The Best Christian Writing 2004:
An Interview with Wim Wenders

Renowned German filmmaker Wim Wenders has collaborated over the years with figures such as Francis Ford Coppola, Nicholas Ray, Michelangelo Antonioni, and Sam Shepard. His best-known works include Until the End of the World, the award-winning documentary Buena Vista Social Club, and Wings of Desire and its follow-up, Far Away, So Close!, which inspired the Hollywood film City of Angels. In the following conversation, excerpted from an interview with screenwriter and director Scott Derrickson, Wenders discusses the effects of these films upon his later life and work and his resulting spiritual transformation.

Image: I'm going to switch gears here and ask you about the spiritual transformation you've undergone in the last decade. You expressed some of that in describing the way you've changed since making Wings of Desire . How else have your experiences in the realms of faith and belief impacted your work?

JEWS AND JUDAISM IN CHRISTIAN WRITINGS OF THE SECOND CENTURY CE
INTRODUCTION Since the holocaust there has been an increased interest to delve into the history of the Christianity in search of the roots of modern antisemitism. The extreme views of Chrysostom or Cyril or Ephrem are often portrayed as the embodiment of the Adversus Judæos tradition. Moreover, these writers are often portrayed as merely fitting the cast of Christian anti-Judaism founded in the New Testament. The second century of the common era (CE) is thus made to fit into this senario of early Christian/Jewish relations. Recent scholarship has, however, begun examining and questioning the idea of a direct line of anti-Judaism from the first through the fourth centuries CE. One of the reasons for this is that the sources are relatively scarce and little is known of either their authors or their context - as compared to Chrysostom. But by at least attempting to examine each of the sources available to us in its own context and on its own merits a different picture emerges. Instead of a straight line of progression and perpetuation, we see what is more akin to a mosaic of Christian views and opinions on the Jews and Judaism. When dealing with the second century it is helpful to put aside the idea of canon or a closed collection of sacred texts outside the Hebrew scriptures (more specifically the LXX). The early Christian world was a flood of competing texts and teachings. Certainly, Christians had a sense of authority and the universal importance of some texts and authors, but Christianity was mostly defined in local terms. There was not an ecclesial structure capable of tight control over all the variations of the Christian faith. It is worthwhile then to give weight to works based on their popularity, e.g. Proto-evangelium of James and its particular message about Judaism.

Modern History Sourcebook:
John Henry Newman
On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine, July 1859
The Rambler was a Catholic periodical which, from 1848, tried to show that English Catholics were intellectually serious and capable of rational discussion. For decades, until well after World War II, English Catholicism faced the constant challenged that it was both Unenglish and intellectually and morally deficient ("the Italian mission to the Irish"). An important issue was the degree to which lay Catholics were free of ecclesiastical control. The problem was that more than a few bishops were indeed interested in controlling the thoughts and actions of the laity. One result was that The Rambler faced threats of ecclesiastical censure: this threat came to a head when a writer in the magazine - a Catholic layman who was a schools inspector - defended the position that Catholic schools which received state money should welcome government inspectors. This directly contradicted the bishops' position, albeit that the bishops had not made the position public. To save the magazine, Newman agreed to become its editor. In an editorial Newman, apologized to the bishops for The Rambler having contradicted them, but then went on to claim that "If even in the preparation of a dogmatic definition, the faithful are consulted, as lately in the instance of the Immaculate Conception, it is at least natural to anticipate such an act pf kind feeling and sympathy in great practical questions...". In other words, Catholic bishops should listen to the Catholic laity.*
