Mozambique Country Information
Mozambique stretches for 2500km (1550mi) on the south-eastern coast of Africa, bordered by Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the north-west, Zimbabwe to the west, and South Africa and Swaziland to the south-west. The island of Madagascar lies directly east, 400km (250mi) across the Mozambique Channel.
The coastal plain, as wide as 200km (125mi) in the south, rises to mountains and plateaux in the north and west. Two of Southern Africa's longest rivers, the Zambezi and the Limpopo, flow through the country. Other major rivers are the Save and the Rovuma (which forms the northern border with Tanzania). Massive Lake Malawi (also called Lake Nyasa) forms part of the border with Malawi.
As you go westward, the land changes abruptly from a narrow, palm-studded strip of beach along the coast to a broad belt of savannah and woodland, then forested mountains. Trees include hardwoods, acacia and papaya. Fauna include the rare, endangered black rhinoceros.
There are many regional variations in Mozambique, but generally the dry season runs from April to September, when the average daily high tops out at 27°C (80°F) on the coast, cooler inland. The rainy season lasts most of the rest of the year, when the average daily high hits 31°C (88°F).

Angola
Formerly Portuguese West Africa, officially Republic of Angola, an independent state in southwestern Africa. Angola is bounded on the north and east by the Republic of Zaire, on the east by Zambia, on the south by Namibia, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. A small exclave, Cabinda, is located some 30 km (about 20 mi) to the north and is bounded on the north by the Republic of the Congo, on the east and south by Zaire, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Angola has a coastline of more than 1600 km (more than 1000 mi) and a total area of 1,246,700 sq km (481,351 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Luanda.
Land and Resources
Angola is the seventh largest country in Africa, covering an area greater than France and Spain combined.
Physiographic Regions
Angola can be divided into three major regions. They are, from west to east, the coastal plain, a transition zone, and a vast inland plateau. The low-lying coastal plain varies from about 50 to 150 km (about 30 to 90 mi) in width. The transition zone, which consists of a series of terraces or escarpments, is about 150 km (about 90 mi) wide in the north, but diminishes to about 30 km (about 20 mi) in the center and south. To the east of this zone is the vast Angolan plateau, which covers approximately two-thirds of the country and has an average elevation of 1000 to 1520 m (3300 to 5000 ft). Higher elevations are reached in the mountains of the central section, which culminate in Mount Moco (2620 m/8596 ft), the country's highest point.

Mozambique is located on the south eastern coast of Africa. Mozambique has persevered, despite the brutal civil war and the floods, which ravaged this poor country. Mozambique's sandy palm-fringed beaches and coral reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago still qualify as one of the most beautiful places in Africa. After almost a decade of peace and international effort to restore the flood ravaged country Mozambique is returning to its rightful place as one of the jewels of Africa.
As you travel overland in a westerly direction, the land changes abruptly from a narrow, palm-studded strip of beach along the coast to a broad belt of savannah and woodland, then forested mountains. Bird watching is popular in Mozambique, especially in the southern part of the country and the Maputo Elephant reserve.

Desperate Mozambicans clamour for living bread
Judith Kendall / UBS Destructive flood creates passion for spiritual comfort. Judy Kendall, a photojournalist working for the UBS in Maputo, accompanied workers on a distribution trip. They drove into Macia, not far from a spot where people had recently sought refuge by climbing trees. Some of those survivors had been rescued by helicopter, holding above their heads what in some cases was their only possession - a Bible. In Macia a Bible Society staff member started passing out Bibles from the relative safety of our truck. Within seconds, scores of flood victims screaming for Bibles had surrounded the vehicle. A sea of arms desperately extended empty hands, pleading for the sustenance of God's Word. "When one of them would receive the treasured gift, his face would light up and he would hoot with joy," Kendall reported. "Here, in his hands, was potential hope and healing."

Geometry Out of Africa
Both of my parents were born and grew up in the little Baltic country of Latvia. I remember, as a young child in northern Ontario, intently watching my father painstakingly color in tiny squares of a grid to create a symmetric design. Using yarn and needle, my mother would then transfer that highly geometric pattern to cloth, creating a wall hanging, a pillow cover, or some other decorative article. Geometric patterns with a high degree of symmetry are characteristic of much of traditional Latvian folk art. See http://www.webwm.com/w/h/frame0.htm for some striking examples of Latvian cross-stitch design. I have long been intrigued by the geometric designs created by various cultures, both past and present, throughout the world. I'm impressed by the variety of such patterns. At the same time, there are wonderful similarities among designs in different parts of the world, even when there's no evidence of direct contact between the groups. That's a consequence of the underlying mathematics. Given a set of rules, there are many instances in which the number of possibilities is finite. The five regular polyhedra and the 17 wallpaper symmetries are good examples. Two recent, beautifully illustrated books have introduced me to African geometry. To many people, that's an unknown, rarely glimpsed realm. The books help dispel some of the mystery, revealing a rich tapestry of geometric designs and concepts.

Follow Ups Post Followup ADC Network Notice Board FAQ Posted by jack kybird (80.225.87.107) on March 16, 2002 at 09:43:49: What is Palo Mayombe?
Palo Mayombe is an African Diasporic religion originated with the Bantu people from the Congo region of Africa
it's Priests are, called Paleros or are feared by many because of their practices of brujeria, or witchcraft.
Practice and worship in Palo is centered around the prendas , which are consecrated pots that contain sticks, bones, dirts and herbs that are sacred to a particular Nkisi, the Gods and Goddessess of Palo.
. Prendas are very powerful in the hands of a trained Palero, and can be utilized to perform nearly any function.
The Spirits of the Dead, called the Fumbi, are also of paramount importance to the Palero. Paleros work with Spirit Guides to obtain information and wisdom, as well as with lower spirits that serve a variety of functions at the Tata (Father) or Yaya's (Mother) behest. These lower spirits are sometimes referred to as perros, or dogs.
The Gods and Goddesses of Palo
In Palo Mayombe, the gods and goddesses that the Palero worships and calls upon for help are called the Nkisi. Each Nkisi rules over a different aspect of life and nature. The Nkisi are housed in special pots that are called prendas. The prenda also houses the Fumbi, are Spirits of the Dead who aid and serve the Nkisi as well as the Palero. Without the Nkisi and the Fumbi, the Palero is powerless.

    MOZAMBICAN POLITICAL FACTS
    Mozambique Background:
Almost five centuries as a Portuguese colony came to a close with independence in 1975. Large-scale emigration by whites, economic dependence on South Africa, a severe drought, and a prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. The ruling party formally abandoned Marxism in 1989, and a new constitution the following year provided for multiparty elections and a free market economy. A UN-negotiated peace agreement with rebel forces ended the fighting in 1992.
