A History of Christianity in Egypt
The Saints Hagiography, the writing of the lives of saints, has long been a common activity of many scholars of religion. As with any religion, the story of its success is really the story of its members who made it succeed. Christianity honors its greatest members by making them saints, and what follows is a collection of Egyptian saints that were instrumental in the growth of Christianity in Egypt. Saint Mark the Evangelist Saint Mark is credited with writing the oldest of the four canonical gospels. According to the Life of the Apostle and Evangelist Mark written by Severus, Bishop of Al-Ushmunain, in the late tenth century, Mark was one of the servants who poured out the water that Jesus turned into wine at the marriage at Cana, and that it was his house in which Jesus appeared to the disciples in hiding after His resurrection from the dead. After that time, Saint Peter and Saint Mark went out to evangelize, and one night, Peter had a dream in which he was told to go, along with Mark, to Rome and to Alexandria Saint Catherine of Alexandria monastery and church were later built by the order of the Emperor Justinian. Interestingly enough, the site where Catherine's body was found is also believed to be the site of the burning bush seen by Moses.

153. God Revealed To The Rational Skeptic - Why Christianity?
Click here to retrieve the site menu. by Rolaant L. McKenzie. Why do I believe that God exists and christianity to be the only true religion?
http://www.gospeloutreach.net/whychristianity.html
by Rolaant L. McKenzie Why do I believe that God exists and Christianity to be the only true religion? Why do I not accept the popular idea that one religion or philosophical worldview is just as good as another? These are important questions that deserve rational answers. The following is my attempt to provide them. I will begin with atheism. There are a number of reasons why I believe that atheism is inadequate as a rational worldview. Atheism is inadequate as a rational worldview because it cannot adequately explain the existence of the universe. The majesty and order of the universe, and the wonder and complexities of life on earth, cries out for an explanation. The atheist, however, is unable to provide a consistent one. If he argues that matter is eternal, he is going against modern science which states that the universe had a beginning and is gradually running down. If the atheist affirms that the universe had a beginning, then he must account for what caused it. Either way, the atheist cannot adequately explain the universe and this world so full of complex forms of life. The atheistic worldview is irrational and cannot provide an adequate basis for intelligible experience. An atheistic world is ultimately random, disorderly, transitory, and volatile. It is therefore incapable of providing the necessary preconditions to account for the laws of science and the universal laws of logic. In short, it cannot account for the meaningful realities people encounter in life.

REEXAMINATION OF THE "LOST YEARS" EVIDENCE
James W. Deardorff

PRECIS
The "lost years" evidence due to Notovitch in 1894 of Jesus being in India during his youth, along with its debunkings, are reexamined and the latter are found not to have been scholarly in any sense. Later evidence fully confirming Notovitch's find is presented. The implications that Jesus taught reincarnation and karma, not resurrection, are summarized and found entirely plausible. The ramifications this has for ecumenism with respect to the Eastern religions cannot be overstated, though for Christianity they remain unacceptable. Introduction

Introduction
It was in 1894 that news first reached the Western world of Buddhist manuscripts existing in Tibet indicating that the "lost years" of Jesus' youth had been spent in India. The alleged discoverer was Nicholas Notovitch, Russian journalist and war correspondent, who journeyed through Kashmir and Ladakh (Little Tibet) and then wrote a book about his findings, including a translation into French of the verses in Tibetan about Isa (or Issa) existing in the library of Himis monastery near Leh. and that his answers were ignored by later expositors who continued to debunk him.

158. WISHES
Essay on the Kakure Kirishitan or Hidden Christians who worshipped without scriptures, even after the ban on christianity was lifted in 1873.
http://www.uwosh.edu/home_pages/faculty_staff/earns/miyazaki.html
HIDDEN CHRISTIANS IN CONTEMPORARY NAGASAKI Miyazaki Kentaro translated by Brian Burke-Gaffney
Spanish Jesuit Francisco Xavier brought Christianity to the shores of Kagoshima in the year 1549. His arrival came near the end of a century-long period of national strife and an important turning point in Japanese history, and in the midst of this great social chaos, the Japanese people were ripe for his spiritual message. "The best people yet discovered," said Xavier of the Japanese. "It seems to me that among pagan nations there will not be another to surpass the Japanese,...a people who prize honour above all else..." Christianity prospered in this country for about a half a century, just as Xavier predicted. But after the establishment of the Tokugawa Bakufu in 1603 and subsequent national unification, it suffered almost complete undoing. The introduction of Christianity marked the first important meeting of Japan with the West, and the religious communication that followed signified much more than a mere brush with the exotic. Indeed, it was a head-on collision between Western culturethe core of which is Christianityand Japanese culture with its ancient hodgepodge of Shintoism, Buddhism and folk religion. It signified, in other words, an encounter between the monotheistic world view inherent in Western culture and the polytheistic world view of Japan. After wiping out all resistance from its political enemiesthe retainers of Toyotomi Hideyoshiand establishing unshakable control over all of Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate seized the profits from Portuguese trade and embarked upon a policy of strict suppression of Christianity, which it viewed as a threat to the bakuhan taisei (shogunate-domain system). In 1614, Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu issued a national ban on Christianity and ordered the exile of missionaries and prominent Japanese Christians to Macao and Manila. Many of the priests went into hiding after the ban, and a large number of their Japanese followers refused to renounce their faith. But in subsequent months and years they were captured one after another and forced either to recant or to die as martyrs. An estimated 40,000 people were executed during the long period between the martyrdom of the 26 Saints of Japan in Nagasaki in 1597 and the lifting of the ban on Christianity in 1873.

The Truth Shall Set You Free
Introduction
In recent years, there has been a surge of interest in religions, including a number of books which point out the errors in the literal interpretation of the Bible, as professed by the so-called Fundamentalist Christian denominations. Less attention has been devoted to examining the more liberal churches. These include the Catholic Church, liberal in the sense of not considering the Bible to be literally true. It is also the major Christian denomination and wields considerable influence in America and the world today. It would behoove us to take a rational look at the bases and influences of the more liberal churches, to see what value they have in informing our policies, both personal and public, in the light of Catholic/Protestant cooperation in the political arena, such as the Christian Coalition, and Operation Rescue, and papal pronouncements on birth control, war, capital punishment, and the third world. An example to consider is the fairly recent tenure of Governor Mario Cuomo of New York. He was pro-choice regarding abortion, a fact which led the local cardinal to suggest he might be subject to excommunication. He claimed to be personally opposed to abortion, in deference to his Catholic roots and constituents, but his opposition to abortion always seemed to me hypocritical, never reaching the level of his opposition to capital punishment, which he vetoed each year of his terms. We are not here to examine the relative merits of allowing women the choice of abortion or allowing the voters the choice of capital punishment, but I ask why the governor was afraid of excommunication so much as to denounce the threat of its use. What hold does the church (the Catholic Church, and religion in general) have over people? Was the governor concerned over his "immortal soul" or over his Catholic constituent/voters?
