The Happiest Elf

by Jimmy Patterson
One day this past October, just when the air was turning crisp and the leaves on the trees were changing into bright shades of yellow and red and gold, Jovy the Elf walked into Santa's office. "Boss," Jovy said. "I am tired." "Well," said Santa, "take a couple of hours and get some rest. Take a nap. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow and " Just then, Santa looked up and saw Jovy shaking his head and wiping away a tear from right in the very corner of his eye. Santa Claus knew then that Jovy meant he wasn't tired just because he hadn't slept well the night before. Santa knew that Jovy was getting old. He had told Santa once before that he would soon like to start spending more time at home with his wife Rebecca. "It will make me sad when you leave your job," Santa told Jovy. "You have always been my hardest-working elf. You have always been an elf that I am proud to have my other workers look up to. Nobody has been with me on as many Christmas Eve sleigh rides. I will miss you, Jovy, but you deserve happiness all the days of your life, and if it is staying at home with your Rebecca that makes you happy, then so be it."

THE SECRET OF THE GREEK DOOR
A Christmas Story
by
Benjamin B. Wallace

December 19, 2003 Daniel B. Wallace
Chapter One
The Surprising News By the summer of 1886 he started to steal in order to feed his belly. At first it was little things: a loaf of bread here, an apple there. But his face became too familiar to the workers on Market Street and its environs and he was forced to become innovative. After a couple years of trickery and deception, he hit upon the Salvation Army disguise. In the winter of 1888 Charlie pulled out that old black overcoat and the brown boots he had stolen from Huffman Clothing, dyed them the appropriate Christmas colors, and peddled himself off as Santa Claus. His by-now naturally white hair and beard, coupled with a belly constantly full of cheap wine, gave Charlie a realistic look of the old Saint. There was a copy of the will inside (conveniently translated into English), a first-class ticket for a ship, two train tickets, and $500 in cash.
Chapter Two
The Secret Message that As he waddled up the five flights of stairs, Charlie began to ponder for the first time what good fortune had come his way. He was rich beyond his wildest dreams! He had servants, a gigantic castle, food and clothing to last several lifetimes. He fell asleep that night happy and content.

This year the event will be held on December 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th at the Tretheway Pavilion in the Spearfish City Park. The public is invited to enjoy refreshments and musical entertainment while viewing the trees and wreaths so beautifully decorated by local businesses, organizations, and individuals. Activities will include tours by school children, an assisted living-senior tea, and a silent auction of dolls dressed by local individuals. The highlight of The Festival of Trees will come on the evening of December 4th, a Thursday. At 7 p.m. a live auction of the trees and wreaths will take place. Zonta sponsors The Festival of Trees to support the needs of women and children in the community through organizations such as the Artemus House, CASA, and Foster Parents.

The scent of a pine wreath beautifully hung with red ribbon from a pine stand with a star at the top...
Every year my father gathered fragrant pine boughs and formed them into a glorious, large round wreath. As was the tradition, it hung by red ribbons from a pine stand with a star in the center.
My favorite traditional Christmas music filled the air while the fire burned in the distance. Angelic choir voices, the deep baritone of Jonny Mathis, tradional German Christmas songs, American favorite Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer... added to the magical times. Every Sunday evening, the family gathered together around the table with the wreath. Each Sunday before Christmas one of the four candles would be lit.

Christmas is only weeks away and Catherine wants to help decorate the trees in her yard. As she helps her father with the lights, she sees two young deer eating from her bird feeder. When her father explains that the snow is too deep for the deer to find food on their own, Catherine asks if they can feed the young animals. All is well until noise from snowmobiles frighten the deer away. Will they find their way back to Catherine's yard? Can Catherine protect the deer from the snowmobiles?

The Four Candles burned slowly.
Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak...
The first candle said, "I Am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me lit."
The second candle said, "I Am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable."
Sadly the third candle spoke, "I Am Love and I haven't the strength to stay lit any longer."
"People put me aside and don't understand my importance.
They even forget to love those who are nearest to them."
And waiting no longer, Love went out completely.
Suddenly...
A child entered the room and saw the three candles no longer burning.
The child began to cry, "Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit until the end." Then the Fourth Candle spoke gently to the little boy, "Don't be afraid, for I Am Hope, and while I still burn, we can re-light the other candles." With shining eyes, the child took the Candle of Hope and lit the other three candles. Never let the Flame of Hope go out. With Hope in your life, no matter how bad things may be

CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD
From Stormie:

During our "Christmas" unit, we can connect children to the rest of the world by sharing (on their level) how this joyous of holidays is celebrated by other countries and cultures. It can be as simple as giving them an informational tidbit during Group Time or as involved as a Special Project. The important thing is that we're making that multi-cultural connection. To provide a frame of reference, show children where a particular country is located on your classroom globe, and if possible, provide related pictures and books. (I feel it's just as important, however, to mention to the children that not everyone in the world celebrates Christmas.) Alaska (U.S.):

O.K., Christians of the world: Church history for one hundred. When is the Feast of Stephen and to whom does it refer? (Pause for hemming and hawing.) It's December 26, the day after Christmas, when the death of the church's first martyr, Stephen, is traditionally commemorated. Trivial, yes, but most Christians can't give me the correct answer. My preoccupation with this began a year ago, when I found myself sitting in an evangelical church in early December listening to the singing of Christmas carols. "Could the church have lost its mind?" I thought. It has become so much like the world.

Advent in Innsbruck and its holiday villages Christkindl markets, ancient Tyrolean customs, Christmas concerts and events for Advent are a distinctive part of the pre-Christmas period in Innsbruck and its holiday villages. THE INNSBRUCK CHRISTKINDL MARKET There may be Christmas markets in the world that are more famous than the one held every year in Innsbruck, but none of them take place against such a spectacular backdrop. In the picturesque, medieval old town with its arcades and old houses and beneath the world famous Golden Roof you will find a "Christkindl" market typical of the alpine countries and whose origins go back many years. The large, illuminated Christmas tree, a carved crib with life-sized figures and countless stalls decked out with Christmas decorations will put you in the right mood for Christmas and let you forget the day-to-day routine. Majestic, snow-covered mountains overlook the Christkindl market on the Landhausplatz. Fresh gingerbread cake, Christmas stalls, burnt almonds, mulled wine and chestnuts, Tyrolean "Kiachl" and doughnuts giving off an irresistible aroma and recalling memories of childhood. There's so much to see: sparkling Christmas tree decorations, locally-made wood and glass crafts, artistically decorated candles, Tyrolean traditional loden costumes… A colourful and glittering world of bright Christmas lights and festively decorated shop windows create the perfect atmosphere for shopping and strolling.

Island Christmas
A Wartime Christmas
by Pat Strowbridge
(reprinted from Voice for Island Seniors , with permission)
I WAS JUST A child in England when World War II broke out. As a safety precaution I, along with my brother and sister, were evacuated to the Isle of Wight as Portsmouth, our hometown, was a prime target for the Luftwaffe as it had a large dockyard. My older sister was billeted with one family and my brother and I were billeted with Auntie Maud who treated us kindly. Like any child, Christmas for me was exciting and a visit from Mum, who was in the Wrens at the time, was always great. She would visit us about once a month if the Channel was safe from drifting mines. Close to Christmas she would arrive with bags full to the brim. I don't know how Mum did it, but on Christmas Day we would receive "Rupert books" (a story book about an engaging little bear), colouring books and the odd toy. Her greatest gift to us though was a real Christmas pudding. She would save sugar and raisins for months - even dabbling in the black market; and when we were served a portion on Christmas Day, we would usually find a six-pence buried in it. What a treat! As soon as Auntie Maud saw Mum walking up the path, Ernie and I were sent out to play whilst the two ladies closed the drapes in the front room to stop anxious children from peaking in and the front room was off limits to us.

songs section You can substitute other songs for the ones I've suggested. You can have one child recite each verse of the poem or you can have one person read the whole thing while the children sing. My thought was to have 3 groups of children each sing a different song, dressed in different costumes. Then have all of the children join together to sing the final song. I've added a second song suggestion, in red in case you have more than three groups of singers.

And Mary was His mom,
