2004 Year of the Monkey
Polynesians settled the Hawaiian islands around 700. Europeans found the place in the seventeen- and eighteen-hundreds, and starting around the mid-nineteen century, thousands of Asians, primarily from Japan and China, came to Hawaii. Each culture brought their homeland religions with them, and though a US state, Hawaii is where the proverbial "east" meets "west." Here, Chinese New Year's is just like January 1st, so if you're around town from the middle of January through early February, you're bound to be surprised that it's New Year's all over again.
Year of the Monkey
The Western calendar is based on the sun, while the Asian yearly cycle is based on the moon (lunar new year), which is why, while both New Year's fall close to each other, they are usually off by a few weeks. It's the same thing that causes Easters to wander each year as a "moveable feast." The Western year 2003 was the Year of the Goat, and started on Feb 1. The year of the Monkey starts 22 January 2004, and in the Asian calendar it's the year 4701.
New Year's in Hawaii
In Hawaii there are two New Year's every year. The Western one, on January 1st, and the Asian one about two or three weeks later. Each is celebrated in their own way and both are great times with fireworks, family celebrations, and public events all around the islands.

Prior to the concert, all concert patrons can enjoy lobby entertainment such as lion dancers, roaming magicians, fortune-tellers, arts and crafts booths such as lantern making, as well as a sampling of traditional New Year's treats. The festivities begin at 1:00 p.m. and are free to all ticket-holders. A special post-concert Imperial Reception is available by purchasing a special concert package. The reception will be held in the Green Room of the Veterans Building and features a dim sum buffet and entertainment by musicians with traditional Chinese instruments. Wong Chi Ming, an illustrious performer and teacher of Cantonese Opera, has been instrumental in the modernization of Cantonese Opera. Wong Chi-Ming was the star student of both the legendary male performer Ma Shi-Seng and leading female performer Hong Xian-Yu. While specializing in the scholar-warrior and clown roles, Mr. Wong is well known for his breadth of technical skill. After being named Chinese "National First Class Actor" in 1987, Wong Chi Ming began teaching in the United States, and now teaches at the San Francisco Chinese Culture Center, where students travel from afar to study with him.

by Nina Simonds 2002 [J394.26 S] by Shirin Yim Bridges 2002 [JP-B] Unlike the other little girls in old China who aspire to get married, Ruby aspires to attend university when she grows up, just like the boys in her family. Chinese New Year Walks Saturday, January 20, 27; February 3 by reservation only While the Chinese Culture Center offers regular docent- led tours of Chinatown, there is no better time to visit than around the Lunar New Year, when the festive atmosphere reflects the mood surrounding the most important holiday in Asia. As the new millenium dawns, we also enter into the Year of the Snake , and everyone will be celebrating until the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the first lunar month). Providing a revelational and intimate view of how the Chinese celebrate the new year, the walk will lead you through the bustling streets of Chinatown, while our docent details the myriad of customs, religious observances, and folk beliefes associated with Chinese New Year . Shops show off special window displays and decorations, and many stores put up Spring Couplets, which are short poems written on red paper, auguring good business for the coming year. All your senses will be tintillated by the celebrations: your eyes, nose, and mouth will be tempted by delicacies prepared especially for the occasion; and your ears will be bombarded by firecrackers exploding to drive away evil spirits. To take a walk, you must reserve ahead of time by calling (415) 986-1822. Fees are $20 per adult and $8 for children under 12.
