Chinese New Year Celebration
Saturday, January 24 1-3 pm
Celebrate the year of the Monkey! Usher in the New Year with Chinese New Year crafts, foods, music and dance. Children (and adults!) may even color their own Chinese New Year pictures or take home New Year messages written by a Chinese calligrapher.
Complementing the New Year celebration is an exhibit, Chinese Door Gods: A Changing New Year Tradition, featuring traditional and political Chinese New Year pictures from the Burke collections, on view for the first time. Working in collaboration with Suzzallo Library, the Burke will display pictures in two locations: at the Burke and the Suzzallo Library Gallery, from Jan. 14 to Feb. 22, 2004. At the Burke, see traditional pictures from Mianzhu County, Sichuan Province, where a centuries-old tradition of woodblock printing has been revived in recent decades. The Suzzallo Library exhibit will focus on New Year pictures in production. The original woodblocks used to print the pictures will be on view with a selection of New Year pictures from many parts of China. In addition, view a rare set of New Year prints made in 1949 to celebrate the first New Year after the Communist Revolution. The changing political scene is reflected in the changing images.
A series of lectures are planned to complement the exhibit and celebrations. Lectures will be held at the Burke Museum by Professors Madeleine Yue Dong of the University of Washington, Jan. 31; Li Yongxian of Sichuan University, Feb. 7; and Ellen Johnston Laing of the University of Michigan, Feb.14, 2004.

Chinese New Year
and General China Crafts
The Chinese calendar follows the moon and divides the years into groups of twelve. Each year is named for an animal. People born in that year are believed to share different traits. The first of the twelve years is the Year of the Rat. This is followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Because the Chinese calendar is based on the lunar year, the date of Chinese New Year changes each year. In 2004, the new year happens on January 22nd. On the Chinese calendar, 2004 is the Year of the Monkey. Click here for chinese language directions for a number of our crafts.
