    THE OLD LAMP LIGHTER
A long time ago, in a land far across the ocean, there lived an old man whose name was Alfonso.
Alfonso lived in a small house, at the end of a small street, in a small town called Villa Macaroni.
He lived all alone in the little house, except for a mouse named Minerva!
Minerva was very old also, and very wise, and very friendly, and she and Alfonso had long talks together. Yes, she could talk, but she had a tiny squeaky voice, and you had to listen very hard to hear her. Alfonso was the towns lamp lighter.
Every evening, just before it got dark, he had to take his ladder, and his matches, and his lamp oil, and light every street lamp in Villa Macaroni.
It was a very important job, because if he didn't get the lamps lit, then all the people would not know which way to walk, and the horses would pull their buggys down the wrong streets.
It would be very dark! One day, when the sun was just starting to set behind the mountain, Alfonso began to get ready for work.
He put his ladder by the door, put his matches in his pocket, and went to the big barrel in the corner to fill his bucket with lamp oil.
But when he looked in the barrel what do you think he saw?

Written December, 2000 by Patrick H. Bellringer In the Lighted Realms long ago, four great Masters surveyed the many celestial planets of the cosmos, and were dismayed at the ever-increasing darkness of one planet called Earth Shan. They agreed that together they would try again to bring Light into the darkness of Shan. So a contract was written and signed, under the supervision of the Rainbow Masters and with the blessing of God Aton of Light. In the proper sequence of cosmic events a baby Sumarian girl was born according to Lighted contract. She was birthed into a family in the country of Galilee, and lived her childhood there with her Judean family. In her growth to womanhood she became educated in the four great virtues of wisdom, bravery, fortitude, and generosity. She was highly respected for her beauty and love and wisdom. The Judeans were peasant people as were all their surrounding small neighbor nations. At one time they had been conquered by

Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means
and then never had enough for the necessities. But for those who were genuinely
in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned
the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving.
It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world
had caved in on me because there just hadn't been enough money to buy me the
rifle that I'd wanted so bad that year for Christmas. We did the chores early
that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we
could read in the Bible. So after supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the old Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn't in much of a mood to read scriptures. But Pa didn't get the Bible, instead he bundled up and went outside. I couldn't figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn't

Dickens, Charles A Christmas Carol
On-Line Text Genre Novella (76 pp.) Keywords Aging Children Death and Dying Disability ... Time Summary Four ghosts visit the miserly businessman Ebeneezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve. After the apparition of Scrooge's dead business partner Marley, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas As Yet To Come guide Scrooge through his own emotionally charged past, his harsh and loveless present, and his bleak future. The vision of his own headstone and the realization that no one will mourn his death force Scrooge to see the error of his "Bah! Humbug!" attitude toward humanity in general and Christmas in specific. The primary recipients of Scrooge's moral rebirth are his poor clerk Bob Cratchit and his family, especially the crippled boy Tiny Tim. When Scrooge wakes from his ghostly visitations, he delivers a huge turkey to the Cratchit household and gives Bob a raise. He becomes a "second father" to Tim and reconciles with his own nephew.

Christmas celebrations
around the world
It is interesting to see how different countries celebrate Christmas. We asked some of our friends to explain what happens in their countries. This is what they told us:
Belgium
Small family presents are given at Christmas too, under the tree, or in stockings near the fire-place, to be found in the morning. Christmas breakfast is a special sweet bread called 'cougnou' or 'cougnolle' - the shape is supposed to be like baby Jesus. Some families will have another big meal on Christmas day.
Brazil
Father Christmas is called Papai Noel. Many Christmas customs are similar to USA or UK. For those who have enough money, a special Christmas meal will be chicken, turkey, ham, rice, salad, pork, fresh and dried fruits, often with beer. Poorer people will just have chicken and rice.
Finland
Finnish people believe that Father Christmas (Santa Claus) lives in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturi, north of the Arctic Circle. People from all over the world send letters to Santa Claus in Finland. (It is only fair to say that the people of Greenland say that really, Father Christmas lives in Greenland!) There is a even big tourist theme park called 'Christmas Land' in the north of Finland, near to where they say that Father Christmas lives. Everyone cleans their houses ready for the three holy days of Christmas - Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Christmas Eve is very special, when people eat rice porridge and plum fruit juice in the morning. They will then decorate a spruce tree in the home. At mid-day, the 'peace of Christmas' is broadcast on radio and TV from the Finnish city of Turku by its Mayor. In the evening, a traditional Christmas dinner is eaten. The meal will include 'casseroles' containg macaroni, rutabaga, carrot and potato, with cooked ham or turkey. Many families will visit cemeteries and grave-yards to place a candle onto the burial graves of family members. Cemeteries are very beautiful at Christmas-time.

The Second Greatest Christmas Story Ever Told BY THOMAS J. BURNS
(Originally published in Reader's Digest , December 1989) From its first publication, "A Christmas Carol" has charmed and inspired millions. There have been scores of editions and translations, and many stage, TV and film adaptations, making it one of the best-loved stories of all time. Less well known is the fact that this little book of celebration grew out of a dark period in the author's career and, in some ways, changed the course of his life forever. On an early October evening in 1843, Charles Dickens stepped from the brick-and-stone portico of his home near Regent's Park in London. The cool air of dusk was a relief from the day's unseasonal humidity, as the author began his nightly walk through what he called "the black streets" of the city.

They didn't want Alfred to join them so they made him go outside. Alfred cried and cried. He got so sad and angry that he ran away. He ran for one hour. Alfred was lost. He was also sad. He tried to go home but he was lost. There was no hope for Alfred. He sat and cried. Alfred cried for almost half an hour. Then he saw something in the sky. He had no idea what it was. It was Santa! He waved Santa down and asked him for one thing, to be popular at the barn and if he could ride home to the barn with him. Santa said okay. When they got to the barn, all of the cows ran to them and asked him if they could be Alfred's friend. Alfred was happy that all of the cows wanted to be his friend. What is the origin of Christmas?
Where and when was Christmas first celebrated, and when did the legend of St. Nicholas first arise? Traditions and origins of the December holiday celebrated around the world.
On the Christian calendar, Christmas is considered to be one of the holiest and most sacred days of the year. The evangelist Luke, in his New Testament epistle, gives the account of the miraculous birth of the Savior to a virgin mother. It is this testimony, followed and believed by Christians for two thousand years, that seems to have breathed life into the traditions of celebrating Christmas, or Christs mass. In Christianity, it is the birth itself that is most revered on this day, the twenty-fifth of December. Christians for ages have gathered on all corners of the Earth to celebrate a redeemer, and to gather in friendship and humility to remember the birth of the baby that is the very cornerstone of their faith. Candles are lit in churches, chapels, and other houses of worship during services throughout the month of December to celebrate and to remember. bodyOffer(28214) The book of Luke describes in more detailed ways than any other book the happenings of the holy night in Bethlehem-the foretelling to Mary of her impending motherhood, while still a virgin, and the long ride to the city for the purpose of paying taxes, and finally the birth itself. Luke also describes three kings from the east, coming to worship the babe in the manger, the only structure available to Mary and Joseph on this evening. Luke tells that these wise and wealthy kings are humbled by the birth of the one of whom theyve been foretold-humbled, and honored. They bring, Luke says, gifts to impart upon the baby as a gesture of good will and honor.

    CHRISTMAS Legends and Stories
    The Birth of Christ
King August, who ruled Palestine, wanted to know the number of people in his kingdom. For that reason, he requested the names of all the people and everyone had to return to the birthplace of his ancestors. The Most Blessed Virgin Mary and Joseph were of the family of David; therefore, they journeyed to Bethlehem, the birthplace of David.
Exhausted from the long journey, they arrived in Bethlehem at night. There was no available place to sleep at the Inns or at any of the homes as a great number of people had gone there at King's request. Having no place to sleep, Mary and Joseph went to the outskirts of Bethlehem and there found a stable where the shepherds of Bethlehem kept their cattle during stormy weather. It was here that they planned to spend the night. Around midnight, the stars in the heavens lit up the stable and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary gave birth to a male child. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the straw in the manger. The little town of Bethlehem slept peacefully, unaware of the blessed event that had taken place.
The first to hear of the birth of Christ were the shepherds of Bethlehem who were watching their sheep. An angel from heaven brought them the joyous tidings and told them to go to the town of Bethlehem where they would find the babe in a straw-filled manger. The heavens shone with a heavenly light and angles began to sing: "Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth , Peace and Good will toward Men." The shepherds hastened to the stable where they truly found Lord Jesus Christ as a babe in swaddling clothes laying in a manger of straw. They worshiped the new-born Savior, and related to the righteous Joseph and the Most Holy Mother of God what they had seen and heard from the angels in the heavens. The shepherds then left, overjoyed, glorifying and praising God.

    A CHRISTMAS STORY
There's nothing so beautiful as a child's dream of Santa Claus. I know, I often had that dream. But I was Jewish and we didn't celebrate Christmas. It was everyone else's holiday and I felt left out . . . like a big party I wasn't invited to. It wasn't the toys I missed, it was Santa Claus and a Christmas tree. So when I got married and had kids I decided to make up for it. I started with a seven-foot tree, all decked out with lights and tinsel, and a Star of David on top to soothe those whose Jewish feelings were frayed by the display and, for them, it was a Hanukah bush. And it warmed my heart to see the glitter, because now the party was at my house and everyone was invited. But something was missing, something big and round and jolly, with jingle bells and a ho! ho! ho! So I bought a bolt of bright red cloth and strips of white fur and my wife made me a costume. Inflatable pillows rounded out my skinny frame, but no amount of makeup could turn my face into merry old Santa. I went around looking at department store impersonations sitting on their thrones with children on their laps and flash-bulbs going off, and I wasn't satisfied with the way they looked either.

Delbert, snarled something that no one understood, which was just as well. Grandpa gathered his little darlings around him, lit his pipe, and said, "Well, I do have a Christmas story; it's about the man who met Santa Claus. Let's call him Harvey, okay kids get comfortable." Well, it was forty-six years ago this very night, the night before Christmas. Harvey was lost, there was no doubt about that. His boots crunched in the newly fallen snow. He shuddered in the sub-freezing weather. When Harvey was released from the Veteran's Administration hospital that Christmas Eve morning, the first thing he did was to call home. After talking to his Mama, and Daddy, Mary Lou, his sweetie came on. "Mary Lou, I'll be home by midnight, and I have an important question to ask you." "Oh, I know," laughed Mary Lou, "We'll be waiting."

    The Stories Behind the Candles
By Brenda B. Covert At the beginning of class Mr. Pemberton explained that several students had holiday presentations to make. To avoid a pop quiz, the class would need to be attentive and polite during the presentations.
David Raffensberger was first. His heart raced as he carried a large cardboard box to the front of the class.
"My topic is Hanukkah [HAH-nuh-kuh]. Hanukkah means 'dedicate' and 'beginning'," he said. "It's also called the Jewish Festival of Lights. Each year it's either in November or December, depending on the Jewish calendar." He opened his box and pulled out a large silver candelabra and nine blue candles. "This is a menorah [meh-NOR-uh]. It holds eight candles for the eight days of Hanukkah, plus one extra candle in the middle that is used to light the others. You add one candle each day, until finally on the last day you have all the candles lit."
Hanukkah celebrates the Jew's victory more than 2,000 years ago as they fought the Greeks for religious freedom. When they reclaimed the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, it had to be rededicated to the Lord. Although they only had one day's worth of sacred oil for the lamps, the oil burned miraculously for eight days until more oil arrived. That's why there are eight days of Hanukkah.

Christmas in Syria In Syria on December 6, a special Mass is is held in churches in honor of Saint Nicholas Thaumaturgus, who legend has said was a kind and generous man not disimilar to Saint Nicholas after who Santa Claus is modelled. On Christmas Eve everyone in the family, carries a lit candle, to stand around an unlit bonfire outside their house. The youngest child usually the son of the family reads the Christmas story, after which the bonfire is lit. The way the flames spread shows the luck of the house in the coming year. When the fire burns, psalms are sung, and when it sinks, everyone leaps over the embers making wishes. Early on Christmas morning everyone goes to Mass. At this Mass another bonfire is lit in the middle of the floor. While the wood is blazing, ancient hymns are sung and the celebrant carries a figure of the Christ Child around the building. After this the celebrant then touches the nearest person in a "touch of peace". This touch is passed from one to another until everyone has received it.

    When and What is Advent?
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends on the day before Christmas. Thus, in 2002, it begins on 1 December 2002 and ends on 24 December.
Advent means "to come " or "the coming". Anticipation of Jesus’ coming.
    The Advent Wreath
The advent wreath serves as an aid to help us focus on the beauty of the Christmas event. It helps us remember the progression of the preparations that were taken as people in the Bible awaited the birth of Christ. It can remind us of the preparations we need to make spiritually during the Christmas season.
The wreath is a circle of evergreen branches, a sign of everlasting life. Four purple or blue candles, one for each Sunday in Advent, are set in the circle. A white candle for Christmas day is placed in the center. Some traditions use a rose candle for the third week to represent joy. One candle is lit on the first Sunday in Advent with an additional candle lit each Sunday. On Christmas day the white Christ candle is lighted. A simple prayer is said like "Dear Lord, we stop our busy lives for a moment to focus on You. Be with us as we light this candle and worship together".

Light prevails in children's holiday books
Review by Jan Keeling Children's books for this holiday season are filled with light of one kind or another. These eight holiday books for children use text and illustrations to serve several of literature's time-honored purposes: to warn against extinguishing light, and to help readers see what is important about themselves and about things that are larger than themselves. "S ilent Night" by Will Moses is a charming depiction of Christmas in an old-time Vermont village. Yes, the artist/author is a descendent of beloved folk painter Anna Mary Robertson Moses, better known as Grandma Moses; in fact, he is her great-grandson and has carried on her folk art tradition by developing his own folk style and becoming internationally famous in his own right. In "Silent Night," the first stanza of the hymn is spread across the tops of the pages, with the full text of the original story by Moses beneath. Moses' tale revolves around an earthly human event that echoes the ancient hymn: the birth of a Christmas baby. Young readers will delight most of all in the illustrations, whose bright colors and details exemplify the best of folk art there is so much to look at in these paintings, so much to see!

    GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Christmas markets have a long history. The Dresdner Striezelmarkt is first mentioned in 1434. Handcarved Erzgebirgsfiguren (figurines from the Iron Ore Mountains) are the specialty there, miners, pyramids, nutcrackers Nurembergs's Christkindlesmarkt (Christ Child Market) is the most famous and one of the oldest. The first official record of this pre-Christmas market dates to 1628. A list of notices for stallholders from 1737 shows that nearly all of Nuremberg's craftsmen were represented. Back then 140 persons were given the right to sell their wares. In 1998 there were 190 stalls with 200 stallholders. Over the last decades the arrangement and decoration of the market have become particularly attractive so that it has won renown and popularity far beyond the bounds of the city itself. From early December to Christmas Eve the wintry air is filled with the aroma of Stollen (baked fruit loaves), Bratwurst, gebrannte Mandeln (roasted almonds), and Lebkuchen (gingerbread), a spicy cookie. The recipe for Lebkuchen is a treasured secret and includes nuts, eggs, honey, sugar, flour, and cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and coriander. The spices represent a time when Nuremberg was a center for the spice trade.
