Juan Luis Vives Juan Luis Vives was a Spanish philosopher educated in France and Belgium, and was an instructor at Oxford. He was at the court of Henry VIII between 1523 and 1528. Reading Vives work is a nightmare to a feminist. He believed that the "subordination of a wife to a husband was an expression of the natural order of things, not a social convention" (709). His rational depended on the different, innate, characteristics of male and female. Summary of Instruction of a Christian Woman Chastity is the main virtue of women and all others are second. If a woman has chastity, then men will want her, if she does not have it then men will not want her. The man needs to earn wealth and the woman needs to save and keep it. If a woman will not sacrifice her life for her husband then she is not worthy of be called a Christian woman or a wife. The Bible says that women must submit to her husband or father. Nature also deems women to submit to men. The rule of authority is only reserved for men. He is the lord of his house. The wife better obey her husband, and do things in the manner in which he would want them done. If the husband is sick, the wife must find a cure to his illness. Welcome to the interdisciplinary seminar Jewish Roots of Eastern Christian Mysticism The interdisciplinary seminar on the Jewish Roots of Eastern Christian Mysticism is designed as the internet version of an ongoing research seminar of graduate students at the department of theology of Marquette University (Milwaukee, USA). The seminar is directed by Alexander Golitzin , a professor of eastern Christian theology (Marquette University). The seminar started in March 2002 as an attempt to investigate Jewish mystical traditions in the eastern Christian theological and liturgical texts. It was thought that the seminar would help initiate and inspire the discussion about the Jewish influences on eastern Christian mysticism among a broader audience. The internet version of the seminar was constituted on April 17, 2002. It is a regular text seminar consisting of scholars and graduate students of ancient languages, systematic theology, philosophy, patristics, biblical exegesis, and Judaism. Currently the seminar is not confined solely to the students of Marquette University but also includes participants from various scholarly communities.
