment was mainly with massive doses of vitamin C but it also included many other nutrients. The rationale has been that CFIDS is a free radical disease involving damaged mitochondria. My suspicion that chronic fatigue was a free radical disease involving mitochondria was because of the beneficial effect of massive doses of vitamin C. I was using the massive doses of vitamin C not for the vitamin C but for the electrons carried by the vitamin C. Ordinarily, when a vitamin C molecule gives up its two extra electrons to scavenge two free radicals, the vitamin C is refueled with two more electrons from the mitochondria. When the mitochondria are damaged and cannot provide the electrons then the spent vitamin C is rapidly irreversibly lost. By giving massive doses of C, this loss is prevented, and the continuing supply of

"Healing Resources For Patients, Family and Friends"
The book provides extensive resources for learning how to accept and understand these chronic illnesses, paves the way to access information easily, to give some sanity to the madness, and to educate family and friends on every aspect of these syndromes. "A comparative analysis in the Journal of Rheumatology found that the quality of life for women with FM is worse than for those who have Rheumatoid Arthritis." Fibromyalgia, unlike well known and understood diseases like cancer, springboards a journey for education, understanding and compassion. Written by a fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue patient, the book provides unlimited resources for patients and family to understand, learn, cope and find support through their walk in accepting and surviving these invisible illnesses. The Life Planner, is a workbook that maps out a step-by-step plan for adapting and coping with the lifestyle changes fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue patients must face.
The book provides extensive resources for: Patients, family and friends, to understand what these syndromes are, where the resources are that will carry you through the journey toward emotional healing, and where our hope is for finding a cure. The Book is divided into four sections:

    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
    What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
We all get tired. Many of us at times have felt depressed. But the mystery known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is not like the normal ups and downs we experience in everyday life. The early sign of this illness is a strong and noticeable fatigue that comes on suddenly and often comes and goes or never stops. You feel too tired to do normal activities or are easily exhausted with no apparent reason. Unlike the mind fog of a serious hangover, to which researchers have compared CFS, the profound weakness of CFS does not go away with a few good nights of sleep. Instead, it slyly steals your energy and vigor over months and sometimes years.
How CFS Begins and Its Symptoms
For many people, CFS begins after a bout with a cold, bronchitis, hepatitis, or an intestinal bug. For some, it follows a bout of infectious mononucleosis, or mono, which temporarily saps the energy of many teenagers and young adults. Often, people say that their illnesses started during a period of high stress. In others, CFS develops more gradually, with no clear illness or other event starting it. Unlike flu symptoms, which usually go away in a few days or weeks, CFS symptoms either hang on or come and go frequently for more than six months. CFS symptoms include:

I wish to personally welcome you to this web site. It has been created, with love, for you. When we first get diagnosed (or wonder if we should be diagnosed), I know too well how difficult it is to find information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka CFIDS, M.E.), Lyme, and/or Fibromyalgia Syndrome. There are a myriad of sites that bring you the basics, and I try to present you those basics as well as information slightly beyond. At the moment, there is no cause nor cure. There are no magic bullets. This disease is so complex, no one drug will work. This is not a disease of just your muscles, your immune system, your sleep dysfunction, your hormones, your nutritional deficiencies, your NMH, or your gut; it is a cluster of symptoms that involve every system of your body. Treating it, therefore, involves testing and treating those deficiencies. The controversies surrounding that and the differences in our health contribute to our stress. My new job is to help us sort that all out. Hugs, Marilyn K
