Teach The Children Just last Monday night Jeremy had a strange visitor. This is how it happened. He was about to go to bed when he heard a noise in the front of the house. He opened the door of the front room, and to his surprise, Santa Claus himself was stepping out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his fingers over his lips so Jeremy wouldn't cry out. "What are you doing here..." he started to ask, but the words choked up in his throat as he saw that Santa had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. As I stood there bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the Children." (slight pause)... Jeremy was perplexed. "Teach them the old meaning of Christmas the meanings that Christmas nowadays has forgotten." Santa pulled a star from his bag. Teach the children the star was a heavenly sign of promise. God promised a Savior for the world and a sign of the fulfillment of that promise was the great star of the East. The star now reminds us of God's love for mankind and of God fulfilling His promise. The countless shining stars at night one for each man now show the burning hope of all mankind." Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and drew forth from the bag a glittering red Christmas ornament. "Teach the Children, red is the first color of Christmas. The faithful people to remind them of the blood, which was shed for all people by the Savior, first used it. Christ gave his life and shed his blood that every man might have God's gift to all, eternal life. Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the greatest color of all. It is the symbol of the gift of God." Santa pulled another object from his bag. It was a small Christmas tree.

Scientists Teach an Old Christmas Plant New Tricks
    By Jill Lee
December 22, 1997 Ardesia shrub as the holiday showpiece. Some nurseries sell Ardesia U.S. National Arboretum Agricultural Research Service The new plant is tiny, growing only about 6 inches tall, but with more than 200 cherry-shaped berries that pop out all over in snow-white or hot, bright red. The plant has natural resistance to whiteflies and other pests. Researchers with the ARS Floral and Nursery Plant Research Unit traveled to Japan, Korea and China, where Ardesia species are common. They brought back plants such as Ardesia crenata, which has white or red berries with variegated leaves. Getting Ardesia to put on a festive face can be tricky, say the researchers. It tends to sprout berries only on its bottom branches. The researchers are developing trimming techniques to make sure the holiday mini-version of this plant wears a red or white crown and has berries on the bottom, too. Another challenge: Ardesia takes two years to go from a seed to marketable plant. Cuttings reduce this time by half, but researchers are seeking the optimum time to take cuttings. They want rooting success to be 100 percenta key to putting the plant on the specialty nursery market.

He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten." Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."

    it’s a great Christmas gift
Four tips can assist parents in explaining the importance of philanthropy to children during the holidays
It’s easy for people to get caught up in the retail rush and marketing madness of the holiday season. Parking lots fill up and checkout lines wrap through department store aisles. Children make gift wish lists and their parents scramble to purchase toys before they disappear from the shelves. Considering all the yuletide lunacy, sidestepping Santa and his ringing bell on the corner or overlooking the toy drive box can become second nature. And for kids, these charitable opportunities can slip by completely unnoticed unless their parents explain the importance of philanthropy and include them in the giving process. Here are a few tips that can make holiday charity more fun than anything else on your family’s "to do" list:

a talk by Jon Schaff, a man about town The best thing about the coming of Thanksgiving for me, besides the in take of gravy that you get on Thanksgiving, is that after Thanksgiving you get to listen to Christmas music with impunity. I confess to listening to Christmas music 12 months of the year, but for the next four weeks I can listen to it without getting strange looks from people. Now in the glorious new age of internet music piracy I have made myself two awesome all purpose Christmas music CDs. I have one of secular songs, like White Christmas and Rudolph and all that. I have another one with religious songs, my favorite song being the one I just listened to. I am pretty old school when it comes to, well, just about everything, but especially when it comes to Christmas music. No NSYNCH dancin’ Christmas for me, although I will say that Jewel’s Christmas album from a couple years ago has some spectacular cuts which have made their way onto my all purpose religious Christmas CD. But I generally prefer the old standbys: Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Perry Como.

If you don't practice charity in your daily life, you may be tempted to lecture them about giving to the poor, with the caveat: "do as I say, not as I do." Unfortunately, children are more likely to follow "monkey see, monkey do." If you want your kids to grow up to be charitable adults, you have to teach it to them now through your own actions. Here are five ways to teach your children about volunteering and giving the gift of themselves during the holidays.

    The theology of Santa
Santa, as taught to most children, has most of the attributes of God: He is virtually omnipresent . He can visit hundreds of millions of homes in one night. He is omniscient . He monitors each child; he is all-seeing and all-knowing; he knows when they are bad and good. Although not omnipotent, he does have great powers. He can manufacture gifts for hundreds of millions of children, and deliver them in one night each to the correct child. He is all-good and all-just . He judges which children have shown good behavior and rewards them appropriately. Bad children are bypassed or receive a lump of coal. He is eternal He rewards good and punishes bad behavior. However, there are negative aspects to Santa's behavior that can damage a child's self-esteem: In practice, children are not rewarded with gifts according to their behavior; they receive presents according to the amount of money that their parents are willing or able to spend on them at Christmas time. A child may receive little or nothing from Santa because his/her parents are poor. Unfortunately, the child has probably adsorbed from the media and their friends only bad children get nothing from Santa. He/she might begin to look upon themselves as a bad person. This may well damage their self esteem.

    1. "Puer natus est nobis, filius datus est nobis" ( Is 9:5 These words of the prophet Isaiah resound every year during the Mass on Christmas night. Isaiah is said to be almost an evangelist of the Old Testament. His soul's inspired gaze penetrates across the centuries, glimpsing future events and enabling us to contemplate them in the light of God. "Puer natus est nobis"! We will be the witnesses of precisely this, the day after tomorrow at midnight, at the solemn Eucharistic celebration that marks the extraordinary liturgy of the Lord's birth. We will listen to the reading from St. Luke's Gospel, which describes this event in detail, and then, during the Mass "at dawn" and the Mass during "the day", our eyes will open ever wider to the light that comes to us from the Prologue of John's Gospel. "Filius datus est nobis"!

For years she did not think she could teach her students religious Christmas carols. Instead, she taught them "Jingle Bells" and "Frosty the Snowman." She then learned that the law allowed her to teach the children traditional carols. As she started a lesson on Christmas carols, she explained to the children that they were going to learn some songs about Jesus Christ. Some of her students gasped in disbelief. When she asked them why they were so shocked, they explained that they thought she was swearing. To her surprise, the teacher realized these children didn't even know that Jesus was a real person. They only thought it was a name used for cursing!
