SUBJECT: Not Pantheism, but Christian Science
BELOVED brethren, since last you gathered at the feast of our Passover, the winter winds have come
and gone; the rushing winds of March have shrieked and hummed their hymns; the frown and smile of April, the laugh of May, have fled; and the roseate blush of joyous June is here and ours. In unctuous unison with nature, mortals are hoping and working, putting off outgrown, wornout, or soiled gar- ments - the pleasures and pains of sensation and the sackcloth of waiting - for the springtide of Soul. For what a man seeth he hopeth not for, but hopeth for what

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science."
Mary Baker Eddy Based on Reason and Revelation

Christian Science is a religion of reason and revelation. In harmony with the Bible, it teaches that God is the only creator, and that all that He created is good. If this is true, it follows that sickness and evil, which are not good, can be no part of His creation. Mary Baker Eddy tells us:

And because God is Mother, too, the strength of divine protection can be accompanied by a feeling of comfort, of sheltering and nurturing love. Spotts Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor THE HAGUE - Move over pork bellies; make way for carbon dioxide. The gas that puts fizz in soft drinks and helps warm the climate is becoming a hot commodity for a growing number of companies worldwide. Carbon-dioxide emissions are likely to be restricted with or without an agreement when two weeks of climate talks wrap up here this week on how to implement the 1997 Kyoto Protocols, many analysts say. Even if the protocols aren't adopted, countries including the United States are still bound by the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change to reduce emissions to 1990 levels. One way to achieve those cuts, advocates argue, is to use emissions trading to trim the amount of carbon dioxide economies pump into the atmosphere.

Subscribe for free Jihad means "striving or struggling in the way of God." It is a central concept in Islam. Muslims should strive to know and do the will of God. Historically, the "greater" jihad refers to the struggle each person has within him or herself to do what is right. Because of human pride, selfishness and sinfulness, people of faith must constantly wrestle with themselves and strive to do what is right and good. The "lesser" jihad involves the outward defense of Islam. Muslims should be prepared to defend Islam, including military defense, when the community of faith is under attack. While the vast majority of Muslims clearly reject the violent extremism manifest on Sept. 11, some religiously inspired and politically motivated individuals and groups attempt to justify their behavior in the context of a holy war or struggle in defense of Islam.

Suffering Children

The unwillingness of many Christian Science parents to seek help from physicians for their critically ill children has led to many painful and unnecessary deaths and, increasingly, to legal actions that have become burdensome to the Church and its members
by Caroline Fraser

"B eloved in Thee I Am Well Pleased" is the epitaph on the gravestone of James Andrew Wantland. According to the Gospel of Saint Luke, God spoke these words to his son, Jesus, at Jesus' baptism. Given that James Andrew WantlandAndrew, he was calledwas twelve years old when he died, the choice of epitaph is striking. It does not express the sentiments one usually associates with the untimely death of a child. It suggests satisfaction, rather than regret or loss or sorrow. On the grave of a mature person it would presumably pay tribute to a life of accomplishment and fulfillment; on that of a child it seems almost too much to bear. But Andrew Wantland was the child of Christian Scientists, and the children of Christian Scientists have much to bear. I know. I am one. Most people who have heard of Christian Science know one thing about it: Christian Scientists do not "believe" in doctors. More accurately, Christian Scientists do not believe in medical science, or what they call "materia medica." They generally do not accept medical care for themselves, and many do not permit it for their children. They believe they can heal through prayer. Had my brother or sister or I contracted a serious illness or met with a life-threatening accident while we were growing up, we would have been expected to heal ourselves, just as we were expected to heal ourselves of colds, flu, allergies, and bad behavior. That we survived to adulthood was a matter of luck. Andrew Wantland was not so lucky.

Depleted Uranium
Depleted uranium is created as a by-product of the processes used to convert natural uranium for use as nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. NATO used ammunition and weaponry made of depleted uranium during its air strikes on Yugoslavia in 1999. Suspicious deaths and illnesses among Europeans exposed to the substance are prompting investigators to examine DU's health risks. The United States has denied any link between illnesses and exposure to depleted uranium.
