Cholera spreading in Basra, health group warns
Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT Transition of Power Life after War CNN/Money: Rebuilding Iraq War in Iraq Special Report BASRA, Iraq (CNN) The World Health Organization has confirmed four cases of cholera in this southern Iraqi city, and the group says dozens more may have the potentially fatal illness. The lack of clean water and security combined with economic troubles are allowing cholera to spread rapidly, WHO spokesman Ian Simpson said Thursday. "Cholera has a fatality rate of more than 50 percent if it is not treated," he said. "This is probably the most serious health concern in Iraq right now." About 50 samples have been sent to a laboratory in Kuwait for testing. Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine. In severe cases, it can lead to dehydration and shock, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness can easily be prevented and treated but the World Health Organization said Thursday that conditions in Basra make it difficult to do either.

Purchase Cholera Description Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by toxigenic Vibrio cholerae O-group 1 or O-group 139. The infection is often mild and self-limited or subclinical. Patients with severe cases respond dramatically to simple fluid- and electrolyte-replacement therapy. Infection is acquired primarily by ingesting contaminated water or food; person-to-person transmission is rare. Occurrence Since 1961, V. cholerae has spread from Indonesia through most of Asia into Eastern Europe and Africa, and from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula. In 1991, an extensive epidemic began in Peru and spread to neighboring countries in the Western Hemisphere. In 2001, nearly 185,000 cases from 58 countries were reported to the WHO. Risk for Travelers Persons who follow usual tourist itineraries and who observe food safety recommendations while in countries reporting cholera have virtually no risk. Risk increases for those who drink untreated water or eat poorly cooked or raw seafood in endemic areas.

bezahlte Anzeige CHOLERA Prof. Dr. Herwig Kollaritsch Was ist Cholera? Laut Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) erkrankten 1999 weltweit circa 200.000 Menschen an Cholera, von denen 8.000 verstarben.

BASRA, Iraq Mounting piles of waste and sewage and contaminated water supplies have led to southern Iraq's first reported cholera cases raising concerns of a potentially devastating outbreak. About a dozen cases have so far been reported by doctors in Basra and the World Health Organization (WHO) says it expects many more cases in the general community have gone unreported. "An outbreak of cholera, affecting probably several hundreds of people, is occurring," warned Fadela Chaib of the U.N. agency, which dispatched a team to the city this week. No deaths have been reported so far but health officials said they feared the problem is already reaching epidemic proportions. "If we're seeing 17 confirmed cases, you can expect 10 times more within the larger population," Dr. Denis Coulombier, an epidemiologist with WHO told The Associated Press.

Cholera
What is cholera?
Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but sometimes can be severe. Approximately 1 in 20 infected persons has severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhea , vomiting, and leg cramps. In these persons, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours. How does a person get cholera?
A person may get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. In an epidemic, the source of the contamination is usually the feces (stool) of an infected person. The disease can spread rapidly in areas with inadequate treatment of sewage and drinking water. The cholera bacterium may also live in the environment in brackish rivers and coastal waters. Shellfish eaten raw have been a source of cholera, and a few persons in the United States have contracted cholera after eating raw or undercooked shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico. The disease is not likely to spread directly from one person to another; therefore, casual contact with an infected person is not a risk for becoming ill.

In the mid-1850s, there were two major theories about the transmission of cholera. Dr. John Snow used techniques which would later be known as medical geography to confirm that the transmission of the disease occurred by swallowing contaminated water or food and not by inhaling infected air.

Cholera Verbreitungskarte Die Cholera wird durch Bakterien (sog. Vibrio cholerae) verursacht.
