A Look at Chinese Mythology Introduction
The Eastern world is full of paradox, and, perhaps, the greatest paradox in China is that it has been so profoundly influenced by the world’s three most humane religions, Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism, yet remains under the inhumane rule of Communism. But by turning to China’s mythology we begin to realize how it is possible the nation has been governed by monarchs, emperors and dictators throughout its entire history. The closest thing we have to it in the West exists in our corporate world. The Chinese pantheon, which it seems is populated with gods as numerous as the stars, is run very much like a large corporation, with a President, Vice Presidents and a Chief Executive Officer at the top of the hierarchy. Beneath these, in authority, you find division heads who direct the staff members. Lower still, on the corporate totem pole, are secretaries who, I’ve learned, prefer to be called Administrative Assistants—except, for some reason, on Secretaries Day. In most corporations the executive offices are located on the top floor, signifying their “top dog” authority.

Chinese Mythology and Legends: Corpse under Confucianism China seems sometimes to used to be called "the Land without Mythology". But please try to think about there are few countries like Greece holding sophisticated and systemized Mythology, and the Greeks love their mythology to use for their literature and poetry, and drama without religious aim. Mythology is primally made from perspective of their natural circumstance, inevitably related to Religion and Respect. Politic and Centralization rouse unification of local mythologies. And oral tradition is succeeded in the process. I can say China keeps "primitive" polytheistic style mythology which monotheist culture and other countries which have taken apart Religion from Mythology like Tibet or Japan. Archaeology versus Mythology
China still remains many Darkspot for archaeology and we know Legend and Mythology hint objective facts
which lost during long oblivion and long time. We don't know whether the Kingdom of Xia (before ?Shang)
was real existence or not. We can read the context of many old scripts "polluted" by Confucian Doctrine, and

Chinese Mythology: An Introduction > Customer Review #1: Ian Myles Slater on A Unique Resource

Anyone without a knowledge of Chinese who has tried to find out much about the myths and legends of early China as opposed to the abundant material from medieval and later times has certainly encountered many obstacles. Mythical and heroic narratives from before the Han Dynasty are rare, often incomplete, and usually frustratingly allusive. They usually have survived in a form considered "rational" by generations of Confucian editors. There have been a few useful, but all-too-brief, presentations by qualified Sinologists, notably Derk Bodde. Other serious discussions by qualified Western scholars, however, often bog down in discussions of textual problems, the age and authority of sources, and other important issues, without ever explaining what a story is about.

By Anne Birrell
Chinese myths were primarily a diffuse and fragmentary oral tradition, eventually preserved in writing only in a piecemeal fashion. Many classical texts are unavailable in translation, and the stories have been unknown to Western readers. Anne Birrell here introduces the general reader to a selection of narratives organized by themes and motifs that help set Chinese myths in the context of world mythology. The contents include:
  • Origin and creation myths
  • Myths of the flood
  • The divine cosmos
  • Gender in myth
  • Metamorphoses
  • Mythic heroes and heroines
  • Fabled plants and animals
  • Major sources of myth
