Music Composition: Preliminary Remarks
From the Biblical Creation Perspective
Ellen Myers

Note: I am a latecomer to music composition, with relatively sketchy background. The following reflections were formulated in response to Dr Walter Mays, my dear and excellent teacher of music composition, in deep gratitude for all he has done through the years to pass on to me our musical heritage in our Lord. jam indebted to Dr. Mays for his invaluable advice and gracious consent to be my sounding board in the preparation of this paper Any shortcomings, of course, are my own.
We rejoice in the birth of our compositions most fully when hearing our compositions first performed, but often also when in the midst of writing them. To me this is when I feel most fully alive. Paradoxically this is when lam least aware of myself. Time and place vanish from consciousness in the ecstasy of laboring to bring forth the composition conceived within me and ready for birth. The travail is total fulfillment, life and joy, no matter what effort or sacrifice it might require.
Not for applause, but to capture a God-given image: "it is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of (artists) is to search out a matter." (Pr, 25:2)

Author and Preacher
Biography of John Bunyan, to which we are indebted for all these family details) that his mother "came not of the very squalid poor, but of people who, though humble in station, were yet decent and worthy in their ways." Bunyan's parents sent their son to school, either to the recently founded Bedford grammar school, or, which is more probable, to some humbler school at Elstow. He learned reading and writing "according to the rate of other poor men's children." "I never went to school," he writes, "to Aristotle or Plato, but was brought up at my father's house in a very mean condition, among a company of poor countrymen." And what little he learned, he confesses with shame, when he was called from his primer and copy-book to help his father at his trade, was soon lost, "even almost utterly." Bunyan was at this time still resident at Elstow, where his blind child Mary and his second daughter Elizabeth were born. It was probably in 1655 that Banyan removed to Bedford. Here he soon lost the wife to whose piety he had owed so much, and about the same time his pastor and friend the "holy Mr. Gifford." His own health also suffered; he was threatened with consumption, but his naturally robust constitution carried him safely through what at one time he expected would have been a fatal illness. Three weeks later, 23 April 1661, the coronation of Charles II afforded an opportunity of enlargement. All prisoners for every offence short of felony were to be released. Those who were waiting their trials might be dismissed at once. Those convicted and under sentence might sue out a pardon under the great seal at any time within the year. Bunyan failed to profit by the royal clemency. Although he had not been legally convicted, for no witnesses had been heard against him, nor had he pleaded to the indictment, his trial having been little more than a conversation between him and the court, the authorities chose to regard it as a legal conviction, rendering it necessary that a pardon should be sued for.

Why Greek?
As Christians we testify that our Holy Scriptures are our only rule of faith and the only foundation upon which we may construct a true education. All else is shifting sand. Unfortunately, many Christians only learn to read the Bible secondhand from varying translations. Our online classes offer a unique program to equip you to understand the New Testament firsthand, in the language in which it was written. Learning Biblical Greek will establish the solid foundation for your Christian education.
"I have become convinced that of all that human language has produced truly and simply beautiful, I knew nothing before I learned Greek...Without a knowledge of Greek there is no education." Leo Tolstoy "Learn Greek; it is the language of wisdom." George Bernard Shaw

Arguments for Early Dates of Gospel Composition
We shown conclusively that the gospels are post-70 CE document . Of course late dates of gospel composition do not make believers feel comfortable since the reliability of the texts become very questionable. Thus apologists, have tried to provide arguments for earlier dates of the composition of the gospels. We will look at three arguments for early dates of gospel composition; the first is by a "liberal" scholar, while the other two are current favourites among fundamentalist apologists.
The Argument From Unfulfilled Prophecies
John A.T. Robinson in his book Redating the New Testament argued for a pre-70 CE dating of the gospels. He argued that Matthew could have been written as early as 40CE with John even earlier. Basically there are two main reasons why he argued for a pre-70CE composition:
  • Unfulfilled Prophecies : Robinson claims that there are prophecies supposedly made by Jesus that were unfulfilled. Had the gospels been written after 70 CE the authors would have fudged or changed the prophecies to make those look like they came true or leave out the prophecies altogether.

North Carolina State University WRITING A GOOD TERM PAPER:
SUGGESTIONS FOR COMPOSITION AND CITATIONS
Most instructors take both content and composition into account in evaluating student term papers. Content refers to the substance of the paper, including the information, definitions, and theories that it contains. Composition refers how the paper is written, such as the how the subject is organized, the clarity and readability of the text, the grammar and spelling, and the format of footnotes or citations. The suggestions below are directed toward improving the composition of papers. Organizing Your Paper Good organization makes it easier for the reader to follow your ideas and understand your key points. The following are several keys to good organization. Suggestion 1 Construct an outline of your paper before writing it. The outline is for your use, however, so don't submit it with your paper unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Before writing your paper, however, you may wish to show an outline to your instructor for suggestions on the paper's content and structure. Suggestion 2 Give special thought to the first paragraph.

The Bible
A collection of writings which the Church of God has solemnly recognized as inspired The name is derived from the Greek expression biblia (the books), which came into use in the early centuries of Christianity to designate the whole sacred volume. In the Latin of the Middle Ages , the neuter plural for Biblia (gen. bibliorum ) gradually came to be regarded as a feminine singular noun ( biblia , gen. bibliae , in which singular form the word has passed into the languages of the Western world. It means "The Book", by way of eminence, and therefore well sets forth the sacred character of our inspired literature. Its most important equivalents are: "The Divine Library" ( Bibliotheca Divina ), which was employed by St. Jerome in the fourth century; "the Scriptures", "the Holy Scriptures" terms which are derived from expressions found in the Bible itself; and "the Old and New Testament", in which collective title, "the Old Testament" designates the sacred books written before the coming of Our Lord , and "the New Testament" denotes the inspired writings composed since the coming of Christ.

Good question...
...were the New Testament authors influenced by pagan legends? Created 6/14/97 (part B of Jesus the Copycat? I will be posting this in increments, as I study each NT author/source. We have already seen in Jesus the Copycat? that if the NT authors were influenced by pagan religions of the day, then they did not show it very well! The image painted of Jesus of Nazareth does not seem similar enough to the other possible religious figures to prompt us to suspect 'borrowing' or 'dependence'. But to continue this study, I want to look now at the NT authors and ask the basic question of influences.
  • Question One: How would they have come in contact with these religions? Question Two: Why might they have accepted some of these religious ideas (and correspondingly, interpreted Jesus in those categories)? Question Three: What factors would have retarded their acceptance of these foreign-to-Judaism notions? Question Four: Where there any public 'checks and balances' that would have hindered publication of these views by the early Christian community, even if a lone NT author would have accepted them? Question Five: What does the literature and/or history they produced tell us about the views they accepted?
