Concise Political History of China Compiled from Compton's Living Encyclopedia on America Online (August 1995) 1. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTINUITY A significant aspect of China is its long cultural and national history. The Chinese people have shared a common culture longer than any other group on Earth. The Chinese writing system, for example, dates back almost 4,000 years. The imperial dynastic system of government, which continued for centuries, was established as early as 221 BC. Although specific dynasties were overturned, the dynastic system survived. China was even ruled at times by foreign invaders, such as the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty, from AD 1279 to 1368, and the Manchus during the Ch'ing Dynasty, from AD 1644 to 1911, but the foreigners were largely absorbed into the culture they governed. It is as if the Roman Empire had lasted from the time of the Caesars to the 20th century, and during that time had evolved a cultural system and written language shared by all the peoples of Europe. The dynastic system was overturned in 1911, and a weak republican form of government existed until 1949. In that year, after a long civil war, the People's Republic of China, with a Communist government, was proclaimed. This government and the ruling Communist party have controlled China ever since. Although the dynastic system has disappeared, the People's Republic occupies essentially the same territory and governs the same people. If anything, the culture and power of China seem stronger in the late 20th century than at almost any other period in history. Under the People's Republic, China's role in world economic and political affairs has grown increasingly more important.

Main Other Chinese Web Sites Chinese Cultural Studies:
A Brief Chinese Chronology The traditional way of dividing Chinese history is in terms of dynasties . The use of this system is so widespread that it is the usual way to refer to the Chinese past (people refer to "Tang poetry" or "Ming vases" for instance.) But this system of periodization presents several problems:- 1. Dynastic chronology seems to suggest that there were changes in Chinese life at times when change was not evident on a widespread basis; 2. Paradoxically dynastic chronology suggests a degree of continuity that was not present either. Thus common statements that the "fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911" represented the end of over 2000 years of imperial rule is severely misleading. Although at all times China had a socially stratified society and, compared to the rest of world, large state formations, the nature of these social stratifications and states underwent fundamental changes. Furthermore, within the time periods dominated by a particular dynasty quite dramatic changes took place. 3. Finally, the system, which stresses the history of the political elite, overlooks the importance of economic and agricultural life.

Educational Materials Selected Artifacts The Exhibition Imperial China was the first exhibition ever to explore the role of the horse in more than 3,000 years of Chinese history and culture. Far more than just an equestrian history, more than 350 artifacts not only illuminated the horse's significance in art, warfare, leisure activities and sport, but also showed how this interaction affected the overall culture Beginning with the Western Zhou Dynasty (1027-771 BC), and covering all subsequent dynasties through the Qing (1644-1911), the world exclusive exhibition contained many artifacts never before seen outside of China. All of the art and artifacts was selected from the collections of museums throughout Shaanxi Province , capital of China for more than a millennium, and home of the terra cotta army of China's first emperor. Exhibition Highlights:
  • Two Chariots from the Western Zhou and Western Han dynasties (206 BC-9 AD) that were restored specifically for Imperial China The bronze Han chariot is elaborately inlaid with original gold fittings.

The Horse in Chinese History
A Brief Overview
May through August of the Year 2000 Return to Education Main Page Brief Overview

Throughout China's long and storied past, no animal has impacted its history as greatly as the horse. From its domestication in northeastern China around 5000 years ago, the horse has been an integral figure in the creation and survival of the Middle Kingdom. Its significance was such that as early as the Shang dynasty (ca. 1600-1100 BC), horses and the vehicles they powered were entombed with their owners so as to be with them in the next life. During the Western Zhou dynasty (ca. 1100-771 BC), military might was measured by the number of war chariots available to a particular kingdom. As the empire grew, horses became essential for maintaining contact and control of the empire and for transporting goods and supplies throughout the vast and diverse country. Sun Ji, one of the leading authorities regarding the history of the horse in China, stated that there were three major periods of significant change in China's equine population. The first was during the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) when, under Emperor Wudi, the Chinese expended vast amounts in their efforts to import better horses from the West. The second occurred during the Tang dynasty (618-907) when horses were improved both by advances in domestic breeding practices and through the importation of Arab-type and Turkish horses. Finally, during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) there was an overall decline in horse quality with the deterioration of the remnants of the Tang breeding programs. Ironically, this decline occurred during the first imperial dynasty controlled by nomadic horsemen.
