WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME?
General Theories for Chronic Fatigue Causes
Theories abound about the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. Many physicians still doubt that CFS is an actual disease but believe rather that it is a component of a psychological disorder or a symptom of other problems, similar to anemia and high blood pressure. Indeed, no primary cause has been found that explains all cases of CFS. And, there are no consistent biologic factors that would allow objective measures, such as blood tests or brain scans, to definitively diagnose CFS.
Convergence of Factors. A number of experts believe that CFS develops from a convergence of conditions that may include the following:
  • Genetic factors.
    Brain abnormalities.
    A hyper-reactive immune system.
    Viral or other infectious agents.
    Psychiatric or emotional conditions.
For example, the majority of patients report some preceding moderate to serious physical illness (e.g., a chronic viral infection) or emotional event (e.g., episode of depression). Some experts theorize that such events, alone or in combination, may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger the event. Still, it is not clear what sequence of events actually leads to the fatigue and other prominent symptoms of this disorder. Nor is there any specific brain or nervous system abnormality that experts can point to with assurance. Research published in 2001 indicates that CFS is more common among identical twins (who share the same genes) than fraternal twins (who share only some genes). Inheritance, then, may play a role in roughly 30% to 50% of cases, similar to the influence thought to occur in depression or alcoholism, although specific genes have not yet been identified.

from Dr. Poesnecker I realize that many, if not most of you have been told there is no effective treatment for your condition. That you must just "learn to live with it." Our experience has demonstrated otherwise. The underlying causes of these conditions are known and so also are effective treatments. While we have no magic cure, with the cooperation of the individual, we have been able to return thousands of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFIDS and Fibromyalgia patients to active productive lives by the methods we have developed and taught over the last forty-five years. We can also help you if you are ready to start living once again. Below you will find links to many articles describing the methods we use to help individuals successfully overcome these devastating and humiliating conditions. Once you have had an opportunity to puruse these, the next step on your road to recovery is to take an Adrenal Stress Index test (ASI) from DiagnosTech labs of Seattle, Washington. We have tried many other labs, but this is the only one whose results have been really useful in helping our patients. Concurrent with taking the ASI test you should be studying

You are in: Immune System Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Overview Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a poorly understood condition in which chronic fatigue (tiredness) is the main symptom. This fatigue makes it difficult for you to function. In addition to tiredness, you may also have many symptoms that do not fall into a particular category (called nonspecific symptoms) and that may or may not have a psychiatric or neurologic basis. A set of criteria to help a doctor diagnose CFS was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If your tiredness continues for over 6 months and makes it difficult to function, but you do not meet the criteria for CFS, your condition is called idiopathic chronic fatigue. Chronic fatigue is a common complaint. Some 20% of people who go to a doctor have chronic tiredness. But the number of people who meet the criteria for CFS is about 2-7.3 per 100,000.

The practice was set-up in 1998 in order to offer Southport residents a centrally located osteopathic consulting room. The surgery moved to 25 Duke Street in February 2002 and for the moment has eight steps to the front door, so there is not access for disabled patients. There is also off-road parking for two cars. I enjoy treating patients and all aspects of my work. I specialise in the osteopathic treatment of "ME" or chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as dealing with the musculo-skeletal problems one sees in osteopathic practice, such as low back injuries, neck strains and degenerative conditions.
Surgery Hours:- Monday Wednesday Friday
About Kay Barker: -
I qualified in 1996 from the British School of Osteopathy in London. For two years after graduating I practised as a locum to gain insight into different practice life and eventually decide on where I would settle down. I worked everywhere North of Watford! Then in Southern Spain before deciding to return to Southport, where I was brought up, in order to practise from here. Working as a locum gave me the experience which I felt I needed to set up my own business and decide upon exactly how I wanted to run my own practice. I also work in a group practice at Perrin Hayward Osteopaths, 83 Whittaker Lane, Prestwich. Manchester. This means that I can talk to colleagues and discuss cases, as well as treat a wider cross-section of people.

Chronic fatigue syndrome Note: This draft has been superseded by the Revised guidelines published as a supplement to The Medical Journal of Australia on 6 May 2002. Here is the first draft Clinical Practice Guidelines on the evaluation of prolonged fatigue and the diagnosis and management of chronic fatigue syndrome Produced by a Working Group convened by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians This document was produced as an exposure draft by a Working Group seeking constructive criticism from doctors and other health professionals, learned professional bodies, people with CFS and their carers, and any others with an interest in this condition. The Working Group received a great deal of feedback from health professionals and people with CFS, but did not produce another draft of the guidelines. Because many readers who commented on the draft have found it useful, the MJA will continue to make it available here. Version 1

A PDF version of this document is available. Download PDF now (8 pages /86 KB). More information on using PDF files. C hronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also referred to as chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome, is a disabling illness characterized by persistent fatigue accompanied by rheumatologic, cognitive, and infectious-appearing symptoms. Despite intense medical research, there is no known cause for CFS, but it appears to be a heterogeneous disorder which affects multiple systems, including hormonal, neurologic, and immunologic. Because there are no specific diagnostic tests or physical findings for CFS, diagnosis requires knowledge of possible symptoms and a method of exclusion. CFS is likely a spectrum of illnesses sharing a common pathogenesis with varying degrees of fatigue and associated symptoms. Other disorders, such as fibromyalgia, have overlapping symptoms with CFS, suggesting that both diseases may share common physiologic abnormalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's criteria for diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome require the patient to present with severe fatigue lasting at least six consecutive months, have no definable organic disease, and experience associated physical symptoms.

Cranton, M.D. Mount Rogers Clinic, Trout Dale, Virginia Mount Rainier Clinic, Yelm, Washington INTRODUCTION A wide variety of symptoms, as listed above, of a seemingly unrelated nature affect widely diverse parts of the body and are postulated in this paper to be caused, at least in part, by overload of the immune system and immunologic dysfunction. Chronic fatigue and nervous tension are almost always present.
