Joelle Cosentino JOELLE COSENTINO is another young lady who got an early start. At age 3 she started training at a local dance studio in New Jersey in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip-hop and Hawaiian. Through Dance Masters of America, she won various scholarships to prestigious dance studios in New York City which furthered her professional training. At the Broadway Dance Center, Joelle worked with some of the most talented dance teachers and choreographers in the world, which inspired her to "go for it." Earning both regional and national awards, she has the distinct recognition of being American Dance Award's Dancer of the Year. A pageant "princess", her experience as "Miss New Jersey American Pre-teen Co-ed", 2nd runner-up to "Miss Teen NJ USA", and State "Jr. Miss Competition", gained this talented beauty a scholarship for dance performance to UCLA where she just recently earned her degree in Dance and Choreography, and where she was a Bruin star dance team member. She was selected to choreograph UCLA's Competition Routine at USA Nationals, entitled "Yokoso," that started a trend among collegiate dance teams with its Japanese flair. She's choreographed, staged, and directed half-time productions at the Rose Bowl, the Guess? 2000 Spring Line Show, theme park shows, and theater productions. She's coached cheerleading and dance teams nationwide. Her students have earned Joelle recognition as National Dance Olympus Choreographer of the Year, Starbound Choreography winner, choreography awards at Headliners, Starpower, and Showstopper competitions.

The one constant presence in creations of those scenes was the Choreographer. After choreographers read the script to a play, ballet, or musical, they are responsible for developing routines and dance movements that convey the feeling and emotion of the story. Death, love, anger, joy, remorse, suspense are several of the emotions shown on stage or screen. Choreographers need to be good communicators because they have to teach actors/dancers routines that bring the production and it's message to life. Although choreographers have to know a great deal about movement, they do not have to be top-notch dancers themselves. Choreographers spend many hours rehearsing with dancers/actors until every movement is perfect. When ready, they join the rest of the cast and the choreographer is responsible for making sure exits and entrances flow and stage positions are correct. Choreographers' jobs end on opening night and then they look for another production to choreograph.

Home Beyond the Classroom Basic Guidelines of Choreography for Ballet Basic Guidelines of Choreography for Ballet
Adapted From: Ballet For Dummies When you decide to choreograph your own ballet dances, you have complete freedom of expression. And that's as it should be. But artists of all kinds have found that they flourish best when they voluntarily submit to certain limitations. The series of ballet gestures, for example, is a "limitation" that somehow sets the imaginations of the great ballet choreographers free.
What makes a choreographer want to create a particular dance in the first place? Most choreographers say that they are usually inspired by one of two things: the music or the theme. When you hear a certain piece of music, are you swept away in an ecstatic whirlwind? Do colors and shapes and movements immediately suggest themselves to you? Are you lost in time and space? If so, we know a good doctor who can help. But failing that, the piece sounds like a good candidate for choreography. If there's one basic rule of choreography, it's this: The gestures should somehow reflect the music. What sets the successful choreographers apart is that their gestures embody the music beautifully, as if each musical phrase had been written just for them.
