CHRISTIAN WOLFF
Interview by Jason Gross (April 1998)
Praise be to Christian Marclay for helping with this. PSF: You were originally studying with John Cage. What kind of effect do you think that had on your work? All kinds of effect! (laughs) Practically, he was my first and only composition teacher. He taught me a handful of practical things and then he basically let me go ahead on my own. Our lessons lasted for about six weeks. He taught me about rhythmic structure, Webern, did some counterpoint exercises and that was it basically. After that, I was doing my own pieces. I would make up my own systems for my pieces and he figured that was good enough. I didn't have to go on with counterpoint or other peoples' systems as long as I knew systems and knew how to work with it. That was the point. PSF: Did you find shortcomings with counter point? To tell the truth, I wasn't very good at it and he wasn't very interested. That's somewhat ironic because over the last ten years, I've become very interested in it and I've used it all the time in one form or another.
PSF: At that time when you began, Cage as well as David Tudor, Morton Feldman and Earle Brown were all active as well. All of you were seen together as a musical movement. Did you see similarities there or mostly differences in styles?

The English major offers course study in British and American literature, composition, and language that provides a background for graduate study. Both major and minor sequences are designed for future elementary and secondary school teachers. Students should also be aware that an English major or minor can be helpful preparation for other vocations. Business administration majors, pre-medical, pre-seminary, and pre-law students should consider the advantages of the discipline of English for their specializations. Students interested in communications (journalism, public relations, library work, etc.) need a strong background in English. General education requirements in oral communication for the English department are folded into English 201, 211, 272, 274, 276, 303, and 312, all of which have an oral presentation as part of the course. The capstone requirement is met through the development of a portfolio of selections from each major student’s writing in the four years and participation in the Senior Seminar. The field education requirement is met through an internship, either directed teaching with the education department or one worked out by the student with assistance from the student’s advisor.

This class is the first half of what the English Department considers a two-year study of composition and literature. In it students will be given the opportunity to refine their skills as a communicator. Writing is of the utmost importance and will be stressed throughout the entire year: This includes journal writing, letter writing, poetry, fiction, and argumentation. While writing is emphasized, we do not forget speech, listening, reading comprehension, and vocabulary (Latin roots). Readings for this course will largely come from the ancient tradition. We will read "The Code of Hammurabi", significant portions of Scripture; plays by Sophocles, Euripides, and Shakespeare; Homer's "Odyssey"; and a variety of poetry. 1 Peter
Introduction
T his letter begins with an address by Peter to Christian communities located in five provinces of Asia Minor ( 1 Peter 1:1 ), including areas evangelized by Paul ( Acts 16:6-7 ). Christians there are encouraged to remain faithful to their standards of belief and conduct in spite of threats of persecution. Numerous allusions in the letter suggest that the churches addressed were largely of Gentile composition ( 1 Peter 1:14 ), though considerable use is made of the Old Testament ( 1 Peter 1:24 The contents following the address both inspire and admonish these "chosen sojourners" ( 1 Peter 1:1 ) who, in seeking to live as God's people, feel an alienation from their previous religious roots and the society around them. Appeal is made to Christ's resurrection and the future hope it provides ( 1 Peter 1:3-5 ) and to the experience of baptism as new birth ( 1 Peter 1:3 ). The suffering and death of Christ serve as both source of salvation and example ( 1 Peter 1:19 ). What Christians are in Christ, as a people who have received mercy and are to proclaim and live according to God's call ( 1 Peter 2:9-10 ), is repeatedly spelled out for all sorts of situations in society (

http://bil.members.beeb.net/msw.html
Software for Music Composition
My interest in Music has developed over the years - I had a few piano lessons as a child and hated them. A friend in school taught me a few guitar chords and I quite liked that - this was just a few years before the Beatles came along. I learnt songs by Lonnie Donegan, Elvis, Cliff Richard and others of that ilk, and got quite enthusiastic about it, but then it waned a bit. It had a bit of revival when I went to University as I was in demand for sing-songs at parties etc. I had also developed an interest in classical music in the last couple of years at school. The music teacher was one of the few teachers who bothered to treat me as an adult, and this encouraged me to listen to some of the stuff that he played to us. He was a great fan of William Walton, but he never really clicked with me. My great love at that time was Dmitri Shostakovitch, and he has continued to be the greatest composer of all time for me. My real hate has always been Mozart, but of late I have mellowed and have to admit to owning two CDs of his music. My music-making activities dried up after Uni, until I became involved with the local church. I had always considered myself to be a Christian, but had a conversion experience at the tender age of 33 and have never looked back. One of the things that I discovered was that Christian music has moved on since Wesley's day and that modern styles of song were acceptable, as well as the "traditional" style of hymns. My wife let the cat out of the bag by saying that I could play the guitar, and I was press-ganged into leading worship sessions. My abilities at that time were appallingly mediocre, but under pressure, and with lots of practise, I was soon able to cope with almost anything.

Hans Christian von Baeyer
Chancellor Professor of Physics
College of William and Mary
(Adapted from the essay "Two-Way Street," published in THE SCIENCES, Nov./Dec. 1990) My uncle Karl had no sense of direction. Armed with an elaborate set of instructions and a street map of downtown Montreal, he would gamely set off on an errand, and we children would gleefully brace ourselves for the next development. Three-quarters of an hour later, without fail, the telephone would ring. My aunt Lotte, cursing under her breath, would have to interrupt whatever she was doing, borrow a neighbor's car and drive out to some forlorn suburb to rescue Uncle Karl. It wasn't that he was stupid. Far from it: he was a successful psychiatrist, an accomplished musician, and a best-selling autobiographer. He just couldn't read a map. Not everyone has a gift for orienteering. It requires more than mere literacy (which my uncle clearly possessed) and adequate powers of observation (he was, after all, trained to observe people). Reading maps takes a special knack for relating real territory to its symbolic representation: imagining the steepness of a hiking trail from the spacing of the contour lines of a topographic map or, conversely, fixing your position of the map based on your first glimpse of a power line over the brow of a hill. To make such connections you have to shuttle between two levels of reality. The pursuit of physics demands similar skill: the ability to shuttle effortlessly between two very different modes of thinking. And therein lies its chief difficulty.

Nor were they the only ones to be accepted, at one time or another, as sacred Scripture. Unfortunately, nearly all the other early Christian writings have been lost or destroyed. But approximately twenty-five books written at about the same time as the New Testament have survived, books that reveal the rich diversity of early Christian views about God, Jesus, the world, salvation, ethics, and ritual practice. http://www.bowiestate.edu/academics/english/freshcomp/ngugi.htm
Home Instructors Syllabi Bibliographies ... e-mail Ngugi wa Thiong'o One of Africa's most accomplished and prominent novelists, Ngugi wa Thiong'o was born in 1938 in an area known at the time as the "White Highlands," part of the British-ruled Kenya Colony. This context proves important in his early novels, which deal with the dilemmas of growing up in two worlds: as a Kikuyu/African and a Westerner/Christian. He was educated at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the University of Leeds. His early works, Weep Not Child The River Between , and A Grain of Wheat , depict the conflict of cultures and the role of Christianity, English education, and the increasingly oppressive treatment of the Kikuyu and other Africans, whose land had been taken by the colonists. Ngugi taught at Makerere University, University of Nairobi, and Northwestern University. While at the University of Nairobi, he chose to write in his native Kikuyu to help revitalize indigenous languages. His subsequent writing is critical of the corrupt politicians and other personalities of post-independence Kenya. Such politically charged writing led to his 1977 arrest and detention. After his release he went into exile, and was never reinstated as professor at the University of Nairobi. Ngugi remains in self-imposed exile, and taught at Yale University for several years before joining the faculty of NYU in 1993.
