THE ENGLISH PROGRAM The English Program Arkansas State University has twenty full-time graduate professors whose interests range from medieval romance to the contemporary American novel and from Chaucer to creative writing. Most have earned doctorates at such universities as Indiana, Duke, Texas, Chicago, Iowa, and Michigan State. In addition, our teachers are productive scholars and writers, having published over twenty books and several hundred articles. Several have won awards for excellence in teaching and research. Our graduates have gone into careers in fields such as teaching, writing, editing, and law. Some have gone on to pursue graduate work at other institutions, including such universities as Texas Christian, Iowa, Tennessee, Missouri, and Arizona. While students are at ASU, they are encouraged to participate in as wide a range of activities as possible. Our students have presented papers at regional conferences, shared creative works at poetry and fiction readings, and published both literary criticism and creative writing. They also have the opportunity to listen to and meet nationally and regionally known authors, such as John Barth, Barry Hannah, and Ernest Gaines. The graduate program covers a full range of courses in all genres and periods. In addition, graduate students can participate in the university honors program. Recent course topics include dystopias, aging, the Vietnam War, the baroque, iconography, ethnic studies, and gender.

History (B.A.) Humanities (B.A.) ... Pre-Law (B.A.) Academic Minors English History Purpose The purpose of the Division of Humanities is to assist in providing the foundation of a liberal arts education to prepare the student to seek knowledge for its own sake and to place it in a Biblical framework. The primary goal is the pursuit of truth so that the mind, the reason, and the power to reflect are exercised. Programs offered within the division are designed to send students to their sacred and secular duties well-prepared and fortified with Christian character. Description of Division of Humanities The courses offered by this division form a major part of the foundation of the liberal arts education and lead to six academic majors including five bachelor degree programs. Majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts require instruction at the intermediate level in a foreign language and a course in philosophy. This requirement assumes that the student will have taken two years or more of language at the high school level and will be ready to resume language studies at the college level in Spanish or French. In most cases, students will have to take beginning level foreign language to be successful at the intermediate level.

    Rhetoric
Dr. Gaillet's research and teaching interests are firmly rooted in the history of rhetoric and modern composition theory. Much of her scholarly work has focused on 19th-century Scottish contributions to rhetorical theory and writing instruction, research conducted primarily on the manuscripts of Scottish rhetoricians. In published works, Dr. Gaillet examines ways that cultural, social, and economic developments historically have influenced composition instruction. In her recent edited collection, Scottish Rhetoric and Its Influence , Dr. Gaillet calls for a new appraisal of the importance of 18th- and 19th-century Scottish rhetoric, a period credited for shaping present-day studies in psychology, philosophy, literary criticism, oral communication, English literature, and composition. Her current research projects include a study of the role rhetorics of assimilation played in the formation of English studies. At Georgia State University, Dr. Gaillet has worked to expand the course offerings in composition, rhetoric, and professional development. She has published two course descriptions and numerous pedagogical articles stressing the importance of preparing graduate students to join their professional writing communities. Her students have delivered papers at conferences, written successful grant proposals, and published in scholarly journals.

Moving Beyond Academic Discourse Composition Studies and the Public Sphere Christian R. Weisser Foreword by Gary A. Olson March 2002 paper, 0-8093-2416-4, $20.00s 176 pages, 6 x 9 Rhetoric and Composition “Weisser’s book is a model of clarity. . . . and his treatment of the issue of public writing is the most extensive I have read.” —Patricia Bizzell, College of the Holy Cross Moving student writing beyond academic discourse and into larger public spheres is a difficult task, but Christian R. Weisser’s study challenges composition instructors to do just that. This highly accessible book does what no other study has attempted to do: place the most current, cutting-edge theories and pedagogies in rhetoric and composition in their intellectual and historical contexts, while at the same time offering a unique, practical theory and pedagogy of public writing for use both inside and outside of the classroom. By positing a theory of the public for composition studies, one which envisions the public sphere as a highly contested, historically textured, multilayered, and sometimes contradictory site, Weisser offers a new approach to the roles that compositionists might assume in their attempts to initiate progressive political and social change.

Preparing for Seminary Recommended Reading List Students enter seminary with diverse backgrounds and different levels of acquaintance with the subjects that are dealt with in theological education. Students vary in academic skills such as reading, research, writing, composition, and analysis of arguments and evidence. Students may enter seminary without a background in liberal arts such as philosophy and literature, and thus find themselves at a disadvantage in studying apologetics, church history, biblical interpretation, preaching, and other disciplines. This list of suggested introductory readings is intended to prepare students in subject areas where they may have minimal prior study. It is divided into three levels of difficulty under each subject area: Level 1 is an introductory level, for the reader who has not studied the subject previously. Level 2 is more challenging. These books introduce the reader to the heart of the subject, and the most fruitful perspective on and approaches to the subject. Level 3 is accessible to thoughtful students even before seminary studies, but addresses more profound issues and problems than Levels I and 2.
