by M. Christian "Imagination is intelligence with an erection" —Victor Hugo The Challenge of Writing Fetish Erotica Here we go again, some more project updates: As I said last month, I've completed Trans Figures: Transgender Erotica . If you haven’t heard from me, drop me a line at zobop@aol.com I just started reading the Blood Lust submissions, so hopefully I should be back to all you wonderfully patient people shortly.
Of all the things to write, I feel one of the all-time toughest has got to be fetish erotica. Gay or lesbian—or straight if you're gay or lesbian or bisexual—is a piece of cake. I mean, take a quick look at it: the elements of arousal are obvious, just insert body part of preference and go with it. For gay erotica it's male body, for lesbians it's female. For straight it's the opposite. You don't have to create the ideal man or woman, in fact it's better to describe someone (the lust object) who is a bit more ... real. Perfection is dull, and can result in bad story telling, but a body with its share of wrinkles, blemishes, or sags can add dimension and depth. Same with the motivation, the inner world of your character. I've said it before but it bears repeating: the trick to writing beyond your own gender or orientation is in projecting your own mental landscape into the mind of your character. You may not know how gay sex, lesbian sex, or straight sex feels but you do know what love, affection, hope, disappointment, or even just human skin feels like. Bring those emotions and feelings to your character and your story, and you'll be able to draw a reader in.

Drafting an Effective Cover Letter While it isn't the most important thing to do before sending off a story (that's reserved for writing the story itself), drafting an effective cover letter is probably right below it. So here is a quick sample of what to do, and NOT to do, when putting together a cover letter to go with your story. That being said, remember that I'm just one of many (many) editors out there, each with their own quirks and buttons to push. Like writing the story itself, practice and sensitivity is will teach you a lot, but this will give you a start. So ... Don't Do What Bad Johnny Does Dear M. (1), Here is my story (2) for your collection (3), it's about a guy and a girl who fall in love on the Titanic (4). I haven't written anything like this before (5), but your book looked easy enough to get into (6). My friends say I'm pretty creative (7). Please fill out and send back the enclosed postcard (8). If I have not heard from you in two months (9) I will consider this story rejected and send it somewhere else (10). I am also sending this story to other people. If they want it, I'll write to let you know (11). I noticed that your guidelines say First North American Serial rights. What's that (12)? If I don't have all rights then I do not want you to use my story (13).

HarperSanFrancisco, paper, $15.95 (0-06-009483-4). 230. This annual’s third edition contains fewer research and “think” pieces and more experiential essays than the second. Reflective briefs on a deathbed visit, deciding to have another child, and surgery during pregnancy could comfort anyone. Barbara Brown Taylor’s musings on a small crucifix of Native American provenance challenge Christian self-conceptions. Walter Wangerin Jr.’s appreciation of his farmer father-in-law is as wonderful as his different, identically titled essay in Best Spiritual Writing, 2002 [BKL S 15 02], and Richard Lischer’s recollections of his first pastorate demonstrate the power, however latent, of Christian community. Less strictly personal are Paul Elie’s consideration of the phenomenon of feeling like “The Last Catholic Writer in America”; the late professor Lionel Basney’s piquant “Teacher: Eleven Notes”; Gabriel Said Reynolds’ superb personal introduction to Shia, the faith of Iran; and Frederica Mathewes-Green’s ex-feminist critique “Three Bad Ideas for Women, and What to Do about Them.” Some terrific, wholly objective pieces are here, too; for instance, J. Bottum’s “Ghost of Christmas Past: Charles Dickens’ Triumph.” —

Fathers of the Church
The word Father is used in the New Testament to mean a teacher of spiritual things, by whose means the soul of man is born again into the likeness of Christ : "For if you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet not many fathers. For in Christ Jesus , by the gospel, I have begotten you. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ" (I Cor., iv, 15, 16; cf. Gal., iv, 19). The first teachers of Christianity seem to be collectively spoken of as "the Fathers" (II Peter, iii, 4). Thus St. Irenaeus defines that a teacher is a father, and a disciple is a son (iv, 41,2), and so says Clement of Alexandria (Strom., I, i, 1). A bishop is emphatically a "father in Christ", both because it was he, in early times, who baptized all his flock, and because he is the chief teacher of his church. But he is also regarded by the early Fathers, such as Hegesippus, Irenaeus, and Tertullian as the recipient of the tradition of his predecessors in the see, and consequently as the witness and representative of the faith of his Church before Catholicity and the world. Hence the expression "the Fathers" comes naturally to be applied to the holy bishops of a preceding age, whether of the last generation or further back, since they are the parents at whose knee the Church of today was taught her belief. It is also applicable in an eminent way to bishops sitting in council, "the Fathers of Nicaea", "the Fathers of Trent". Thus Fathers have learnt from Fathers, and in the last resort from the Apostles, who are sometimes called Fathers in this sense: "They are your Fathers", says St. Leo, of the Princes of the Apostles, speaking to the Romans; St. Hilary of Arles calls them

Christian Writers Market Guide 2003 > Customer Review #1: Great Resource

This is the best market guide I have found. Even better than the Writers Market Guide. It is filled with useful resources for writers such as literary agents, writing conferences, contests for writers, writers groups, web resources, etc. Its definately worth the money. Updated yearly. The author is very knowledgeable. A must for any writer even if your focus of writing is not Christian writing.
Christian Writers Market Guide 2003 > Customer Review #2: All Writers Should Purchase I simply believe all Christian writers should purchase a copy of this book each year if they are truly interested in publishing in the Christian market. To my knowledge, there is no better book for the purpose of learning about and knowing the current market than this one.
