Compact History

Geographic Overview When complete these Histories will encompass approximately 240 tribal histories (contact to 1900). They will be limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also include those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles ( Huron Micmac , Assiniboine, etc.). Each history's content and style are representative. At the end of each History you will find links to those Nations referred to in the particular History you have just read. It is my intent to use the Internet so as to solicit feedback regarding these Histories and I want you to feel free to comment or suggest corrections via e-mail. Working together we can end some of the historical misinformation about Native Americans. Now, having said that, I would like to present the outline which will provide a glimpse as to how I intend to address these Histories. While there has been some initial jumping around, I do intend to present each History in the order to be found below. I look forward to your comments...

Many of these tribally affiliated ethnic groups endure today as political communities. The name "Indians" was bestowed by Christopher Columbus, who mistakenly believed that the places he found them were among the islands in Southeast Asia known to Europeans as the Indies. Its boundaries are imprecise: the Pacific coast states of Washington and Oregon are always included, with Idaho a common addition. Extreme western Montana, near Missoula, is also sometimes included. A broader view of the region leads to the inclusion of the southwestern British Columbia. This broader view may relate to the region's modern origins in the former Oregon Country.

Native Peoples, Lewis and Clark, and Mapmaking
by Herman Viola Tribes and Culture Areas on the Lewis and Clark Trail The Louisiana Purchase nearly doubled the territorial size of the United States. Occupying that vast area were numerous Indian tribes. Although we tend to think of Indians as one people, the tribes Lewis and Clark met were actually very different from one another. Indeed, in terms of language, appearance, and way of life they were as dissimilar from each other as the peoples of Europe. Some of the Indians lived in wooden houses. Some lived in skin houses. Some made wooden boats. Some made boats of bark or animal hides. Some ate dog meat. Others would eat it only if starving. Some tribes were warlike. Others thought war was barbaric. These are "cultural" differences. Tribes that lived near each other, shared a similar way of life, and spoke a similar language are said to share the same culture and are grouped together in a culture area. During their journey to the Pacific Ocean, Lewis and Clark traveled through three different culture areas: the Plains, Plateau, and Northwest Coast. The Plains Indians were primarily nomadic buffalo hunters who lived most of the year in tipis. The horse was an important part of their culture.

INDEX OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN This page is a gateway to information concerning approximately 80 western Native American tribes, visited and photographed by Edward S. Curtis from 1890 to 1930, taken from The North American Indian , Curtis' massive lifework. The North American Indian consists of 20 volumes of text, describing in detail all aspects of each Native American tribe's life and customs. Due to the large amount of information contained in The North American Indian , this portion of The Curtis Collection website will have to be constantly updated in order to provide more detail. Therefore, this site will be in "continuous construction" starting with basic tribal information. More detailed information, photographs/gravure images, and special items will be added on a regular basis. Please continue to visit the site for information concerning the tribe(s) in which you have an interest. The decision to group certain tribes together in single description was made by the author, Curtis, based on his evaluation of the similarities of language and customs, and, in no way, reduces the importance of any one singular tribe. The selection(s) made for the quote(s) for each tribe is not meant to be definitive or compete, but informative, regarding not only the specific tribe, but of all tribes. The Curtis Collection takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the statements or quotes, made in The North American Indian , but merely reflects them for your information.

Easier - Native Americans, sometimes called American Indians, are descendants of the first people to live in the Americas. They had been living there for thousands of years before any Europeans arrived. Harder - When Columbus landed in what is now known as the West Indies, he incorrectly thought he had reached the Indies. He called the native people he met Indians. The Indians of the Americas spoke hundreds of different languages, had many varied ways of life, and each group had its own name. Some lived in large cities and others in small villages. Still others kept moving throughout the year, hunting animals and gathering wild plants.

    Native American Tips
    TIP 1
    FINDING NATIVE AMERICAN ANCESTORS
If you have Native American ancestors and you're trying to find out which tribe they came from, begin your search by the geographic area in which they lived. Once you've established the state and limited the area to five to ten counties, go to the American Indian Data Center to locate a map of Native American tribes.
    http://www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm

Once you know which tribes lived in the area, you may be able to locate the tribal headquarters for a particular tribe or several tribes. Look for maps showing the area at the time your ancestors lived there. Be aware that the tribal headquarters may now be far removed from where your family originally lived. Tribes were often relocated according to the government's whims or because of changes in state and county borders. Drought and famine also caused tribes to relocate. Research the time period by examining old newspapers and periodicals. Doing so will help you determine the circumstances and conditions under which your ancestors lived.
    TIP 2
    NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBAL NAMES
Recently, someone asked for information on the Chinook Native American tribe. A search of the Internet revealed little information. However, the word "chinook" is common in the northern Montana area and refers to the winds that tend to blow across the northern Plains area.
