MARY "FAKER" EDDY AND THE CULT OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE by Frank R. Zindler
The Probing Mind Series The following is the text of an article that appeared in the
American Atheists magazine, September, 1987. The less we know or think about hygiene, the less we are predisposed to sickness. Mary Baker Eddy

action carried out by the parents, it is the result of deliberate inaction. Whether the sacrifice be the result of a deliberate action or inaction, it is done because the religious beliefs of the parents are considered more important than the child. One of the definitions which Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary gives for the term 'sacrifice' is "destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else." Far from being the rhetorical abuse of language alleged by religious critics, the term 'child-sacrifice' appears to be both accurate and appropriate for describing faith-healing-related deaths of children. Not only do certain parents think their religious beliefs are more important than the lives of their children, the State of Ohio thinks so too! The Ohio juvenile code at 2151.03(e) makes the astonishing claim that:

We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. A millennium is a millenium is a milennium Stephen Lapointe BOSTON - There are many soaring hopes for the new millennium. I have a rather humble one: that we learn to spell the word correctly. Unfortunately, in the Scrabble Game of Life, there is an apparent shortage of N's. I recall an exchange with a decorated television producer who was developing a documentary on the dawn of the 20th century. Somewhat surprisingly, the program proposal had been rebuffed several times. Finally this producer, a fastidious Yale graduate, handed me the proposal's cover letter. And there it was, in the opening paragraph: "Due to the surge of interest in the millenium [sic], this program is guaranteed to reach a substantial viewership...." When I alerted the producer to the error, she was utterly dumbfounded, as if told by a reliable source that the sun had been extinguished.

CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
(CHRISTIAN SCIENCE)
Because of its espousal of spiritual healing and its affirmation that Christian Science is incompatible with reliance upon materia medica, the Church of Christ, Scientist has been one of the most important of the nonconventional religions in America as well as a matter of intense controversy from the day of its founding.
THE FOUNDER: The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1919) who as a young woman had been continually hobbled with poor health. In 1862 she learned of Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a mental healer in Portland, Maine. In October of that year she traveled to Portland and placed herself under his care. She soon experienced some relief of her symptoms which she ascribed to his efforts. She became his student and took the opportunity, when offered, to pass them on to others. While grateful for his help and generous with words of praise at the time of his death in 1866, she was disturbed by the periodic return of her ilness and the conflicts of Quimby's ideas and those she found in the bible. Two weeks after Quimby's death, on February 1, 1866, she slipped on an icy pavement. Three days later while slowly and painfully recuperating, the Biblical Truth was imparted to her and her health was restored immediately. That event marked the beginning of Christian Science. She quickly saw the conflict between the newly discovered truth and some of Quimby's ideas and further study led her to abandon Quimby's mental and magnetic teachings altogether. She had realized that God was the only Life, and that Life was the only reality of being. There was no healing agent, as Quimby taught, either magnetic force or mind, only the unity with God in which there was no room for disease.

What is Skepticism?
The modern skeptic movement is devoted to scientific examination of extraordinary claims, particular involving paranormal events. The skeptic does not necessarily deny claims of ESP, dowsing, astrology, UFO's, ghosts, poltergeists, channeling, faith healing, near-death experiences, etc., but believes that such claims are and should be subject to scientific inquiry. Furthermore, the more unusual a claim is, the more evidence must be presented to support that claim. This credo of the modern skeptic movement can be briefly summarized as Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. Famous modern skeptics include James Randi (The Amazing Randi), a professional magician and MacArthur prize winner, and Martin Gardner, former Scientific American columnist and author of many books. Magazines such as the Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic represent the skeptical point of view.

An open letter to
followers of the Christian Science movement
The following article is addressed to Christian Scientists (not scientists who are Christian)those who have embraced the teachings popularized by Mary Baker Eddy. A s I walked by the First Church of Christ, Scientist outside the campus of Harvard University, I could not help but notice the verse of Scripture on the sign in the front lawn:
"I am God; there is none else." This quotation from Isaiah 45:22 stopped me in my tracks. "Amazing," I thought. "It is just amazing how two people can read the same verse from the Bible, and yet interpret it in two entirely different ways!" Why? How can this happen? The answer lies in one's world view. We define the phrase as a person's view of the world (and universe) and her/his place in it. As a Christian Scientist, your world view is quite different from mine. Though most of you probably never have thought about it, the world view espoused by the writings of Mary Baker Eddy is that of Absolute Pantheism. Absolute Pantheism sets forth the thesis that absolutely all is God , and that therefore the material world is illusory. Accompanying this is a
