    An Introduction Anne M. Birrell
$21.95 paperback 0-8018-6183-7 (24 ctn qty) 1999 344 pp. 10 illus. Add paperback to shopping cart "We must all thank Professor Birrell for providing an incredibly bountiful source, containing all manner of practical and fascinating information within its framework of myths. This book should find many uses and readers—it is a superb resource for teaching about Chinese myth, literature, history, religion, culture, and thought."—Suzanne Cahill, The Journal of Asian Studies In Chinese Mythology , Anne Birrell provides English translations of some 300 representative myth narratives selected from over 100 classical texts, many of which have never before been translated into any Western language. Organizing the narratives according to themes and motifs common to world mythology, Birrell addresses issues of source, dating, attribution, textural variants, multiforms, and context. Drawing on exhaustive work in comparative mythology, she surveys the development of Chinese myth studies, summarizes the contribution of Chinese and Japanese scholars to the study of Chinese myth since the 1920s, and examines special aspects of traditional approaches to Chinese myth. The result is an unprecedented guide to the study of Chinese myth for specialists and nonspecialists alike. "Goes far beyond anything in or out of print on this subject. Nothing remotely of this stimulating nature and high quality exists in English. It will be very much sought after by sinologists, but especially by non-sinologist comparativists. Birrell has singlehandedly saved the scholarly world at least a decade in its attempts to come to grips with this fragmented, refractory body of narratives . . . [A] marvelous work of humanistic scholarship."—Victor H. Mair, University of Pennsylvania

A good start for anyone interested in mythology who wishes to delve into the Chinese tales. The best there is on the subject in English!

Part V: Yaoi, Lies, and Religion The Beast God Gets Summoned
Let's regroup then. What's Villainy Guy #1 up to? *goes off to abandon the many dead. Not many Villainy Guys left* Bet you she's up to something. No da. We better find out what before the shit hits the fan. Whoa, whoa... Leave the cursing to me. You're the miko. The rules say you can't curse. I've been swearing in Japanese every other sentance! WE speak Chinese, so it doesn't count. I'll have to remmeber that. *staggers in, covered in lipstick* Did I miss much? We only have three seishi left, counting you, lover boy. Really? That sucks. Some help you were. Sorry. *sighs* Did you get any info from Villainy Guy #1? Heading west. Okay... let's go. *head out* *follows* *travel* How much longer? I'm not sure... *walks some more* : *unprovoked and subterfuged attack!* *stabity stabity stab* *fights back, and manages to escape* *sighs* Let's see... #3 killed one, I got two, and #6 got a fourth... that meant there are three left. Did any get killed in the battle?

Why I Hate Chinese Mythology, By Zelgadis Graywords
Part III: What's a Yu Watase Story Without a Near-Rape Scene?
*walks outside the cave* *follow* Now what? Oh, you were so wonderful! I stood there and got pummelled by magic in my underwear. What definition of wonderful was that? *comes by and steals the shinzaho* *starts chasing after it* *gets away, cackling* Kuso. Now what? We must come up with a cunning plan! Hmm... why do they want this thing again? So they can beat us, 'cause they're villainy and stuff you know. All in the rules. Then wouldn't they just destroy the thing? Not necessarily. Why not? That's what I'd do *look horrified* You're not supposed to say that! Why not? Because you're supposed to be cute and sweet and innocent and pretty and not capable of those thoughts! -_- Someone made a mistake in casting, didn't they? Don't look at us. Fine... what would you do about this then? Hmmm... Look for an opportunity! Okay... we'll need to find their camp for that. That's probably where they took the shinzaho *nod* The villain went that way... let's start searching.
