Introduction
This site is to help people get access to different kinds of resources about Chinese history in the Internet. There are innumerable historical data and thousands of research results that we can never completely go through in our individual lives. If peo ple can share and exchange their efforts and experiences via the Internet, they can save large amount of time in fumbling alone, and learn a lot from others. Besides, it is advantageous to understand the truth from various points of view from people of o ther countries. Owing to the development and expansion of the Internet, these dreams do come true. We are getting more and more opportunity to study thoughts and minds of those who disperse all over the world. Some day, it'll be possible that we might not know each other but we understand each other. I spent a lot of time on searching this topic from every aspect; then went through those sites which I thought were promising; finally, culled these items and made some comments on them. Though they are only my personal opinions, I really hope my efforts would offer some directions to persons who are not my countrymen but are interested in Chinese culture. Almost all of the web sites I found are basically an introduction to part of the Chinese history or culture. Those who are doing academic research f or graduate study might find that the information got from these sites is far from what they expect; more on-line library search is recommended. As for ordinary people, they are very extensive and helpful.

    History of China
China, representing one of the earliest civilizations in the world, has a recorded history of about 3,600 years. It possesses rich historical documents as well as ancient relics. Like other nations, China, in its development, passed through the stages of primitive society, slave society, and feudal society. During the middle decades of the 19th century, capitalist forces of foreign countries invaded China, and China was slowly transformed into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The founding of the People's Republic in 1949 marked China's entry into the socialist stage. During the long period of historical development, the industrious, courageous, and intelligent Chinese people of all nationalities collectively created a great civilization. They made great contributions to all of mankind. The following is a list of the dynasties:

Chinese history: the four social classes
China was not an industrial society although there was industry there. This is an important factor in what determined the four social classes of China. The social classes were ranked by their importance to society. We will begin with the low end of the totem pole and work our way to the top. The lowest and poorest class was that of the merchants. These were people who conned people into buying goods they did not need. They were considered to be like parasites as they made their living off other people. It was believed that it took no skill to be a merchants so they had little value in society as they were easily replaces. bodyOffer(23613) The third class was the artisans. These are the people who crafted things with their hands. They are considered skilled which gives them more value than the merchants. Artisans often formed guilds and were respected for belonging to these organizations. Most artisans lived near cities. The second class was the farmers and peasants. Seven out of ten people belonged to this category. Peasants were considered to be the economic base of the country and were valued as such. This is not to say that they were not taken advantage of and charged high rents and exorbitant taxes. The farmers worked in family agricultural groups. Grains was the chief crop. Farmers owned land and land was highly valued as it was split between sons. The highest class of people were the scholars and officials. This group of people was given examinations to determine government positions. There were three levels of exams and they were for men only. They were district, provincial, and national. The exams were based of Master Kong’s texts. Passing the exams opened the door to the government, a highly respected place. This provided wealth, power, and prestige. Though one could move into this class it was often that it passed on down family lines and these men could afford the best education for their sons which resulted in better exam scores. No more than one out of ten people qualified to be in this class.

    Overview
Man in China passed from primitive society to slave society with the founding of the first dynasty, Xia and continuing through the following dynasties. The slave era was followed by the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, which started the transition to a feudal society. This period had thriving philosophy with representatives of various schools vying with each other in writing books to discuss politics and analyze society. Famous philosophers in this period included Lao Zi, Confucius, Mo Zi and Sun Zi. The first emperor was Shi Huang Di (Ying Zheng) of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), who standardized the script, currencies, weights and measures, and established a system of prefectures and counties. He constructed the Great Wall in addition to a large palace, mausoleum and regal lodges in several locations around China. The terra cotta armies (found underground) are known to be the eight wonder of the world. Back to Top...

The Development of Embroidery Throughout Chinese History
As one of the ancient handicrafts of China, embroidery has greatly contributed to the progress and enhancement of China's material civilization. Historical documents record the use of embroidery in China as early as 2255 B.C. Archaeological finds, however, place the beginnings of embroidery at some point during the Shang dynasty (1766 B.C. to 1122 B.C.). Originally used to signify one's caste position, embroidery later came to have a purely ornamental value and common people. As embroidery developed, its artistic features multiplied. Archaeological discoveries reveal that while embroidery remained crudely simple throughout the Chou dynasty, it became increasingly sophisticated during the Warring State Period (475-221 B.C.), and reached an aesthetic peak in the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-221 A.D.). The economic prosperity of the Han dynasty supported the rise of numerous cottage industries, one of which the silk weaving industry was crucial to embroidery. Furthermore, as the number of rich and privileged people increased, so did the demand for embroidery. With a strong supply of raw materials and robust market demand, embroidery flourished.
